It's funny the things you remember....... I was a student at Northern Illinois University in 1982 and my family lived in a Chicago suburb and had just gotten cable TV. One of the new channels was WOR out of New York and they were televising this game. It was on a Sunday night and I came home for the weekend (I never did that) and watched the game. I drove back to DeKalb the next (Monday) morning.
Those of us who got to see Tony O play remember how his skill's gave the Blackhawks a chance to be in every game. This clip best exemplifies his acrobatic and humble efforts game in and game out.
John, I miss Chicago Stadium too. Grew up in STL and love my Blues and the STL Arena. Moved to Chicago in late ‘80’s and got 1/2 share of season tix at The Stadium. Just an outstanding place to watch hockey - I loved it as much as a native Chicagoan. The Hawks were always my 2nd favorite team. The first hockey game I ever went to was the STL Braves, a Blackhawks farm club, in 1965. They wore the same jerseys as the Blackhawks, except the patch on the shoulder had the intertwined STL and the two tomahawks. BTW, your namesake, John Kelly is a real good broadcaster!! And the Hawks are getting Darren Pang back on their broadcast team.
@@puck30 Driving on a winter night in the Midwest, getting WMAQ or WBBM on your AM radio, all you needed was a couple notes from that organ to immediately know you were listening to a broadcast from the Great Chicago Stadium.
I was at this game, and i can tell you that the building had a buzz in it before the game, during the game, and after the game! Absolutely electric! The Hawks had gotten off to a good start that year but this was the first real test, playing the Champs in our house. It was standing room only and the fans never let up. *interesting note; i know for a fact this was the game i got a speeding ticket buzzing down Ashland ave. north from I 55 to get there in time! My buddy Dave was with me and he kept telling me to slow down, but i was to excited to listen! (one last thing, at 12:46 i think Tony O was going for the empty netter!) What game he had that night....
Amen Steve, I wasn't with you & Dave that night but when they had standing room only crowds at the Old Stadium it was like a religious experience. The building shook. The Blackhawks really got "up" for those games against the Islanders & Canadians, Bruins, Flyers. Very Exciting. People forget how good Esposito was....
Great fore-checking and back -checking by Peter Marsh . I love that Tessier put Wilson/Murray out for the last shift of the game. Beautiful goal by Troy Murray. Huge victory for the Blackhawks against one of the Best hockey teams ever.
Peter Marsh was a gamer man, he had speed and could really work. I think one of Al's goals was just him busting down the left side and letting loose a rocket that really set the Stadium on fire.
@@skifusya2814 He lit it up pretty good in the WHA. He just seemed like a really good team mate, I think he and Bob Murray were tight. I remember Borje Salming broke Bob Murray's leg & Marsh was really upset ( If my memory is correct).
@@wizardglick1 Well, yes, the WHA... Oh, I'm not questioning that he was a solid teammate. But my recollection of him as a Hawk is that he needed a lot of chances to score a few goals - fortunately, he was able to contribute in other ways during his time with the club, though.
1:03 holy moly. The magic of Bossy. Espo did make some nice saves on him in the 1st though. He could've easily had 3. The roar on the Murray goal was something special

I remember the sirens and lights...no stupid boat horn at that time!!

DAMN I miss that building! TONY TONY TONY!!

The old pipe organ!

I really liked Marsh's work ethic and enthusiasm, too. Too bad he had no scoring touch, though.

@@skifusya2814 True, I will never confuse him with Mike Bossy. I always liked Marsh and Glen Sharply. Eye injury broke my heart
A great win for a young Hawks team!

Jiggs and Eddie!❤ Even the announcers were better back then.
This was a year before me...👶🏻
