Injection Molding 101: Undercuts

- Undercuts are items that interfere with the removal of either half of the mold. Undercuts can appear just about anywhere in the design. These are just as unacceptable, if not worse than a lack of a draft angle on the part. However, some undercuts are necessary and/or unavoidable. In those instances, necessary undercuts are produced by sliding/moving parts in the mold. Keep in mind that creating undercuts is more costly when producing the mold and should be kept to a minimum.

A very good explanation of undercuts in molds !
Thank you so much!
super vid...its really simple to understand since demo is given ..really nice..pls do upload vid for plastics defects too
Thanks so much! Glad you like it
What if the part needs an undercut? Do you have to find another method to make it? Like 3d print or something?
You can still make the part you just need a side action. The mold will be a more complex though, and therefore more expensive.
Are there any general rules of thumb for those? im in school for machining so i want to be able to make molds myself. im wanting to get into plastic injection as a hobby. im looking into making a ram EDM machine right now.
www.moldmakingtechnology.com/articles/mold-side-actions-how-why-and-when-they-work This is a good article on the topic. I work for a plastics machine shop/distribution center and we outsource our mold making. Especially when there are side actions involved.
Awesome, thanks.
But I heard side action can do undercuts. But I have no idea what that is or how it works.
