Thanks for posting this tip! I was running out of things to try, then I finally found your video. While your tip worked the behavior on my 2020 iMac was a bit different. I popped the ram tray out, pressed the power button while simultaneously plugging in the power cable. The fans started up like an airplane then I pressed the power button to shut off the iMac. I pushed the ram tray back pressed the power button and the Apple Logo finally appeared. I then restarted in Disk Utility mode and ran a repair on the volumes, containers, and then disks. I then rebooted (pressing command+ option + P + R) to clear the VRAM, then rebooted again (pressing shift + control + option) to clear the SMC. I rebooted then booted all the way up to then performed a shutdown. I’m now booted all the way up successfully and upgrading MacOS to the latest version. Thanks again for sharing this fix!!

Just did a similar fix with my iMac. Same issue, black screen, wouldn’t boot up, tried every startup trick and nothing worked. Ended up ejecting the RAM slots on the back and hitting it with an air duster. Tried starting a couple of times and same issue. It wasn’t until I held Cmd+Opt+P+R on startup, that it finally decided to boot up. Got a LOUD startup chime and it started properly. Working fine now.

Holy shit - this saved a 2019 27" 5K iMac - I removed the display for upgrading to an SSD - reconnected the screen and got no signal at all on the display (total black screen and only two green LEDs on the motherboard. I have reset SMC, and tried to reset PRAM (does not work since there is no boot sequence).
I opened the damn thing again and checked all the cables and connectors under a microscope but could not find any damage....
I always had the feeling that there was a reset problem on the motherboard but did not know how to reset it completely...
This "Eject the RAM. Plug back in the iMac. Power on the iMac with the RAM ejected" I´ve done it twice and now the damn iMac, which ate away 2-3 hours of troubleshooting time runs again!
Thank you so much for posting this video, and saving a couple of big bucks and hours of sadness.

My imac went completely unresponsive during a security update (2020-005 for High Sierra). Unresponsive to any USB input, including keyboard. Tried everything under the sun, your solution is the one that worked. Thank you!! Saved me a lot of trouble. One thing to note though: it didn’t make any sounds and the screen didn’t turn on at all, I honestly thought it might not work. When I put the RAM back it, it took a while but it booted and now it continues the update installation. We’ll see how it goes after it finishes.

I was having a similar but different issue with a late 2015 27" iMac. I use it as a second monitor and occasionally it would revert to a standalone computer. When I'd try to reset it as a monitor (Command +F2) it both machines would react, but the monitor iMac would stay black. I tried your solution and so far it has worked!!! YAY! Thanks!

This happened this morning and would boot with the chime and despite zapping the pram and resetting the smc behaved the same with no video display on the iMac display or any of my two external displays. Strangely enough your video worked. And I'd reseated the ram within the machine within a month or two at most previous. I also blow out the air vents with compressed air regularly because I've seen buildup of dust causing greater processor throttling noticeably.

Even as this is an old video! But you also saved my life! My logic board of an 2014 late iMac broke. So I got a very cheap logic board fron an iMac 2015. I swapped it in and the first boot got a chime and an Apple Logo. Yes it worked with the Display of the original late 2014 iMac, even if some people (especially from Apple) stated that this will not work.
I couldn't boot into my formerly installed NVME-SSD (from the 2014 iMac), so I hought there might be a problem with the installation. Couldn't go into the option mode to choose a boot stick, couldn't go into the restore mode. Then resetted the NVRAM with unplugging, waiting for 30 seconds, pushing the power button for more than 5 seconds, put in the power cord, chime but again no chance to get by with booting to the stick. OK tried resetting PRAM. Bam after that no chime, no screen, no nothing. Again resetting NVRAM, bam loud FAN-Noise no chime, no screen.
Then I saw your Video. I thought to myself " this will never fix my problem, but what do I have to loose?". OK took out the powercord, ejected Ram, put the power cord in, loud beeps (now some reaction yeahhhh). Put in the power cord, used the power-button and the system got a Chime an Apple-Logo and just booted into the Catalina System without any issue.
Hail to you man I am so happy! Many many many thanks to you!
    Greets René from Germany!

Mid 2010 27". Mine symptoms: all works fine and suddenly backlight goes OFF but LCD keeps working (I can see image if I point strong light to the screen). When I put it to sleep ctrl+shift+eject then move mouse, screen turns ON and backlight goes ON for awhile then backlight goes OFF again. Tried the method mentioned here, also all kind of boot up shortcuts, replaced RAM from another working machine still the same. Temperature normal, not much of heating present. What's happening actually: problem is reproducible when I increase backlight from 0 to e.g. 6+ but all works fine with (near) minimum backlight and with max backlight. If I try to decrease backlight from maximum even slightly, e.g. by one, the backlight shortly goes OFF. Weird. The only problem with max backlight is I can't stand it for a long when outside light is weak, it gets painful for eyes. Also max backlight produces some sort of overheating especially in summer and fans become louder. The problem with minimal (or near minimal) backlight is that you can't see anything on sunny day. Not perfect, stil works somehow. :-(

@@Channelhandle904 I use this iMac as 2nd screen only. Steps I do each time to avoid "screen goes black" issue:
      1. turn it ON and login with my user
      2. set brightness to max (e.g. by keep pressing F2 button on its keyboard)
      3. connect it as 2nd display via cable to my laptop
      4. set brightness to max once more (because it automatically changes brightness by itself after step 3)

Outstanding! I was at my wit's end after trying everything I could find online (keyboard options, reboots, re-install OSX, disk repair etc.) about this intermittent black screen on my iMac. Your "cleanout" solution worked beautifully. My Mac is an eariier model 2013, but the procedure with the power cord worked just fine.
Thanks for posting this, I was at the point of parting with $$$$ to get a professional fix. Saved me heaps of money. Much appreciated.

I haven't had the issue myself, sounds like your ram wasn't seated correctly, or it shifted due to heating and cooling over time. Thankfully the RAM wasn't bad and you were able to fix. Thankfully in addition it wasn't your logic board . Maybe also blowing the dust out also helped with heating, if the exhaust was blocked by the dust, or it was on something that generated too much heat.
I have only had two macs out of all the one's i've owned that actually required warranty work.

That’s very interesting, who told you about the solution? Of course I’m having this problem because I’m looking up a solution for mine but the solution for mine is to turn down the brightness on my monitor because if I turn it up to high, the screen blacked out and also in order to get the screen to turn back on you hold down shift control and hit the eject button. No need to do hard resets. If your issue is different than mine then these Macs were just doomed from the start.

Thank you for this video. Mine is a 2017 imac; never had a problem; but the screen just goes black for a few seconds; then opens back up without loss of data (typing an email and nothing changed). The only thing I have done different was to connect it to another monitor (TV); but the TV was off. I was running multiple programs; so could it have been overworking; which caused these seconds of back screen issues? I have turned all the other programs off; about 10 minutes ago; and it hasn't happened to me yet; so far. Thanks again for any advice.

2010 iMac 27" - screen goes black if you don't have the brightness level way down. If you try to turn it up even half way, screen goes black. Press Command+Option+Eject to put it to sleep, then press them again to wake it up. Screen is on again but you've got about 2-3 seconds to turn the brightness down before it goes black again. If the brightness is way down, screen will stay on as long as you want. But you can't really work in Photoshop with a dim screen!!!
I tried what this guy is proposing and it didn't work for me. The NVRAM reset did't work either. I have also replaced the power supply and the video inverter card per other people's "solutions" and that didn't work either.

Question, was this the BACKLIGHT not working? or nothing at all on the screen? I have the same one but I'm just missing my back light. Any help or test would be greatly appreciated!

My iMac JUST started doing this...and then it got even more frequent (although it never really went all black. Just 1-2 seconds at time. It also affected the track pad as well.) Very annoying.
I just tried your suggestion and it worked perfectly. The screen looks great again, no dropouts at all. Everything back to normal. (It's been about 2 hours since the fix-as of this moment*).
    THANK YOU!!!
*If the blackout problem starts up again, I'll update my message here.

Paul Garafola hey Paul cool! If it stays good for a week then starts happening again it is most likely bad RAM. Mine was good for a few weeks then it started happening again- and I got tired of pulling out the ram. I finally replaced the ram and not one issue! I had crucial 32GB in there and replaced it with crucial 32GB.

Paul Garafola I used crucial ram- that's the brand. I replaced it under warranty.

Had SUPER high hopes for this hack since it seemed to work for everyone else. It did help for exactly 2 minutes before reverting to black screen. Thankfully this was just enough time to print some time sensitive docs. Will try again though...I have hope. May upgrade RAM too to help. Thanks for sharing :)

I tried every trick in the book. Forced to call Apple, still no results. They told me to bring it in to Apple for a look-see.
So I came across this video and figured one work trick would not hurt before I drag it to the Genius Bar. Well much to my surprise my 2009 iMac is now back to its reliable self. Excellent solution
    - so far!

Dude, I love that voodoo you do. Imac mid 2010 27". The screen would barely stay on for a minute. Tried your solution and it worked. I was pretty ready to give up on this machine and buy another, but its OK now. Not sure of his will perma fix or temp fix, but I think you ha e bought me some time at least, so thanks for that. I was amazed at the dust build up in the ram area, I cleaned it with an airgun. Could that be the problem?

I have a late 2014 iMac 27" with 5K Display. I've been having this exact issue for months. I took it into the genius bar a couple months ago. They couldn't find anything wrong, but they did say that I have non-Apple Ram installed, and suggested I remove it, but gave me the option. I had them leave it in. Maybe that's the problem? Do you have non-Apple ram? I'll give your fix a try. Thanks!

3 24/2020 Mid2011 27" iMac halfway to fixing I think lots of fine dust near Mory holders after fan came on full blast and 3 beeps after cleaning memory chips found all working by testing them in a working iMac mini replaced into 27" iMac when turning iMac back on black screen 1 beep which I think is a bad 3.5 HD constantly clicking from having plugged and unplugged it so many time with the power on. Ordered a Torx screwdriver set so I can go deeper into the 2011 iMac and replacing the HD with an SSD 500GB, hoping that will allow for booting and no blackout screen when booting ( screen will turn on for a split second if I hit a key while booting then black again. Next, if it boots will have to figure out how to get an OS installed to the SSD HD.

At first I had a bunch of fan noise, and I definitely got the flying dust (even my ram slots were full of dust, so I vacuumed them out). But after the second restart, fan noise was gone.
