When we play street hockey, back in the 70's,when it was my turn to go in the net,i always tried to copy Tony O. ,he was spectacular! Thanks for the memories!
I was 13 when the Summit Series happened, so glad I was able to see that. Young folks today don't know what they missed. They showed the final at our school, couldn't believe it! Watch a hockey game in school? I thank whomever made that prescient decision! When Henderson scored we all jumped out of our desks, I'll never forget it. And yes Henderson should be in the HOF. And apparently, Tony O should have played more of the games!
Again my condolences to the. Esposito family in regards to. Tony....talking about the older brother topic I was the younger and was always fascinated with the goalie position.... Plante. Giacomin. Worsley. Bower. Cheevers. Esposito and many more. ...later. Parent. Brodeur ...Wow
There was a famous 0-0 game he played for Montreal against Boston which Dick Irvin used to talk about. It's too bad there doesn't seem to be any surviving video clips of this game. RIP Tony O.
@@ericw3229 Sad that no video seems to have survived. Would have been amazing to watch. The playoff series between them that year also seems lost to history. By all accounts it was quite a battle.
Like Eddie Belfor, he hated losing!! I once attended a Phil and Tony Espisito Hockey School in the Sault. Players from across Canada, the U.S. and even Sweden attended back in 1974 or 75, I think. Phil wasn't there but Tony was and i remember he donned the pads one session and I beat him everytime cause I used to watch his style on TV and always saw that he had that 5 hole stance, which always said...shoot here...he got really upset with me for not sticking around for the last game and was relentless trying to convince me to stay, but I couldn't . At that age I was intimidated and kind of bugged by it but later looking back, I took it as an honour that he cared so much and would try so hard since other coaches could careless...great guy and great goalie! Thanks Don for posting this Memorial!
I still have "Twenty-seven Days in September" about the '72 series. All the stats, great photos and recaps. Yep, Tony was the best in the tournament. It would have been great to see the results of him playing the rest after Dryden got blown out.
I agree that Tony may have been the hotter of the two goalies but that was at the beginning of the series when he won game 2 in Toronto. However, he did let in three goals in four minutes in game 5 and then Dryden was stellar in game 6 and made a spectacular save in game 8 to save the game for Henderson's game-winner. I believe Sinden pulled the right buttons with rotating goalies.
Phil said that in game 3 of the Summit series in the 2nd period when the Russians were really pouring it on that he had never witnessed such sustained amazing goaltending by Tony.
I just watched it. Tony played well but it's Tretiak who really stood out, especially in the 3rd period when he made 2 miraculous saves. One of them was against Henderson who lifted his stick thinking he had scored the go ahead goal.
RIP ESPO. Why isn't PAUL HENDERSON in the HOF? He scored the winning goals in the final three games of the first Canada-Russia series, saving the reputation and honor of the NHL?
@@primroselane1 so has alot of people...lots have never played in the NHL....BUT I think Henderson should... But his NHL was weak....he was good but no super star...
Just a slight misconception that is going around. Tony Esposito was not the first butterfly goalie in the NHL. Glenn Hall invented that style of playing net before him.
@@TRKEWEENAW Great coach. I was in Houghton in 1967 as the student manager of the Minnesota Gopher hockey team. The Huskies just toyed with the Gophers. Espo was a stone wall.

Tony 0's name is on the Stanley Cup. He won it with the Habs before going to the Hawks. He played only 12 or 13 games in the regular season and none in the playoffs. As a kid, he was my idol and the reason I'm a Hawks fan in Toronto.
7-3. Easy to find out. Pete Mahovlich scored a shorthanded goal in game two. Beautiful goal but he didn't ''go through the whole team.'' 4-1. I had a series booklet from a local car dealer and can still see the color pic of Mahovlich scoring that goal.

Won a Cup with Montreal..otherwise in Chicago against Montréal in 71 and 73...he couldn't make the great save to win for his team..especially in the 71 final when Lemaire scored on a slapshot from centre ice in game 7...horrible goal..also the last hurrah for Ward Cornell on HNIC as the intermission host..

As a young goalie in the 70s Tony was my hero. One of the most fun goalies to watch ever.

Rest in peace Tony. God bless.

My Idol, The Late Great Tony O Esposito Of The Chicago Black Hawks
Early 80's Oilers skating rings around blackhawks in those highlights.
It's from games 1 and 3 of the 1983 Campbell Conference Finals, plus 11/13/83. Oilers were unreal then.
Tony O is a legend and boyhood hero. Has Phil made any public comments about Tony's passing?
