- Of course he wasn't the absolute least interesting man in the world, but when compared with those artists who died young, or were never appreciated, or continually struggled with their inner demons, Franz Joseph Haydn certainly didn't have a lot of drama going on in his life. So come enjoy some music history you might have missed and learn about the man who dominated the classical period.

I don't know how you can say this knowing that he was a key figure in the development of the new Classical style and he established and greatly developed new forms such as the symphony, the string quartet and the sonata form structure. He was innovative as an artist.

This guy or people making this video are just envious, as nobody would make even a video describing their lives as uninteresting, simply put even laughing at their boring lives wouldn't be interesting... so we rag on someone who actually had an interesting life instead. And pretend their life was uninteresting.
Which I find interesting, they never mention his skull, which was rather weird ie. interesting story behind it. Not finding rest until the 1950's.

I mean technically, if we say the most uninteresting person is the most uninteresting, he is therefore more interesting than the second most uninteresting. Therefore, we can deduce that if the least interesting and the second least are even more interesting than the third, than that means if we continued this trend we get that what we call the 'most interesting' person would get the reward for the 'least interesting'

As an austrian I can say...that is such an austrian thing to do. He probably had the window open and played extra loud just so that napoleon would get the message.
And in a turn of events a guy from Braunschweig took the melody of the austrian anthem and wrote a text in which he demanded that all german states should form one union.
But Bismarck thought like every real democrate: "Fuck the southern states!" But after realising that the big wall called the Alpes only devided austria he decided: "Ok every state south of the home of the headless can stay german".

Ahhh, I love Haydn! Another fun fact for you: Did you know he sorta has two heads? Someone stole his skull from his grave so they put a fake one in, but later, they recovered the head and put it back, but they never bothered to take the fake one out.

Make no mistake, I love Haydn. If anything I think he's a much healthier example of what a successful artist should look like. It's just that his life and career don't capture the imagination the way Mozart or Beethoven do.

He played the kaiserhymne in the aftermath of Napoleon's conquest, and died shortly later. What an absolute legend!
I cannot express in words the admiration I have for Haydn. A great composer, indeed, and in my view not appreciated enough even by classical music lovers anywhere as nearly as he should be. But nonetheless, his art will live on. A true master of the musical craft.
His cello concerti alone are some of the most sublime highlights of human history
AND an absolutely EPIC boss to his orchestra. From writing symphonies that feature lots of solos just to allow his soloists to show off in front of the Prince (no. 6., Morning) to writing a whole symphony (no. 45., Farewell) as a way of asking for them to get PTO to see their families, this guy was probably one of the nicest bosses in history.

He lived a stable, long and happy life in the 1700s. He’s lowkey the most interesting man in the world
He also made an symphony were all the orchestra plays slowly went home one after an other, because they were all totally pissed that the season went so long and they couldn't see there families.
Also some say his ghost is still haunting his house.

Another tangential but somewhat interesting connection to another famous composer: he was on friendly terms with Franz Liszt's father, though he didn't live long enough to meet the son.
I love that he took the most rational choice and not bring children into a marriage obviously devoid of genuine love.
I wish more people would take that route.

Great Video, i miss one thing to be mentioned: that his hymn for the austrian emperor was the official anthem of Austria and later Austria Hungary, and with a different text is the current national anthem of germany.

I honestly think that Haydn doesn't get enough credit as a predecessor to Beethoven as he deserves. Beethoven is often described as a singular genius, whose musical innovations were completely unprecedented and way ahead of his time. Not to diminish the legacy of my favorite composer, but both Haydn and Mozart were going in Beethoven-esque directions towards the end of their lives, and Beethoven's early pieces were clearly inspired by them. Haydn's "Creation" oratorio is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, starting from the first movement, which is an overture meant to represent the universe *before it was created.*

How can you tell this story without the extremely weird post-mortem chapter? One of his friends was obsessed with phrenology, and secretly dug up Haydn's corpse and cut off and stole his head so he could study his skull bumps for signs of his musical genius. It only got worse from there. Head and body weren't reunited until the 1950's. There's a really good video about the saga from Ask a Mortician.
As a musician, I had to learn classical to train. Hadyn's compositions were certainly elegant and enjoyable to play as well as to hear. As my favorite composer of all time is Beethoven; and yes, he was a tortured soul, for Beethoven to participate in the gesture of carrying Hadyn to conduct his concert really means alot.

@@Yetaxa I dont think Mozart and Beethoven are more famous because of their tragic lifes. Or not directly. Mozart and Beethoven composed pieces for eternity. I think its the suffering and desperation that somehows finds its way into the music, maybe as the only safe haven. I think such personality can produce way "better" things than your good old 0815 aristocrat living his chill live

Haydn was a fundamentally happy man (certainly not as miserable as a man like poor Beethoven), but his life was no cakewalk.
He was born in poverty and when taken under Frankl was frequently hungry and embarrassed by his filthy clothes. He had a failed marriage (which you touched on). He was riddled by illnesses throughout his life (such as smallpox which gave him horrible scars on his face), and frequently felt lonely and isolated despite his extreme success

While Haydn's life wasn't the most tumultuous, he certainly had some postmortem adventures. At least... his skull did.
So, when Haydn died, he was supposed to get a grand burial. But Vienna was in the midst of war, (as this video already stated) so Haydn was hastily buried in a small grave outside of Vienna.
A scientist named Franz Joseph Gall thought that an individual's intellectual features were indicated by the shape of one's skull. A couple of his followers, Joseph Rosenbaum and Johann Peter decided it would be an excellent idea to extract Haydn's skull for study. So they did just that. Rosenbaum kept Haydn's skull "on a cushion covered with while silk and draped with black satin inside a black wooden cabinet that was modeled after a Roman sarcophagus and decorated with a golden lyre". He did extensive studies on the decapitated head of the composer and allegedly found the "seal of hearing" according to Gall. Truly a fine example of early 17th century medicine.
Years later, Prince Esterhazy of Vienna decides to give Haydn his proper burial. But of course, upon opening the casket, they found his head missing. The authorities quickly found Rosenbaum and the prince paid to get the composer's head back. Here's the thing though... Rosenbaum gave this poor fuckin prince the wrong head. Haydn's body was laid to rest with the wrong head for 134 years!!!! It literally took until 1954 for this damn corpse to get his head back.

He was possibly the first composer of worldwide fame (from Spain to Russia, and even America). He influenced and was admired by fellow composers (including such big names as Mozart, Beethoven, Salieri...), celebrated by emperors, kings and aristocrats, and also by the general public; a public who fully appreciated his genius and his works. Almost no other composer can boast the same.
Somewhere I read this, and I do think it says something valuable: Beethoven and his genius refused to bow before nobles and kings; yet, kings and nobles bowed before Haydn.

And when the police went to his house looking for Haydn's skull, he hid it under his wife. She was laying in bed, on her period, the police wouldn't dare looking under the sheets._

Nowadays we refer to "The Curse of the Ninth" in reference to nobody after Beethoven being able to write more than eight symphonies. But Beethoven himself only did nine because he was so intimidated by the sheer number and quality of Haydn's symphonies.
I think he started a tenth, but died before he got very far. Later, Brahms was so intimidated by the greatness of Beethoven's symphonies that he only managed to eke out four!
