    At 20db gain reduction this thing still sounds so uncompressed, absolutely kills the plugins emulations!

      Aviv Cohen Thanks for understanding that!! Most people don't realise!!

    • @Madrrrrrrrrrrr
      @Madrrrrrrrrrrr 7 лет назад +3

      The uad still sounds uncompressed at 20 db reduction. But the magic is in really phatening up the attack! It will cut better trough a mix! Only the real thing can do that. Btw I thought the vocals where rather ok. Kick was a bit flat. Also on snare it has the real signature 1176 sound. And on a drumbus mixed with original sound. Anything with a phat attack sound comes out great!

    • @persianchris2451
      @persianchris2451 7 лет назад +1

      By phat attack, you're not referring to fast/slow settings on the 1176 are you? Or are you just saying it makes the transient sound fatter on the downbeat etc?

    i've been too shy with driving 1176 plugins on vocals! love the sound on the vocal once the input is cranked a bit. almost always used 4:1, but haven't pushed the gain reduction so far.

      I always track kick, snare and vocals through 1176 racked units. I highly recommend it. Just take a little time with getting it set just right and go pretty light. It really can affect the tone of the kick and especially snare "smack," thickness and decay.

    An immediately apparent feature of high quality analog compressors is their transparency even at not-so-subtle settings.....

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  8 лет назад +2

      +Andrea Tomassini Whilst transparency can certainly be a very desirable quality in a compressor, there is definitely a place for more coloured compressors, especially in the mixing stage :)

    • @andreatomassini202
      @andreatomassini202 8 лет назад +1

      Doctor Mix I absolutely agree, I was too vague, I meant that the action of the compressor, even if noticeable and/or inducing eq/harmonics coloration still maintains a perceived dynamic feeling and does not kill the transients giving you the advantages of compression without sacrificing too much the perceived dynamics

    Hello, I got a question here. I just bought dbx160x (someone sell it to me really cheap). I mainly work on VO and Vocal, some of my friend said this compressor is good on snare but not for Voice. • @michaelbauers8800
      @michaelbauers8800 7 лет назад +4

      Auto tune, ruining music for over 10 years and counting. Never met a pop song with auto tune I could stand because I can hear it, apparently most of the time, because I can hear it on most modern pop songs, and 20 years ago or so I never heard that finger nails on chalkboard effect of the algorithm fixing the pitch. I am surprised everyone can't hear the artifacts it generates.

    • @i.AmHymn
      @i.AmHymn 7 лет назад +1

      Michael Bauers ANY tool can be abused/undesirable. However, it's when they are used and go undetected that they fulfill their purpose (IF such is the overall goal). Such was the case for pitch-correction pretty much up until Cher's "Do You Believe In Love" pop song; when Auto-Tune was over emphasized and used as an obvious effect.
      I, personally, am ol' school and prefer the vocalist sing the song correctly... but choose Melodyne over AT for either discrete or creative pitching (if need be).

    Wow. I'm not even using good monitors and there is already a lot of diference. I'm not much into hardware compressors, there is anything that comes close to it? :)

    • @Houstnwehavuhoh
      @Houstnwehavuhoh 9 лет назад

      +Paulo Vitor G. Ribas UAD 1176 is the closest Ive come to the hardware unit. I own an 1176LN reissue (little cleaner than this version) and the UAD one is not bad for what it is.. The Waves one isn't bad, but it is a lot different, attack and release aren't that close.

    • @PauloVitorGRibas
      @PauloVitorGRibas 9 лет назад +1

      +HoustnWeHavUhoh p thanks, it seems that I'll need to get the hardware then :)

    • @Houstnwehavuhoh
      @Houstnwehavuhoh 9 лет назад +1

      The hardware unit is great! But it's expensive. So only if you deem it worth it! When I said the plugin versions weren't as close to the hardware unit, I didn't mean in any way that they were bad. They were just different. Still quality plugins for sure, and similar enough to give the impression you've got that 1176 "vibe". I used them for a long time and still use them today, both the Waves and UAD. Granted, I love my real one and will always use that when possible, but when dialing in a mix and only having one, I have to print the compression before I switch to different instruments. Just wanted to give that bit of insight! If you can afford it, by all means you will not be disappoint. If it's not ideal, you can still get a similar vibe with the Waves and UAD versions! **side note: by no means what so ever am I saying you can not afford it fyi (some people get offended). When I started mixing I LOVED the 1176 but couldn't afford it and got discouraged by the minutia of hardware/analog gear. The most I'm saying is it is a commitment, as they're about 2k for a new reissue, maybe more for a vintage one (calibrated and everything), and you can still get similar tones/vibes in the box!**

    • @PauloVitorGRibas
      @PauloVitorGRibas 9 лет назад

      +HoustnWeHavUhoh p Don't worry about the "being able to afford" part, it's fine. I probably won't be able to for now haha. But I use Windows and UAD isn't a option, I'll certainly give a check on the waves plugin. I liked waves plugin before, so it should be a good choice for now. ^^

    • @Houstnwehavuhoh
      @Houstnwehavuhoh 9 лет назад +1

      Yea some people just get offended or take it the wrong way! When the reality is you can make great records and get cool analog vibes ITB! But definitely check out the Waves stuff. It's still great. Their SSL bus comp is by far my favorite. Their multi band compressor is also fantastic (LinMB).

    This company made some tape decks and microphones back in the day. Somewhere near Revox in quality. Definitely not slouchy! It sounded a bit overdriven and had dropouts and this could be a RUclips thing, but my headphones do not forgive! It is a hard world. No prisoners or mercy in audio. It is either hack it or pack it!

    Are you compensate levels after compression? I don't like it on kick, some of the low end is missing, Great on Vocals and bass.

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  7 лет назад

      We are not compensating for the level, as we tend to use it in parallel. Therefore it is better to have a healthy level bounced back into the DAW, so you can blend in as much as you need :)
      That also helps with the loss of low end, as the low end is covered by the dry signal, whilst the punch is added by the 1176 channel.

    is this a silverface? the previous revisions are known to sound even better than that but this is already great! I recently got a Hairball 1176 BlueStripe replica and I love it to death, same charachter, the trafos and gain reduction do something to lows and highs that contains and focus the sound the more you push it, never been able to achieve this with plugins but it solves so many headaches in mix! Not suggested for clean and deep subs tho..
    And for the hardwareVSplugin guys... it's possible to make good mixes with plugins, especially with modern genres but if you feel stuck for years and don't know what else to do to improve your sound maybe you improved you hearing enough to appreciate hardware, and i will get you that 5% (this is really subjective, to me it's now almost everything!) you missed.
