I have a bamboo forest on my property and I love it. I’ve played in it since I was a child and I’m really wanting to start building things with it. I’m glad I found your channel
I don't live in the tropics...I live in southwest Virginia in the Appalachians and I grow 3 varieties of bamboo. Its been planted since 2015 and in the past two years has taken off. I really appreciate all of your videos. Bamboo is everything!!!!
I planted my Buddha Belly clumping bamboo when I first moved to Florida 10 years ago. Needless to say, it's now magnificent but it's only through watching your videos that I'm finally learning to manage and use it, instead of just letting it do its thing. My yard is rather lush and purposely overgrown because that's what the native birds and wildlife seem to like best. My bamboo is a huge part of that and I really want to expand the bamboo because I have zero privacy in the back yard and the bamboo really solves that problem. Thanks again for helping to educate me about bamboo.
My bamboo surives cold temperatures, here in Virginia. It's definitely being used, all around my land. I actually lable some of mine with the year it came up. Mainly when they are nice looking ones I want for future art or projects. Some I will just carve the year. "24". Best to keep, it simple. Hard enough to keep it under control! We have the invasive running type 🙄 so we look for every reason to use it. 😅 When preserved right and at the proper age, it's very strong.
Although it's a lot of work, start putting some kind of mark on your new culms as the appear. Do this every year and you then take the guess work out of the situation. I have clumps in different areas of the garden that have the same age of culm that look quite different. It's taken four years but now I've got an exact age for the ones that matter.
Great info. The entire Amazon forest needs this info. I don't know if you could get an automatic translation to Spanish and Portuguese but if you could I would love to see that simply because your channel is precios info to the Amazonian rainforest people like me.
Thank you. I have my sailboat up on the hard in Lombok Indinesia. I needed to make shade and scaffolding. You channel showed me how.. Kim Philley of Sailboat Philiosophy
You would probably have to mark them as new shoots comeup then, but if you look closely, you can see the age. New bamboo has sheaths, old bamboo will look older
Great job man keep it up Ty for your enthusiasm and question are you flying while you make these videos or maybe it’s me ! Anyways thanks again just propagated a shitload of timber boo time will tell Ty again

Hello, can you share your set up for curing/ drying your bamboo? I really need to come up with something before I harvest again. Had a bunch of it ruined from poor handling. 😟
I have a carport that I store the bamboo in to dry for 2 months. Nothing fancy. But after treating i stand them up to drain for a few days. You can check out my IG to see an image of that
Dude, if you wanna claim in 1 video that treated bamboo can last up to a 100 years then don't say "I think you can probably pull off 7 or 10 years out of it". Stay consistent pls! And keep up the (otherwise) good content! :P
Hey mate, I just cut a heap of bamboo it’s about 10 years old and the average height is 20 meters at least, but I can’t treat it for another couple of days, so it will be sitting for over 48 hours. I want to use it for arts and crafts so should I be worried that I’ve already stuffed the treating process?
First off, age of the culm matters. You want 4 yo culms from an at least 8 year old clump. Some of those culms you cut could be just a year old. Ideally you treat right away. Do you have borax and boric acid or access to saltwater? Do not leave it much longer than 48 hrs to effectively treat

I just did a consult at a place with a bamboo forest in their yard, I was jealous

Defintely, and there is so much you can do with bamboo. I wish I had running bamboo sometimes, I need more!!
Share it baby! Love seeing you and your work and learning from you!
Thanks for checking them all out
Guada bamboo (iron bamboo) is running and is widely considered the strongest bamboo so there's at least one exception.
Its actually running and clumping, a unique variety among bamboo

I learned that tip recently. Thank you.
Hebat! Bagus! We people from Malaysia simply ignore bamboo instead choose a plastic stuff for building
I was in kk two summers ago and was surprised how similar to Hawaii it felt. Both our countries need to rediscover bamboo

Mahalo. I would've thought people from the Amazon would no more than me. I know youtube has subtitles. I'll see if I can get them in other languages.

Cool. Glad my videos can help for things like that. I was in Lombok a few years back. Loved it
I have bamboo installed at my home. Which are more then 80 years old. Still solid as iron. India 🇮🇳
Bamboo is the best
Would the way to tell age differ in a dry climate(ie socal)? Trying to figure out how to gauge age if lichen and moss aren't there

So, what age would you recommend for shibari?
I don't know what shibari is, sorry
@HomesteadinHawaii rope bondage. So it needs to hold about 250-300 lbs
@@lannawolf1864 specifically you're looking for shear strength as it would be weighted w the bamboo horizontal

Can you just varnish the bamboo to treat it, or what I’m clueless!!! Need advice ASAP
Cheers Cam
Vanishing does not treat
What island are you on??
Hawaii island
About how many new shoots do you get per clump every year? And why did that shoot die?
I get about 5-10. Sometimes they die because of fertility. More you feed the more they grow
Do you have probemos with mold?
On the bamboo? Yes. It has to be cleaned from time to time
Mahalo!
No worries!
Did I miss the part where he said how to actually tell how to tell the age of bamboo ?
It’s in there
@@HomesteadinHawaii I think you did not talk about this part. That was the mean reason why I opened this video
Unscientific.
Yup. Just observational.
