    Hi there! Today we finally have another episode of The Paint Show!
    And this time I'm reviewing a paint I've been really waiting to review - Nickel Azo Yellow, by Daniel Smith.
    🎨 NICKEL AZO YELLOW 🎨
    I got this one in my recent US vacation, alongside Phthalo Blue and Alizarin Crimson.
    I first saw this paint in one of Steve Mitchel's (The Mind of Watercolor) videos, and wanted to try it out.
    I have too many more opaque yellows, and warmer yellows. This one's more on the neutral side, and so it's great for me.
    🎨 PAINT INFO 🎨
    - Pigment: PY150 (Nickel Azomethine Yellow)
    - Excellent Lightfastness (in fact - one of the most lightfast yellows out there)
    - Transparent
    - Low staining
    - Non-granutaling
    🎨 WHERE TO GET IT 🎨
    I was only able to find the 5ml tube online. The 15ml is REALLY PRICEY.
    You can get the 5ml tube on Amazon here (affiliate link):
    amzn.to/2N3yVIM
    If you live in the US and / or can get it locally - I'd recommend that.
    🎨 CONCLUSION 🎨
    I find this to be a very useful yellow to have. It's neutral, vibrant, transparent, lightfast. It's everything you can ask for from a yellow! (:
    I also briefly show a comparison with the Hansa Yellow Medium, which is another good yellow to have.
    Nickel Azo Yellow is superior in my opinion, as it has a larger range of values (can get darker than Hansa Yellow Medium). It's also transparent (unlike Hansa which is semi-transparent) so if you're looking for that - that's a good choice.
    In any case, I hope you enjoyed this episode of The Paint Show, and hope to do many more soon! (:
    Take care and we'll talk soon,
    - Liron

    My favourite Ni Azo Yellow mixture is with Indanthrone Blue, the most gorgeous greens I've ever seen. Also, mixing it with cool reds gives some really interesting oranges. Cheers~~

    Oh I love this color! It is kind of similar to Yellow Ochre when fully saturated, but then almost a cool lemony yellow when diluted! I'm choosing this color as my only yellow in my palette because it can mix both oranges and greens well. I just have to wait for my next birthday or holiday to get it, lol...

      Haha =P
      Well, it's worth the wait!
      I already did 5 paintings using it, and it's just perfect. It's the yellow I've been looking for all this time.
      Transparent, vibrant, glowing, slightly warm.

    I am surprised that I have so many yellows and how much I love them. I use Indian yellow and Gamboge and I think this Azo yellow is something like both... Maybe I should give it a try! It's great to see your colour reviews again. ^_^ More please!

      I'm a big fan of warm yellows (such as Indian, Gamboge and even Cadmium), and this one just nailed it for me.
      It made me realize that what was missing for me with some of the others is transparency.
      (though I still love them and will keep using them in the future)

    Just to note, there is another "azo" yellow, Benzimidazolone yellow PY151, that is a more primary yellow (it is a staple for my yellow). Thanks for showing this other azo yellow so I could compare it.

    I watch Mind of Watercolor as will and he always uses M Graham paints but he does use this color quite often. I always write down the colors he is using on any painting and I think he has every color, brush, paper, gouache, ink, and pen known in the civilized world. I can only dream. This color reminds me a little of Indian Yellow

      How does the QoR Benzi compare to this one? Are there any major differences? (:

    • @StephenMarkTurner
      @StephenMarkTurner 5 лет назад

      I've never had DS versions of those colours. I would describe the 129 and 150 as being 'textured', ie can get a pronounced colour change when the paint is thick and thin in the same area of the painting. The Benzi 154 on the other hand is very smooth and even bright 'yellow' yellow (no orange or green), a bit opaque, doesn't change colour much when thinned. I could mix a good 150 with 129 and Benzi Orange 62.

  • @SMazu-cl4uu

    I m really chocked here because DS has a low stainning yellow azo while W&N has strong stainning properties. It seems to be a difference bewteen "Nickel" Azo Yellow and Azo Yellow..

      @@LironYan I apologize I didn't see this until now. As for the differences it's hard for me to tell, I'm still new to watercolors, but the Qor NAY looks almost greenish out of the tube to my eyes. I heard Lindsay Weirich describe it, saying that in light washes it looks more like a cool yellow...but with more pigment it's a warmer yellow, not sure if that is just for Qors or for all NAY. I gotta say she looks to be right! I was thinking to remove the cool yellow from my palette (cad yellow primrose by Qor, it's really opaque.) and only having this one, but being new to this medium I figured I better wait on that decision lol. Thank you for all you do, I'm learning quite a bit from you. Have a great day!😊👍

      @LironYan  5 лет назад

      Haha - that's very interesting. A very unique color for both brands.

      And thank you so much - really happy I can help!

    • @Roslyngal
      @Roslyngal 5 лет назад +1

      My QOR azo yellow has two main differences. It has a browner masstone (almost a bit granulated too) and it flows in that crazy ‘tentacle’ way that QOR tends to do. This means you don’t get as clear/smooth a wash as you do with the Daniel smith version. Daniel Smith is the better one for glowing sunlit underpainting, especially behind foliage in landscapes/nature studies. Then use it with your blues for harmonious greens in the mid/foreground.

    Great episode Liron At first when I saw the label colour I was expecting something like Naples yellow but Its more like a Quin gold. In some respects it is similar to some of my yellow ochre or raw sienna's but with such an amazing colour depth. I am looking for something like that to add to my Autumn landscape colours now we're reaching that time of year. I have been looking at Quin gold and Green Gold, I normally mix these hues but looking for something with a bit more glow and vibrancy as my mixes can be a little dull and flat. Any ideas Liron?

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  5 лет назад

      Hmmm, I would actually go with this one for the purposes you mentioned (:
      It's more vibrant than Hansas and glows more than Ochres.
      It also mixes very nice greens and oranges that could totally work for autumn landscapes.
      I would try mixing it with a cool blue for more vibrant results, especially if you say your mixes are dull.
      That and a cool red will work wonders. I really find this one miraculous haha.

    Hello Liron, I've been following your very useful videos since the pandemic began, when I started to paint with watercolors. I am building a color palette, and now I saw this demo i was wondering if you could replace Indian Yellow and Hansa Yellow Deep with Nickel Azo Yellow. I have Sennelier's Indian Yellow (PY154, PY153), but sometimes doesn't look punchy enough, so i'm considering a change to the DS options, but the Hansa is semitransparent and this one is not (acording to DS chart), which is still confusing for me. I would really apreciate your insight in this matter. Thank you!!

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  5 лет назад +3

      I think Nickel Azo Yellow is just a little more yellow (:
      It's still quite warm, and has more of an orange feel to it - compared to Lemon Yellow for example.
      But when compared to Quin. Gold (which seems to be infinitely popular haha), it's less orange and more yellow.
      It can be a little confusing because it (Nickel) also glows a lot, and is very vibrant, and transparent.

    I'm not a fan of this paint. I find it to look too much like yellow ocher, which I hate, and I found it to be muddy looking. If you can put it down in one layer and leave it...then it's okay but turns muddy with layering.

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  Год назад +1

      Yeah it has a few drawbacks.
      It's main advantage is producing a DARK yellow very fast.
      But it will sometimes need to be neutralized to make more sense in the darks, OR use very cleanly like you say - for the darks.
