2 Years later, having the R6II, which seems to be a near vertical upgrade to the original, if there was any doubt before, I think the higher end R series straight up outperform DSLR's in their capabilities. I do think for rugged environments and sideline sports work, having a tank of a body like the 1DX is still invaluable, but for general use, the R6, not to mention the R5 or R3 are just going to take the lead.
FWIW I've gotten very acceptable landscape images with my R6. The superior shadow recovery largely makes up for the fewer MP compared to my 5D Mark IV. Unless printing big AND pixel peeping, it's hard to tell the difference. I was very pleasantly surprised!
I just bought my 3th RF glass, and that is 70-200. I will test all this as I have seen on your video... I came to late home, didn't have much opportunity to test :)
I've been a professional sports photographer for over 15yrs. I've had this lens for just over a month now and I'm NOT enjoying it one little bit. I shoot mostly fast moving action sports, typically cyclist moving very fast towards me. The zoom throw is horrible, and the lens mount gets in the way. Its hard work to use under these circumstances. With the EF version I can rest the mount in the palm of my hand and zoom very quickly with just two fingers and get the full range of the zoom. The RF version needs two twists of the wrist to get the same zoom range. Many shots have been missed because of this. I also haven't noticed any difference in image quality between the EF version with an adaptor vs the RF version. Its probably a great wildlife and stills lens but has missed the boat with pro sports photographers.
I do wildlife and sports, so I'm going with the R5. I can shoot sports in CRaw and wildlife in either, so that makes the R5 the best of both worlds for my needs. I've been waiting to see what the R5/R6 can do in the sports world and I see they can handle their own. Sure glad I did not get suckered into the 1DX3.
Ice skating may not be the most demanding of sports since the movements are quite smooth. Would be interesting to test the camera with basketball or soccer.
I really appreciate the time and thought you put in to your videos and would really appreciate your opinion on a question I have. I’m using a R6 and trying to decide on the RF 70-200 F4 or F2.8 version. This is for personal use of family photos. I have a 2 year old who will be starting some inside activities soon like gymnastics and skating. I wanted to know your opinion on how you think the F4 version would hold up in an inside environment of a recreation center or gymnastics type environment. I understand that higher shutter speeds are necessary for sports BUT he’s still 2 years old so can’t move THAT fast lol. Also outdoor winter sports will be soon and toddler soccer next summer so I think the F4 will be ok in that type of environment but I’ll have less subject separation vs. the F2.8 version. I’m wondering how much of a difference in subject separation there would there be when someone is like 30+ feet away from a F4 vs F2.8? Thanks for any help anyone can provide! I don’t own and haven’t had any experience with longer focal lengths so it’s hard for me to understand what would be a decent for sports and activities. From what I see in your video and reviewing your settings you shot all your photos at F2.8 so I was trying to breakdown the ISO and shutter speed to make up 1 Stop of light if I were to go with the F4 version BUT you are probably in a much better lit arena vs a typical arena type setting. Sorry I know this is long but thanks if you’ve made it this far in my comment and have an opinion to share.
Hey there. I frequently shoot sports and on fields with the subject 20-30+ yards aways and there is a noticeable but not drastic difference in separation / bokeh between 2.8/ 4. If you are 30 feet, you probably won't be zooming to 200, so again the separation won't be so great if you're only zoomed at 100 / 150.
What are your thoughts on using this for ice hockey? I'm assuming the eye focus would become an issue with helmets/masks. Would you use AF or what manual setting would you try?
I must be doing something wrong. Tried using the R6 in animal mode together with a Commlite adaptor (EF-EOS-R is not available here in Germany, rn) and my EF70-200/2.8 II on my dogs and when my dogs ran towards me, I had some back-focus. But to be fair, I'm unsure if I had the AF distance switch accidentally set to the lower setting. Guess I have to try it again.
Great video. Glad you like the R6 for sports photography. I would use R5 for bird/wildlife photography as I need to crop a lot all the time because we are not able to get close to the wild animals.
Have you tried using the R6 and "people" auto-focus when shooting American football. I've had my R6 for about a month and shooting high school football I find it can be difficult switching focus from one player to another...from the quarterback to a receiver running down the field , for example.
I have ordered my R6 and i shoot Australian rules football which is played on a large oval shaped field with many players around the action. How well do you think it will select a specific individual and which tracking mode would you suggest? Maybe 2?? Great information in this video. I found it extremely helpful
If you're trying to single one out I think the face detection will do a great job. if it jumps to another face you can quickly switch. But if it doesn't, just use one of the middle fields. I bet it works great

I have also bought the Canon R6 a couple of weeks ago but I have a few problems. With most of my lenses I can't shoot in high fps mode when using mechanical shutter. The icon is white and flashing. Even with my battery grip and fully loaded batteries. Even my old trusty Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS USM (first generation) that I have for about 15 years can only reach 6 fps at most with mechanical shutter. The only lens that can shoot in high fps is the Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 L IS USM Macro. Then the icon turns green and I can shoot 12 fps. Is this because of the adapter that I use for the moment (Commlite CM-EF-EOS R) or is this because of the R6 itself?
@@damiencooper So you can easily reach 10 fps or 12 fpx using the mechanical shutter with normal (and older) EF lenses? Then I have to wait to receive the Canon adapter. This is still in backorder here in Belgium. That is also why I chose to buy another one for the time being. It is still weird that 1 lens worked perfectly.
I just switched from Sony to canon, with Sony I have used ur luts and it was amazing. Using canon R6 clog I am having a hard time exposing correctly, exposure graph on camera shows correct exposure but when I bring it to computer some of the highlights are crushed and some of the shadows way deeper, I just bought your Canon Luts. Like always it looks amazing but would you be able to explain in one video how exactly to expose on R6 using clog please? Some people say go two stops up and some day stay in the middle and other says go a stop down. It’s so confusing. Thanks
First of all thanks for the support. As for the exposure, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t have a set how to guide. It depends on the situation. In theory you should expose for middle grey or maybe slightly over expose. With this you usually crush highlights a lot beyond recovery. In an Outdoor scene I typically expose for the sky and bring back Midtones in post. The 10bit codec can take a lot before breaking
Hey man, now go try this with a sport that requires a full face helmet. I tried BMX and motocross with my R6 and found it has a hard time nailing focus with the AF on.
I have problems with auto exposure on the R6 it’s always darker when shooting photos than in real life any fix for this? Really slows down my time because I have to do the exposure manually really sucks.
How do you auto expose? I hardly ever use auto exposure. But if I would I would do manual with auto iso. If it’s always too dark, set it to EV compensation +1
Fred Hi not a Pro camera at all lol. A Pro camera would be something like the Canon EOS 6D mark iii. Anywho, Even in video the exposure stays dark on me when I am with my back to the Sun. Same for photos. I have it in AV settings on C3 saved. The AF is awesome also the 20fps no blackout can track birds in flight really awesome.
@@letsfindout6587 It's a pro camera man. The specs are incredible and this is coming from an R5 owner. I don't use AV, only manual and I find no issues with exposure. As far as screen goes, maybe you just need to lighten up the display? Or also turn on the EXPO. SIMULATION on, this makes the viewfinder act like a OVF but better with highly accurate results. If not, I'm not sure I can be much help, but you have a great cam, I would say learn manual mode very well so you can be extremely fast in any situation. Practice, practice, practice!
I've been a big fan of you guys for a while now for your video content! I was happily surprised to hear you say you had the 1D Mark III because that was my bread and butter camera since 2007 for 12 years for my sports photography. I just sold that camera a few months ago to a good home (still looks brand new) and it felt like I was giving away my first born. It's amazing how far technology has come, isn't it? Btw, I love the way Belle wears that lens hood like a piece of jewelry. I'm wondering if this trend will catch on? Beautiful pics btw, and some amazing looking athletes you have there. 💪✌️
I still remember the day I officially opened my business, walked in the store and left with my first 1D body. Will never forget that day! And I doubt it’ll catch on as I for example gave too large hands/arms for it 😀
@@damiencooper 🤣 🤣 You know, I had to order my 1D online, and pay with money orders as I didn't have a credit card yet. I remember biking home after sending payment out and I was literally shaking with nerves having spent more money than I ever had my entire life. But when I got that camera... wow! Even the box/packaging was professional! The new Canon mirrorless cameras are some of the nicest ergonomically right now, but I don't think I've ever felt a beast like the 1D before or since. Good luck to you guys and look forward to more videos!
It's amazing how time flies. I still have my 1D3 that I bought used in 2009 from Adorama. It was practically brand new (low shutter count) and previously owned by USA Today (sticker inside of battery door) because of the mirror issue. I sent to Canon for inspection and repair and it was like I bought a brand new camera. It's been 11 years. I was hoping my daughter took up photography and I would give it to her, but the young'ns are all about the camera phones. I plan to sell it since I no longer use it. How much did you get for the 1D3, if you don't mind saying?
i your giving sample raw file shot on the link ill probably subscribe,. every one wants to see the raw file,. and play on it on slider before deciding to buy,.
It really depends on what you shoot. I went with the R6 because it has better low light capability than the R5 and because I don’t shoot video. The only reason I would want the R5 would be the ability to do large crops because of the resolution but I didn’t want that enough to pay the price diff. :)
R6... The missing of the top lcd screen is a deal breaker. How can they sell a 2700€ professional camera without a top screen. That is all i look at for 90% of the cases. It looks like a rebel Ti.
I've been using cameras with 20 or less MPs for bird, wildlife and sports photography for years with no problems at all. I even have large prints that look great. I just don't understand these sort of comments, especially when the poster doesn't qualify their statement (i.e. why it isn't enough). It seems that it's an attempt to start an argument.
Really Fabian, have you used one ? You are talking rubbish mate, the R6s 20 MP performs more like 26 or 30 MP. If 20 MP isn't usable you'd better tell all the pro photographers using their 1DX 1, 2 or 3s that they aren't usable !

I would assume it’s the adapter. I have canon original and no problems
Monkeypixels Thanks, I am usually outside in day light with bright sky. Will follow ur advise and see.

Hey man, now go try this with a sport that requires a full face helmet. I tried BMX and motocross with my R6 and found it has a hard time nailing focus with the AF on.
Were you using eye autofocus? Use zone or spot focus continuous and it will work
@@burritobrosvideos8060 thanks
Hey man I’m new to using my Canon EOS R6, how can I setup the 20 frames per second?
In the Q menu press the H+. I think that’s what it was
I have problems with auto exposure on the R6 it’s always darker when shooting photos than in real life any fix for this? Really slows down my time because I have to do the exposure manually really sucks.
How do you auto expose? I hardly ever use auto exposure. But if I would I would do manual with auto iso.
If it’s always too dark, set it to EV compensation +1
LMAO wow never imagined to hear people complain about using manual mode on a pro camera
Let’s Find Out There is a light meter built in every camera. Use it!
Would of been good to see with older ef lenses and adapter.
Done a video about comparing EF to RF with adapter. no difference
How is it in video is it great can you do video review for filmmakin
Osman Fagir will do soon
Woah, I was just thinking about how the R6 pairs with the 70-200
So nice
thank you
Close the window on the lens hood :-))
And I doubt it’ll catch on as I for example gave too large hands/arms for it 😀
@@damiencooper 🤣 🤣
You know, I had to order my 1D online, and pay with money orders as I didn't have a credit card yet.
@@Methodical2 I think I got around $800 cdn.
@@77dris Nice. I sold mine a year or so ago and got around $500 or so (can't recall exact amount).
Imho the RF70-200 2.8 sucks, no teleconverter work with it .. better to use the EF 70-200 III and the 1.4 + 2.0 III converter, but love my R6
Breath dude..😂 talk about how sharp the 70-200RF is? Like prime lens sharp🔥
hell yeah. And I will still buy the EF version instead :/

i your giving sample raw file shot on the link ill probably subscribe,. every one wants to see the raw file,. and play on it on slider before deciding to buy,.
R5 or R6... im stuck
It really depends on what you shoot. I went with the R6 because it has better low light capability than the R5 and because I don’t shoot video. The only reason I would want the R5 would be the ability to do large crops because of the resolution but I didn’t want that enough to pay the price diff. :)
There seems to be some serious distortion in electronic shutter at 4:44 image on the left.
👍
R6... The missing of the top lcd screen is a deal breaker. How can they sell a 2700€ professional camera without a top screen. That is all i look at for 90% of the cases. It looks like a rebel Ti.
Photo quality is not as good as R5.
R6 is not usable with that low MP
ok
Obviously a pixel peeper not a photographer!
Using Topaz Gigapixel with the R6 is great if wanting more resolution
Really Fabian, have you used one ? You are talking rubbish mate, the R6s 20 MP performs more like 26 or 30 MP. If 20 MP isn't usable you'd better tell all the pro photographers using their 1DX 1, 2 or 3s that they aren't usable !
Hello. How are you ?? regards
excellent video.
could you share your adjustment to have that auto focus ???
grateful.
