I think what it means is to stay away from partisan politics. But when it comes to being aware about policy issues, one needs to be informed citizen.

But most of what's in the news is partisan politics. Most discussions and editorials and think pieces about policy turn out to be more about partisan politics than policy. It is important to be aware of policy, but you have to look hard, in non-standard places for it (like policy papers, policy publications, newsletters and substacks-not mainstream media)
clickbaity title, what you meant was that strong belief system ingrained by politics makes people forego logic. doest make you "dumber" , makes your decision worse
Exactly. I don't think people who are smart are dumb. It is just that their ideology is more important than a few graphs and tables. They might not even trust that data completely. They might think there are missing gaps in the story.
Hmm... Is there a difference between a smart person who does dumb things and a dumb person who does dumb things?

IMHO, the premise of the survey was incorrect. So, the success rate of medicine group was around 74% and that of the placebo group is 83%. Therefore, the medicine didn’t work. While this sounds okay, I would question why the no. of patients in both the groups were not the same? Are clinical trials conducted like this?
Whatever be the answer, one thing is clear - those who don’t know that the process to measure the results will always get it randomly right or wrong. Not knowing that randomized control trials are to be interpreted in that way doesn’t really say much about your math skills.
Additionally, political awareness is necessary. I hope young people don’t read it and incorrectly conclude that they are better off without any involvement in politics. That’s a recipe for disaster for the nation.
But honestly this is a tall claim to make with such an experiment. One needs to also understand that you need to formulate the experiment right and not just make such quick conclusions out of such simple experiments that might not even tell us anything about the question of our interest

The percentages are important here because the sample population in both arms of the trial is different.
In the arm where people DID use the skin cream, the total sample was 223+75=298 people, of which 223 got better - that's 74.83%
In the arm where people DID NOT use skin cream, the total sample was 107+21=128 people, of which 107 got better - that's 83.59%
So, rashes got better at a better rate in people who DID NOT use the skin cream! :)

Good episode, but the conclusions you draw from the study are completely wrong. The study shows only that when you are emotionally invested in a topic, your ability to objectively analyze data *on that topic* becomes weak. Knowing a lot about politics will not "make you dumb" in general. You will be able to analyze all kinds of other data and facts just fine, and you don't lose your intelligence. It just means that if you have strong views on politics, you will not be objective on politics. But you can be objective and intelligent with respect other topics.
A second problem with your conclusion is signaling out of politics as something uniquely bad. It is not about politics per se, but anything to which you are emotionally attached. It could be religion, or cricket, or any number of other things. There is nothing wrong with following politics or having opinions. We should just keep in mind that on those topics, we will not be objective and we should doubt our own analyses on those things.
Well getting advice from a scientist about politics is the dumbest thing ive heard even though I believe politics is a scam
The advice is not about politics: it is about listening to news about politics.
