Nick D'Virgilio has become my favorite prog drummer, hands down. Great singer, too -- he's the lead singer on this track actually.
His work in Spock's Beard, then in Big Big Train, is absolutely amazing... such energy and creativity! Speaking of which, y'all really should listen to some more Big Big Train! I remember you both loved London Plane... and you probably already have lots of recommendations for other specific BBT songs. 🙂
    Cheers!

This great tune is from 2010. Neal Morse left Spock's Beard in 2002. But this did not detract from the great music of this band. Mike Portnoy never was in Spock's Beard. On this tune the drummer is Nick D'Virgilio. He also did vocals.

  • @JohnMacRae23

The Nick D'Virgilio fronted years of Spocks, underrated imo... and whatta drummer. A modern day Phil Collins.

High Five you guys! This is one of my favorite songs by Spock’s Beard after Neal Morse left. Nick D’Virgilio plays 🥁 and is on lead vocals. What an opening song on X!!

Your solo reactions are great as always Nick, but I always look forward to your reactions together with Lex. And your interactions during this video reminded me of why I subscribed to your channel to begin with. I am somewhat familiar with Spock’s Beard, but I have not heard this song before. I’ll have to check out some more from this band. Great song and a great reaction as usual. And some great air drums from Lex at the end.

NDV is now drummer and backing vocalist for Big Big Train. He also collaborated with Neal Morse and (name escapes me) Jennings of Haken. Versatile.

"X" was my favorite album from the NDV era of Spock's Beard and this one was my favorite song because of, as you said, its accessibility. I could play this for anyone not familiar with Spock's or Prog and they would enjoy it. The sad part of this era, to me, was, just as the band was finding its footing again (with this album), NDV would leave and they would have to re-set all over again.

Lex, I so wish you could get that back issue solved. That said I do get the ‘fatigue factor’ for songs or marathons that go past 20 or 30 minutes. You two are in charge so make it work for you. Loving the Spock’s Beard here…. This song is among the best I’ve heard.

    Hey Nick & Lex,
I was hoping that you both would love that song and you were into it, Lex!! I saw you moving to the music, playing some air guitar & just having a major blast with Nick with a huge smile on your face and that's my late Christmas/early birthday gift to me from you and that's from my heart!! As I'd said in my email that I had sent you 2 months ago that it was my gateway into anything Neal Morse music related and that was in 2015 on a Spotify Prog or Symphonic Rock Playlist and I was blown away with the song then and thanks to your reaction to the song in this video, You've gave me a new appreciation of the song and I can't anyone else reacting to Edge Of The In Between without referring back to this reaction video right here and thanks again, Lex!! So, If you love this song then you'll for sure love Falling For Forever by Spock's Beard and that is a 20min. epic (in the studio) but worth the sit and just trust & believe me!! The lyrics & the music will touch your heart and you need to react to it for sure!! Thanks again for reacting to my request and hopefully I could have another song reacted to soon!! Sending you all love & prayers for good health and great rest of the weekend!! Can't wait to hear from you soon!!
    Thanks & Keep Rockin'!!,
    Walter - 🤘❤🙏🤘
P.S. FYI; Neal Morse wasn't on this song or the album. He may had left the band and Nick D'Virgilio was the main lead singer around this time!! P.S.S. It's Gill (like a fish has gills but no s) and thanks again, Lex!!!! -

When I saw you reviewed this song, I listened and subscribed immediately! I think the NDV iteration of the band is criminally overlooked, and this album is one of my favorites of SB. I think Nick is a superior vocalist to Neal Morse, though Morse is, indeed, a powerhouse writer/composer. My opinion is my own, of course, and mileage will vary... Welcome to my prog-review Playlist (I see you review many genres of music, so I'm glad about that, as well)!

This was a good choice, musically very good, it's just for me Neal Morse was the best Spock's Beard singer.
Others already wrote that Neal Morse wasn't with the band anymore after 2002, so here is Nick D'Virgilio singing ... and drumming 🤘
And I want to say, that of all the bands Neal Morse was/is part of Transatlantic is my favourite, followed and lately overtaken (at least with the latest studio release, but not live) by Neal Morse Band. Spock's Beard is only my #3 in this ranking, but overall better than many other prog bands

The symphonic sections in this song remind me of THE ENID. Why oh why is nobody requesting The Enid? They literally are the original progenitors of Symphonic Progressive Classical Rock from 1976-Present. I know you guys would love their music if you were exposed to it.

Nick seemed to do everything from vocals, guitar, keyboard and drums (for a couple songs).Should check out 'From the Darkness' or 'The Man behind the curtain' from this album. All Right! This album was crowd funded. There is a song on this album, The Names Escape Me, in which all the contributors are named/sung. The song is about a dystopian future where a prisoner is forced to name his co-conspirators. What a great song/album! My fav track on X is Jaws of Heaven. Thanks for this request, Walter.

So we at MrWondrous have ruminated on an issue your raise, and want to suggest a solution, or soulution, if you will. The solution will enhance your choreographical chops while allowing the music to be a positive addition to life, rather than a partial negative detraction therefrom. Simply free yourselves from the wires, use wireless earpods, and do interpretive low-impact dance to the music. In no time, you'll be the healthiest music reaction couple in all the universe. When, to help a friend, I played piano and percussion for a university ballet class, often the teach would have them simply dance to whatever music I created. Good fun, and good health, and it helps you feel the music and embody it.
Just as the river joins the ocean, and the germ in the seed grows, we've finally been free to get back home. Supper's Ready AND Close to the Edge! Wondrous climaxes. Have y'all seen "Cinema Paradiso"? Visual analog to those high endings.
Thanks for the SB. A new ride for me.

Neal Morse left Spock’s Beard in 2000 if my memory is good. Portnoy never played for Spock’s Beard. And Neal Morse is not softer than Spock’s Beard, not at all. Same style in general, and when he formed The Neal Morse Band, it is now a lot heavier than Spock’s Beard.

Didn't mean it as a diss. Thought it was funny how Nick's era as bandleader is sort of glossed over, even though it was about a decade long.
Even many long-term fans of the band ignore this era (which is a shame; there's good stuff there).

    • @mvunit3

@@NicknLex Yeah . . . I don't think Chris meant this as an insult/diss guys. Its just that Nick D'Virgilio had been the drummer since the Beard's beginnings, and many forget that when Neal Morse left ("Snow" from 2000 was his last album), Nick became Vocalist/Drummer of the band for 4 albums - that's where "The Guy gets no respect" comes from :p Not directly AT you guys. I think (hope) most folks _know_ you guys are just getting to know SO many bands, its hard to keep up with all the factoids and trivia . . . That is why WE are here to help 😊. Guitarist Alan Morse on stage is awesome, and again, he uses NO pick, and Ryo Okumoto is like Keith Emerson on the keys, and "ON" the keys! One of us will have to get you a live DVD :). Its awesome you guys are doing the DEEP dive into Spock's!
Edit: Yes, Spock's Beard may be at times "Heavy" Progressive Rock, but always been known as a "Progressive Rock" band (maybe even a Neo-Progressive Rock). We're here to help!
