  • Lesson #12: In Lesson 10 and 11 of my "lessons" series, I covered x wings and the swordfish. the XY wing is an extension of both of these Sudoku solving techniques, and the logic is the same. I cover three different examples of the XY wing in this lesson, please pause and rewind until you understand the technique. It will serve you well in solving harder level Sudoku puzzles. Thanks for watching!

When the XY is shown to me, it becomes obvious. However, the odd of me finding one in the wild are slim to none!

Согласен на 100%! Быстрее банальным перебором решить судоку, чем искать (и не найти) необходимые пары. 😏

Excellent video - I’ve watched this video three times over the past week and today I finally found and solved an xy wing. It feels great to have spotted an xy wing and worked out the logic. I have been struggling with the xy concept for sometime and this video make total sense to me. Thank you.

What I found tricky here was the reduction for eliminating the possibilities. Looking at example 1 the possibilities were (2368) for cell positioned at (2,3) of block (1,2). This was rapidly stated to be of only possible values (36). This was the pivot cell and so was an essential piece of the argument. I was struggling to see how the other possibilities were eliminated.

Not following very well, but definitely do a spot check now with the XY and it helps identifies the single # that goes in the box. I use probabilities which work only 90% of the time, though

I copied this puzzle a couple of months ago, stowed it away, and tried to solve it on my own this morning. I found a different y wing: cells 41, 63 (pivot) and 69 which combined eliminate the 469 in cell 61, leaving a 3 for that cell. Maybe technically it's not a y wing but I think it works.

For example 1 - I don't see how this is a y-wing. Both of the wing cells have only two candidates, yes, but BOTH candidates in each of the wing cells are also in the pivot cell. That is until at 1:05 two candidates in the pivot cell magically disappear to make the pattern fit the definition. How did you know which of the 4 original candidates in the pivot cell to eliminate?

if thats xy wing there is another one with the 79 in the middle box aka box 5, one wing is in box 2 contains 47 and the other wing is in the box 4 and contains 49, either way both box 2 and 4 could have number 4 but that solves nothing
i wonder is it xy wing at all or it is but its just unusable xy wing
    someone ?

2nd example was not needed as we had a 1,5 double which would have left a naked 7 and a naked 8 which would have solved it a lot quicker.

0:33 Instead of relying on Google first-page response, in the future how about curating/picking a clearer definition? Because Google's was awful. "unit".... okayyyy, what a uselessly broad term. Ugh. And how does it define "first"? It doesn't. If you're going to try to teach you have to use well-thought out materials that are appropriate to beginners. I think your videos have merit, but teaching is a skill that requires effort to think llike someone who knows little/nothing of the topic you are trying to teach. At 1:02 we see 6,B lose two candidates without explanation. You never explain HOW you spot an X/Y wing, they're just magically green now. Nor do you explain why that is the "pivot" cell (we have to guess it's related to intersection). Again, I think your vids have merit, but you need to proceed from the standpoint that the viewer does not know what you know.

1:53 Seriously? SERIOUSLY? That's your explanation for the naming? Seriously thinking about unsubscribing.
