Hi Royal Opera House. I think it'd be really wonderful if you invited the staff of Freed of London to a free ballet performance at Covent Garden to watch their craft come to life on the dancers! I'm sure they would very much appreciate it. Beautiful video
I was reading a book that said is you are strong enough Pointe shoes don't hurt at all. I laughed and put a sticky note over that paragraph and said "lies". Pointe takes a lot of hard work. Even though you may have really strong feet and are ready for it, it will hurt, not that much, but it will
+Adelaide Lazarski It really depends on the person, I know people who's hurting real bad after just a little while, and people who can dance for a ridiculously long amount of time and don't feel a thing. But yeah, generally it hurts at least a little
Adelaide Lazarski that's not completely true. My feet were very strong but my core wasn't so I had to do another year of pre-pointe. I was told by a teacher that my feet were very strong. My shoes do not hurt a lot but they do hurt.
Pointe shoes are a huge part of a dancer's life, and the maker/dancer relationship is possibly the most important one in the field! What a fascinating look into a hidden aspect of ballet. It almost makes me miss being on pointe ... almost.
That is so cool! I love the idea of the relationship between maker and dancer, one of trust, that develops even though a dancer may never meet the maker of her shoes. There's nothing else like it!
That’s amazing. I’ve been a figure skater for over 20 years and since I was 14 I’ve had custom made figure skates made to my exact foot modifications. The company who I always bought from sold their business and no longer makes figure skates. It’s not easy trusting anyone else with specific requests and requirements.
This was just a taster. There is a much longer video that goes into more detail called "what's in a ballet shoe". It's probably one of the link videos :)
I completely agree with you... it's just the long hours, hardwork, dedication, etc. almost makes you think "Oh, this is harder than actually playing a sport"
Forget the dancers, I'm riveted by the shoe makers. I've always been fascinated by tradesmen, such skill and dedication. The ballerina and shoe maker, who else could so perfectly understand job the other?
They showed how they were made. They just didn't go into detail. I like detail. I wanted to watch this because I wanted to be able to watch a performance with the knowledge that their toes don't dramatically hurt. The shoes are hardened and then softened to the point where they are still hard without the shoe clunking around on the floor by means of a liquid they apply to the shoe, right?

sorry to disappoint you but I reckon it hurts like hell, at least when you're learning
Sorry to have to break it to you, but it REALLY hurts, especially when you are just starting out. Foot care is extremely important. Your feet bleed, you get blisters, you form bunions, and more. Ice is extremely important on top of other things. I saw one video where a dancer had a plastic garbage can she filled with ice and stuck her legs in every night. As for the shoe, every dancer has their own method of prepping the shoes. Some put shellac, some tear the satin of the toe, some tear out part of the shank, and others shave down the bottom. Some dancers do all or none of this. There are all kinds of things that they do. Not only that, but they all have their own way of sewing on the elastic and ribbon.
my current pointe shoes are Freeds! Its amazing to think that mine may have started all the way in that shop in London, and traveled all the way to florida! Incredible
There is so much competition in the dance world. Anyone who thinks it's not a sport and they aren't athletes has never taken a class, been at an audition, or watched a grand prix. Ballet is an art, of course, but also should be looked at with the same respect as a sport. They work twice as hard for a fraction of the pay and are still at risk of losing a career to age, weight (high or low), and injury.
I love my ballet pointe shoes! the first time can hurt or not , this depends in the person , I remenber that I was so excited , I didn't feel any kind of pain! When you are in stage dancing you feel that the pain is not important , you can do it because you love to !
Let's just all calm down and just say that ballet is an awesome thing do be able to do. And that we should enjoy the people who have time and effort to be able to do ballet! :D
i'm the same as you, but i bought myself a pair of ballet/ jazz shoes and train 2 hours a day from the internet, learn the basics first (positions, warm ups, turns, jumps etc.) it really works i'm hoping to one day get to pointe
Danuellia Quow I'm fourteen and I've been learning ballet for more then seven years Strong ankles are important when doing ballet on pointe. A beautiful ankle is an advantage but as long as you practice and build up your ankle, you can even surpass someone with beautiful ankles. According to my ballet teacher, learning to do ballet on pointe cannot be rushed. You might injure yourself if you rush, so going slow and steady is important. I just started to learn to do ballet on pointe a few months ago Good luck to you! ^¬^
I know Freed's system is unique to the company. I wish they would have shown a shoe being made from start to finish. I'm assuming the makers don't make the entire shoe as it looks like someone else is doing the final stitching to make it "pretty". I'd love to see more in-depth how the shoes are made!
Go for it! You really should. I started ballet at 13 and I probably won't be able to go on pointe until I'm in my 20s, but I'm still going to work towards it because i enjoy ballet.
Thanks for answering, i'm going to have my first class at 24 of september and well i had ballet for a lot of years, but i'm going to learn everything again and hope i can go on pointe in the near future i am so excited 😊😊😊😊
I'm 15 and I recently fell in love with ballet. I've done "sports" all my life, specifically softball and volleyball. Dance is difficult. Whoever says its not a sport needs to try ballet. And I'm not even on pointe.
wow you have your name on the shoes! it must feel so personal if you've been wearing the maker's shoes since the royal ballet school! sounds like such a dream
ballet is a sport because you have to put in a lot of effort and all your strength into dancing. you have to be at practice almost every day of the week and it is a lot of hard work especially on pointe. i should know because i am on pointe have been dancing for 8 years and am a senior where i dance.
Depending whether you are use to it or not. It takes A LOT of effort to make it up to pointe shoes because your toes might not be use to all the weight of your body. At first it will, but once you start getting use to it, it will be easier.
That's kind of beautiful, albeit, a little disappointing. I mean, I was curious about how the actual shoe itself is made, not how the dancers and shoe-makers communicate.
This was just a taster. There is a much longer video that goes into more detail called "what's in a ballet shoe". It's probably one of the link videos :)
Depending on the brand that you get. If you are looking into professional ballet, then yes, you may want to buy the more expensive once because USUALLY the expensive once are better. But if you're just doing it for hobby, I would suggest buying the cheaper once, still costs a lot but way less than the really good ballet shoes. I know this because I've looking into ballet as a hobby that I might want to do, so of course I want to know the shoes as well! :D
its not only athletic like a sport but you also have to be artistic which makes it a billion harder than just normal sports. its just sad that some people dont get ballet. and they think its just twirling around...... : (
Ballet is mostly art but it is a sport as well, we work hard and do a lot of exercise, you can't imagine how much our body hurts and how much we sweat after a class.
Millie Fox I actually hate shopping for pointe shoes online. To get the fit you really want, you need to be there in person. One time, I bought a pair on amazon, and I could hardly fit half of my foot in the shoe. I bought the right size and brand I always wear (Bloch Balance European 5 XXXX) and I got a size 2 X.
not at all. do it! its never too late to start. look up misty copeland...she started when she was like 13 (an age thats also been dubbed as "old" by dancers) and now shes with ABT! its a lot of hard work, but youll love it.
i totally agree with you!!! ballet is an art!! and if it was easy it would named football but it is not! and it wants really hard work!! keep calm and dance the most amazing dance in the world.....BALLET!!! :))
Accually now all forms of dance is concidered a sport because of how hard we have to work to acheive the quality of what we do. Ballet is more of an art yes, no doubting that. But it is a sport because of the difficulty.

I've all of a sudden become really interested in ballet and now i can't stop watching ballet videos.

Try it for yourself. Plenty of places for adult ballet, including the Silver Swans for over 50s.
Hi Royal Opera House. I think it'd be really wonderful if you invited the staff of Freed of London to a free ballet performance at Covent Garden to watch their craft come to life on the dancers! I'm sure they would very much appreciate it. Beautiful video
Tiara Junor Wonderful idea!
blck4jck yeah
I love that guy's voice and accent.
Oh my god me too
Proper East London boy. Good know people like the accent.
It’s so melodic
Me to it's so fairytale vibes
He's the Ollivander of pointe shoes.
exactly.
True.
True
+Hermione Granger so true , but if this ollivander , where is harry and the gang?
+Shimmer Gal at the barre in Hogsmeade
I love how they're still handmade even after all these years.
It's like Olivander's wand shop, but with ballet shoes...so intriguing.
Riiiiiight...........

Adelaide Lazarski
SO TRUE
I have pointes shoes and I'm like seven years old and my teacher said I m ready to have pointes shoes and I been in ballet class for nine years
In the very beginning:
"From my POINTE of view..." hehehe
Cate Heilmann AHAHA
Cate Heilmann BALLET PUN NUMBER #1
Without one of those puns the comment section would be *pointe-less* BAHAHAHA XD
Bella Rose haha.............
LOL
The shoemakers are artisans too.
Indeed, they are. I really hope they get payed enough!
Yes. No doubt about it. They were very dedicated same as the ballet dancers 👏
It's unbelievable how many times I've watched this. I am proud.
Pointe shoes are a huge part of a dancer's life, and the maker/dancer relationship is possibly the most important one in the field! What a fascinating look into a hidden aspect of ballet. It almost makes me miss being on pointe ... almost.

I hope this factory get some "court seats" every season as an appreciation token.
I would love to see more videos about how the shoes were made. That guy was clearly a master at his job, please make another video!
That’s amazing. I’ve been a figure skater for over 20 years and since I was 14 I’ve had custom made figure skates made to my exact foot modifications. The company who I always bought from sold their business and no longer makes figure skates. It’s not easy trusting anyone else with specific requests and requirements.
Why is it fascinating and relaxing to watch that guy work do a whole video of just him
Such a poetically inelegant process to make something so subtle and perfect
Am I the only one who was waiting to see and hear how the shoes are actually made, instead of who they're made for? No? Just me?....okay.
Me too
Nope, not just you :-)
This was just a taster. There is a much longer video that goes into more detail called "what's in a ballet shoe". It's probably one of the link videos :)

thanks
I completely agree with you... it's just the long hours, hardwork, dedication, etc. almost makes you think "Oh, this is harder than actually playing a sport"
incredible! Ballet is so graceful in it's own way, at the same time it is kind of like football, just as challenging, but incredibly graceful!
Have you seen our Ballet Glossary? Might be of use if you want to give ballet a go at home! We've collected them together in a playlist.
Ballerina's shopping for pointe shoes... I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for posting.
Forget the dancers, I'm riveted by the shoe makers. I've always been fascinated by tradesmen, such skill and dedication. The ballerina and shoe maker, who else could so perfectly understand job the other?
Fascinating little film, captures the craft and atmostphere really well.
this is so cool! can you imagine having shoes made specifically for your feet? that must be as close to pointe shoe heaven as you can get.
This was like the little precursor . They did put out a second one that goes into great detail about they way they're made
Gabriel Hackney to stop the noise pointe shoe dancers have to whack them on a hard floor!!
or break into them. also, they hurt a lot but it just depends on what padding you put in
Sorry to have to break it to you, but it REALLY hurts, especially when you are just starting out. Foot care is extremely important. Your feet bleed, you get blisters, you form bunions, and more. I just got my first pair of pointe shoes and I am so excited now
you are VERY right! Every word you said is TRUE! thank you for seeing the art of what we do!
This whole process is incredible.
Ballet shoe makers are hella talented as well. Bless them,
It's amazing to see how much work goes into making a single pair of pointe shoes! No wonder they're so expensive!
my current pointe shoes are Freeds! Its amazing to think that mine may have started all the way in that shop in London, and traveled all the way to florida! Incredible
so interesting. wish it had been longer

i’m currently making my own pointe shoes, and it’s taking me a long long time, i could never make 80 a day 😅 props to this guy!! ❤️
I love my ballet pointe shoes! the first time can hurt or not , this depends in the person , I remenber that I was so excited , I didn't feel any kind of pain! When you are in stage dancing you feel that the pain is not important , you can do it because you love to !

Is it just me or are Freed’s the prettiest
I wear Freed’s
I want to go there so bad...
I am getting ready to get my first pair of Pointe shoes! I hope I can get Freeds...
I got mine about a month ago I was soooo excited
+Georgina Adam im sixteen and starting my first ballet class in a few days, how long would it take for me to go on pointe?

im in love with the shoe maker guy his accent and his aura 😗
amazing process! i didn't know they were made handmade!
Me too! I'm starting pre pointe this year... :D
i'm 16 years old, and i had ballet for 8 years, i quit at 11 but never went on pointe shoes, its too late now to start it again?
If you want to try it again you should go back to it!
Ur NEVER to late to start! Some ppl star at the age of 20! If u like dancing then keep dancing dont stop
No my mum went back at 16 but then was in a crash and now can't lift her arms in to fifth so as long as that doesn't happen then your fine
Go for it! You really should. I started ballet at 13 and I probably won't be able to go on pointe until I'm in my 20s, but I'm still going to work towards it because i enjoy ballet.

Ballet dancers are so attractive.
Man, this guy has some serious skill in making toes shoes or point shoes as they seem to be called I always called them toe shoes.
I'm 15 and I recently fell in love with ballet. I've done "sports" all my life, specifically softball and volleyball. Dance is difficult. Whoever says its not a sport needs to try ballet. And I'm not even on pointe.

point shoes are tough on the feet, but soooooo lovely!
I can't wait to get my first pair of point shoes. Almost done pre-point yaaaaay
it is to you what you want it to be;want an art, it's magestic, want a sport, it's athletic
This is really interesting! Wish I kept doing ballet... :)
Ballet is a sport an an art. Balletdancers are both - athletes and artists!
its so mesmorising watching the man make the pointe shoe:)
His accent is terrific. (:
And Leanne is gorgeous.
I'm going on point soon
*pointe
That was fascinating. Thanks for posting.
I have balet shoes and i watched a ton of ballet shoes videos and my shoes look different
Like their are point shoes just are built differently
yea i would know too i'm in company at my studio and have been dancing for 12 years
They don't bother me! :) I've danced on them for a year.
I really want to know which maker has the cross symbol because they are the best fitting ones yet 😂😘
I love my pointe shoes!
That's kind of beautiful, albeit, a little disappointing. I mean, I was curious about how the actual shoe itself is made, not how the dancers and shoe-makers communicate.

I ordered my first pointes a few days ago! They'll come in 2 to 4 weeks! 😄
Did they come?
Bruna Mandu Yes, but something went wrong
Bruna Mandu I'll have to order again
I've been on pointe since I was 8
its not only athletic like a sport but you also have to be artistic which makes it a billion harder than just normal sports. its just sad that some people dont get ballet. and they think its just twirling around...... : (
Oh, would you all please stop arguing about if ballet is a sport or not! Wether it is or not, it's still the best flippin' thing in the entire world!
Ballet is mostly art but it is a sport as well, we work hard and do a lot of exercise, you can't imagine how much our body hurts and how much we sweat after a class.
Wow amazing another thing on my Christmas list they do them on eBay and I'm just on pointe so I'm dog getting some.

super cool video
I believe theres like a 20 minute or long documentary where this guy goes into detail of his job. It's a more interesting video.
my first pointe shoes were freeds
Sienna M my first pointe shoes is sansha recital
i wish i could still do pointe :(
I wish I could make my own pointe shoes😂
i totally agree with you!!! ballet is an art!! and if it was easy it would named football but it is not! and it wants really hard work!! keep calm and dance the most amazing dance in the world.....BALLET!!! :))
I want them so badly
Accually now all forms of dance is concidered a sport because of how hard we have to work to acheive the quality of what we do. Ballet is more of an art yes, no doubting that. But it is a sport because of the difficulty.
it's basically a torture device for feet but for a fine art
i can not wait till i am ready till i can go on pointe
Interesting !
Thanks
i did ballet when i was younger, i started when i was 4 and quit at age 10, i am 17 now and went back to ballet a couple months ago and i am doing ok, i think if you really like it you should go back, if i could do it so can you.
This video was made 8 years ago and yet your still looking through the comments
How did u know! 😂
That's so cool! :)
super cool video!
well....there are ballet competitions, but for the most part, ballet is an art, meant to be taken in in a performance rather than judged
through out 0:58 - 1:37 he looked like he was going in fast motion!
I love Leanne's laughter at 0:35 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I wanted really a Pointe Shoe
yes i agree its rather a preformance rather than judged but its a sport as well to be honest i preffer it as a preformance but most people dont understand that its a though sport.
that' lot of work
I couldn't really tell how they are made exactly. They just make them so fast.
I really want to go en pointe but I don't think I'm advanced enough. I practice everyday though! (Maybe soon😢)
I think you mean that it is a very very physically demanding art performance! :D Though it is interesting to point out that there are Artistic Gymnastics as well as Figure Skating (both resembles a lot in ballet in their artistic aspect) as parts of the OLYMPICS! I guess people need to understand that sport is very widely used term and doesn't necessarily mean brute-force football or something lol but for now let's just say that ballet is an art...
What I would give to have a personalized shoe and a single maker...
