The U.S. continues to launch airstrikes on Yemen in response to the campaign of missile and drone attacks on commercial ships along key global trade routes through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden led by Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis. The Houthi strikes have expanded from targets connected to Israel, in protest of the siege and bombing of Gaza, to ships affiliated with the U.S. and U.K. in what the group calls acts of self-defense. "The Houthis have been extremely explicit and repeat on an almost daily basis that their attacks on ships in the Red Sea will stop as soon as the Gaza war ends," says Helen Lackner, author of several books on Yemen, who describes the history of the Houthis, the political landscape in Yemen, and debunks the idea the group is controlled by Iran. "The Iranian involvement has become greater, but it's very important to know that the Houthis are an independent movement. The Houthis are not Iranian proxies. … They make their own decisions."

In the US we absolutely refuse to let anyone speak for themselves. It took forever for us to finally admit they weren't just "pirates"... who, by some strange and inexplicable coincidence, just happened to become a big problem right after we started backing slaughter in Gaza. That was so sus, that I actually went looking for a better explanation, because it was just too coincidental. Took no time at all to realize this wasn't run-of-the-mill piracy, but a blockade. I very much appreciate how this expert points out that living under the rule of Ansar Allah is "not a pleasant experience"--but that the United States intervention in the area has turned them into heroes in Yemen. We make authoritarian militants look good. That's how f-ed up we are.

What a great production this was today. I have learned a lot from this presentation and as a western world citizen, Miss Lackner's provision of this historical backdrop and explanations have added new pieces to the puzzle. My thanks to both Miss Lackner and Democracy Now for this learning moment. Also, I must add that Palestinians are blessed to have the friendship and support of Yemen, no other world countries including my own are taking steps to end this violence.
If Yemen has support for the Palestinian, are they willing to take in those that will probably never return to their Homes ! Gaza will not be free in the way they would like and Northern Gaza will be owned by Isreal when ceasefire exist !

I commend the actions that they are doing to stand up for the Palestinian people.
America’s already done enough damage to the nation of Yemen. If the United States is allowed to support is Israeli apartheid with impunity why can’t the resistance in Yemen, without killing anyone, support the Palestinians? A rhetorical question. We all know why.
It seems that the only way the world will possibly stand up as if it starts hurting other people that are not directly involved, most importantly, the citizens of the world that are still looking away, supporting this genocide or completely clueless.
