Agreed. Although I still think the original face is creepy, it is a little goofy & looks like that Jerma meme. This version of the face looks like something out of a Martian Walls video, and I love it.
That detail of Joseph opening his eyes really spooked me. Like imagine you're sleeping, and something/someone is watching you and you suddenly wake up and see something at the corner of your eye.
This is probably the best fanmade Overthrone video yet, perhaps even better than the original one. It manages to integrate the original episode more while giving the scare factor more buildup. Congratulations, MemeBear, you really outdid yourself here. EDIT: I think the most disturbing part has to be at 2:30, where the 'normal' Angel Gabriel leaves the Sheppards to talk to Mary, yet is impersonated by !Gabriel for the rest of the episode. Does that imply that his alternate ambushed him on the way, killed him and impersonated him? Oh and of course, there is also the sequence from 4:50 to 5:19, where !Gabriel is laughing at how he decieved everyone which really tripped me up for a while. Watching this at 9 in the evening for me was a huge mistake.
I believe that is how it goes, although I do feel the need to correct you that !Gabriel (or who I like to call the False Shepherd) isn’t just his alternate, but also Satan himself. In “Exhibition”, there is a hidden line of text inside the captions after the Alternate Gabriel appears that describes Satan disguising himself as an angel of light.
I love how the auto generated captions says "Thank you" in the end of the video (6:40) even when there's no audible voice here. And in general very awesome work. Maybe you should make another episodes too :D
One thing they could implement is the angel having a “human” face and he takes on subtle characteristics of actual humans as he studies and interacts with their mannerisms..
The original is one of the scariest videos I’ve ever seen, but this? I think this actually tops that. It showing the original video before things get spooky makes it feel like the tape actually gets corrupted by something horrible halfway through it. The “I am the AAAAAAA” in the original was unsettling, but felt more like a spooky shitpost than an actual horror moment. The flickering with the smile is so much scarier, and Gabriel’s message to Mary, instead of just reversed whispering, actually sounds like something demonic. Another great improvement on the original is the scene where Gabriel appears to the shepherds. With this, instead of a droning static sound playing over his appearance, there’s a loud, almost stormy droning, and the field is covered in darkness. Again, it makes the angel and everything it’s doing feel evil, hellish, instead of it thinly veiling what it really is. The shepherds cowering under each other instead of just being frozen is a nice touch too. And OH MY GOD, the buildup where Gabriel is shrouded in darkness and just goes silent, right before he says, “I know what you dread,” I had to rewind a couple times to gather my courage, because I knew what was coming. I could actually feel my heart rate increase. And then, when he does say it, instead of having that grainy, staticky sound to it like with the rest of the audio here, it’s crystal clear. And then, he just…pauses. I was expecting the loud, jarring “Jesus loves me” song but no. The static gets louder, and h e g e t s h u m a n e y e s. Then, the original cartoon comes back, making you feel like everything’s alright again, but of course it isn’t. He gradually appears, and by the way, this segment really injects that, “God has been overthrown. Satan has taken his place, and every deed done for God has been for the Devil.” feeling. And him breaking into that goddamn smile and seeming to laugh silently at his success over all that is good in the world; honestly, in the original, I never felt scared of Gabriel, just unnerved by him, but here, I flt like he was posing an immediate threat to my life. The church at the end is a great improvement over the original ending, again, selling the feeling of utter hopelessness that Satan overthrowing God evokes. I really hope you do remakes of the other ones as well, I’d love to see your darker, more brutal style to horror on that. Phenomenal work.

This video is so good. I think it's one of the best Overthrone remakes i've seen. The part where Gabriel's face distorts is so well done. Between "Jesus Loves Me" innocently playing in the background to the way Gabriel's face slowly contorts into a horrific, wide-eyed grin. Besides, I didn't need sleep anyway.
Memebear it’s great to have you back your content truly will always be unique and creative. Good to see you return can’t wait for more content later on keep up the amazing work, it honestly feels like a miracle to see you rise back up again.
The reason that the original video is so scary - and the series in general - is the looming sense of dread, of fear - that something might happen. The fear comes from the loss of control, the doubt in something you are conditioned to trust, the sense of dread that slowly builds throughout the video with the imagery. These are the elements of terror - what makes something not only just scary (a jumpscare could also make someone scared) but actually deeply terrifies people if done correctly. I feel that in this video, not only have you captured an element of this, but you have expanded on the dread aspect of it. When I first read the title, I thought this video was going to be full of jumpscares and creepy jump cuts. To my great approval, this video is not only greatly inspired by the original - it took the aspects of terror and improved on them. Good on you, MemeBear - you've improved on an analogue horror masterpiece.
I watched this early in the morning when it was still kinda dark and when Gabriel appeared the local church started to ring it's bell, now I know what Cardiac Arrest feels like
I don't know much about visual design, but i am very into sound design. I just want to say there's so much great use of the audio aspect in this video. Here's some of my favorite bits: 0:23 The promising, uplifting music being suddenly cut off, to be replaced with eerie ambience- akin to God's rule being cut off, to be replaced with Gabriel's 1:00 is a similar situation, with the long buildup and sudden blackout 2:56 This is a different backwards message than the original. I'm too lazy to reverse it right now lol 3:10 This sudden replay, in my eyes, is a representation of Gabriel sending a new message to the shepherds just in time to convince the people of what he wants. This happens a lot, but this one felt more prominent, as there even was a shepherd directly involved. also i love joseph's eyes opening 3:50 Now we're getting to the good stuff. This sound is similar, but not the same as, the sound from the original. It's got this feeling attached to it, like an overwhelming sense of doom. It also happens right as the sheep turns, which may signify Lucifer turning against God. (i know that happens in the original too) 4:25 Absolute favorite part. The constant presence of that backround buzz suddenly disappearing before Gabriel says "I know what you dread." is just *chef's kiss* To me it represents the ever-presence of god suddenly being destroyed. Also to add something like 4 months later, I love how "I know what you dread" feels so much clearer than the previous line. It's like Gabriel is no longer talking to the shepherds, but to the viewer. 4:35 The people immediately returning to uplifting singing is terrifying in and of itself if you think about it. They were fooled so easily. 5:15 Can't believe i wrote this whole thing and forgot to mention the scream. God this is horrifying, it sounds like a car skidding across the road right before an accident. 5:20 The sound in the background here reminds me of the one from earlier, but there's something distinctly different about it. Instead of being an overwhelming sense of danger, it's like the aftermath, the destruction that followed. The booming of Satan's "voice" (aka the sound his text makes) in contrast with the silence of Jesus's shows how drastic the shift in power from the two was. It pairs excellently with Satan's large, bold, all caps text and Jesus's small, thin, all lowercase text. 5:57 I don't know what that sound is but i love it. Almost reminds me of the Minecraft nether ambience (i know just hear me out). Like the thousands of souls in one of those soul sand valleys collectively trying to scream, when only whispers come out. 6:28 That sudden cut is so jarring, and i mean that in the best way possible. The fact that it comes right after Jesus's pleas for help from god makes me see it as a way of saying "There is no god left to help you." 6:35 The return to eerie ambience is like jarring truth to me, like the reality of God's death trying to break through. It stays for much longer this time, as if the viewer is finally adjusting to the truth. 6:50 This adjustment is immediately lost, as the viewer looks back at the story and convinces themself that God is alive, and everything is doing fine. The reality is still in their subconscious, represented by Gabriel slowly fading in. MemeBear, you've done it again. Amazing work.
I love Alex Kister and his series, but the first episode was always weak and this redoes it perfectly kind of giving the whole series a great cold open!
Honestly, this makes it seem more like "Gabriel" is inserting himself into the Beginners Bible... just to flex to the viewers on what he's done. Also I found the townsfolk cheering for him unintentionally funny... and then the freaky face happened... Now I gotta be real, I always found the original face a bit unnerving, with the sudden change and the distored music in the background (also big almost cartoonish looking eyes like that scares me). I know some people find it funny and I wish I was one of them. But this... honestly made it way more disturbing looking and alot more accurate to the Alternates look now that they've gotten their identity/style. Loved it!
This is definetilly one of memebears best work yet and i hope to see more mandela catalog videos on this channel because Alex’s concepts are good but have memebear add that little spice to them really makes it unforgettable
This is creepy as hell! Well done! And I am so glad you made Joseph wake up in a quick flash at the end too. Gave me chills. Always thought in the original it made him badass to just no-sell Lucifer like that.
I got literal shivers from this. You always outdo yourself on this stuff, memebear, HOW DO YOU DO THAT. Also I'm looking forward to your non-VHS blender stuff!
I've found out what truly terrifies me about these designs in analog horror, and it's those upside down crescent moon shaped eyes (e.g. 5:07). Almost every single analog horror creator has used them at the peak moments of their videos, and they can convey either a sadistic grin or pure fear. It's so effective.
Im so glad to know im not the only one, analog horrors criticisms are valid, but every time that whole crescent moon eyes with the stretched smiled trope happens, I love it. It unnerves me
I really like this take on a classic! I like how you included more unedited footage from the original cartoon, that bit of extra time helps lull the viewer into a false sense of security. The effects on Alt-Gabe are pretty good too; really creepy to look at. Though I will admit he looked kinda wall-eyed in some parts. Speaking of eyes, I really like the addition of Joseph's eyes opening, did not expect that at all. Overall good job!
for everyone that wants to watch, but has some issue with the flashing, here are the time stamps to enjoy without your eyes hurting :) 0:43 0:55 2:29 2:56 3:06 3:15 5:04-5:19 (I recommend skimming through this part)
This is an amazing remake! Seeing more original unedited bits from the Bible cartoon were nice as well and honestly Gabriel's faces scared me more here than the original lol
I love this remake. Because it gives me the same feelings that the first time I saw the original version of Overthrone. On the others ARGs, it is always "Government conspiracy", "Spores" or "Different Dimensions". But this made me realize that was more serious. Because it is not just attack the christianism like a 80s Satanist. It was saying that something happened on the origin of the most-known religion. That this time, this ARG was going deeper than most.
You’ve probably been told this countless times, but this is a very good remake. The original has its own charm, but I was always of the opinion that it needed a remake similar to VOL.1 and this delivers.
I don’t even have any words to describe this. I am a follower of Christ and this kind of horror hits harder than anything else to me, the whole idea of lucifer becoming a false savior and overthrowing the Son of God is absolutely horrifying. Just typing this I have chills running down my spine at the thought of this being real. however I know that lucifer is nothing but a lion without teeth, he has no power over me because I have accepted Christ as my savior and he silences all fear. Well done man this video was amazing
As a religious man myself, i agree and this was pretty scary lol. The idea of the Alternates taking everything you love and trust (religion, friends, family etc) and corrupting it until you cant trust anything is pretty horrifying. Plus the implications that this Alternate had attacked Gabriel and taken his form (assuming that the angel in the beginning is the real Gabriel and that he is replaced by the time Mary meets the other Gabriel.) Is pretty spooky too since the idea that not even Angels are safe is pretty terrifying.
Was watching this during a pretty bad thunderstorm, and at this exact point in the video ( 4:32 ), lightning struck outside my house and the lights went out. That’s fun.
This is great! The only thing I can got lost in translation is the removal of the original Archangel Gabriel image to show the subtle differences between him and the alternate, which has no wings and a slightly longer face.
oh my god I’m speechless lol. this is so special to me, especially coming from you!!!! the original is very outdated and this honestly breathes so much new life into it ❤️❤️❤️

The fact that it comes right after Jesus's pleas for help from god makes me see it as a way of saying "There is no god left to help you."
6:35 The return to eerie ambience is like jarring truth to me, like the reality of God's death trying to break through.
This was so awesome, it gave me vibes of The Mandela catalogue (obviously) and The Walten Files
Yea 5:07 reminds me alot of the walten files, rosemaries death specificallym I thought I was the only one who made that connection lmao
4:23 the analog horror beat drop 🔥✍️

2:56 "I am the one true savior; I must reverse the illusion; Joseph is next"
I love Alex Kister and his series, but the first episode was always weak and this redoes it perfectly kind of giving the whole series a great cold open!
Imagine editing this is in on a real Beginners Bible VHS tape and the amount of panic that would ensue and how many kids would be traumatized.
I was thinking that too
"It is not worth the risk" at the beginning was super cool! I love references!
Loved it!

*Sir that is one of the scariest things I have ever seen in my life.*
This is so cool, it’s awesome to see Mandela catalogue episode 1 remade ( great job meme bear )
Mainly works bc it makes the monster larger or Gives the impresion of having big pupils.
Im so glad to know im not the only one, analog horrors criticisms are valid, but every time that whole crescent moon eyes with the stretched smiled trope happens, I love it. It unnerves me
I think cartoon cat was the origin of the stretched out eyes. (also a Trevor Henderson analogue horror would be cool tbh)
I think Martín walls inspired this trend, and I swear, it always gets me. It’s like a primal fear.
Yes jesus loves me the bible tells me so
I find myself coming back to this more than the original. Really nice work!
I love the original version, but this might aswell be the official one from now on. It's amazing!
WHOA Okay the False Shepherd opening his eyes literally made me recoil, well-fucking-done!
THIS IS AMAZING, I always found gabriel/the false shepherd to be not that scary, but this changes everything.
I have to say... You sir, just put analog horror to the next level! Now I'm gonna avoid sleeping!
Wow Wow Wow! I absolutely loved this remake. Great job on this good sir!
well this is an unexpected video, but a welcomed one
Most the awesome fan made ever!
this looks amazing yo !! !! i love gabriels redesign especially :D
I like how you made it feel way less edited the the original. This was a really good remake to a very outdated video.
0:16 = Nothing is worth the risk, nothing is worth the risk, nothing is worth the risk...
i love that riley it’s still active

I feel like the dirt stains on my screen were active parts of this short movie lmao
Great remake!
This is an amazing remake! Seeing more original unedited bits from the Bible cartoon were nice as well and honestly Gabriel's faces scared me more here than the original lol
Yup, I’m sleeping with the lights on tonight.
memebear you've surpassed every existant boundary with this one, HUGE congratulations man
MEME'S BACK HELL YEAH
can't wait to see more progress, this is so sick omg >:O
wow this was amazing, I'd love to see you continue remaking these!
The legend! He’s back!
holy shit right on my 21 bday memebear returns!!! im excited for what else you got in store! even the non vhs stuff! much love always!
Did anyone ask you to scare the living hell out of me?
(Epic job on this remake)
BRUH THE “I KNOW WHAT YOU DREAD” GAVE ME FUCKING CHILLS TO MY CORE
Okay, this is much scarier than the original
hey this came out on my birthday! what a spooky scary present, thank you MemeBear :D
"Don't you see"?
As a religious man myself, i agree and this was pretty scary lol. The idea of the Alternates taking everything you love and trust (religion, friends, family etc) and corrupting it until you cant trust anything is pretty horrifying. Plus the implications that this Alternate had attacked Gabriel and taken his form (assuming that the angel in the beginning is the real Gabriel and that he is replaced by the time Mary meets the other Gabriel.) Is pretty spooky too since the idea that not even Angels are safe is pretty terrifying.
How do you know that for sure? 🤔
@@suezuccati304 i have a mirror so...
Keep telling yourself that :)
I love how this version makes it look more like some messed up lost media, especially with the credits at the end like everything's normal again.
Cool. Fan made Mandela Catalogue ideas really never made it to bigger RUclipsrs
Yes, Just Yes.,, Also I'm Very Glad You Decided To Stay. :D
Oh how he has returned…to bless us with his art
This is such a good remake, I love it.
3:39 Whey cup Whey cup Whey cup xd
If wendigoon was traumatized by the original imagine him seeing this
Welcome back dear memebear ❤
Was watching this during a pretty bad thunderstorm, and at this exact point in the video ( 4:32 ), lightning struck outside my house and the lights went out. That’s fun.
This gave me the most chills I’ve ever had watching a RUclips video
and forgot i had max volume…
This is great! The only thing I can got lost in translation is the removal of the original Archangel Gabriel image to show the subtle differences between him and the alternate, which has no wings and a slightly longer face.
