Matt, thank you so much for sharing this tribute. Kander and Ebb brought an earthy sensuality to Broadway musicals along with brilliant unforgettable songs. They are richly deserving of the Kennedy Center Honors. Love seeing Liza return to the stage. She was the perfect Kander and Ebb interpreter. And she is still an electric performer here!
I was in my early 20’s doing Woman Of The Year and in rehearsal John & Fred called me over to the piano and started playing a song they wrote and said, “Greg, what do you think about this?” At the time I had no clue how big these 2 were (I was young and dumb) and how casually they just pulled me aside to ask my opinion on a musical song or line they wrote. I don’t remember what I said to them but I’m kind of glad I didn’t know because I might have acted like an idiot.
I feel sorry for all of the people they brought out that ended up behind the dancers for the finale. They didn’t think through their staging of where everyone would be.
