Fascinating. Great to listen to the true accounts, and not 'propoganda'.
And to think it all started with accusing what he was taught of being "propaganda".
Thank you for telling this history of Rhodesia that deserves to be remembered! You are a treasure of Africa!
Treasure to you maybe but he's no African.
@@ayodejiolowokere1076 I kindly beg to differ from your opinion .....please make your positive contribution and we can form our own opinions of you if you wish. We are all humans and there is certainly no hatred or malice in this Gentlemans contributions......if you took the time to listen despite your disagreement then I respect you for that....take care and best wishes
@@karlrandall6346 form whatever opinion of me you wish. This guy is sympathetic to Rhodesia and likely wasn't even born in Africa, what more do you need to see a resident alien?
@@ayodejiolowokere1076 I think the prominent word you used is "likely" so you dont know?...just like me assuming you are Nigerian and calling you a Zimbabwean allien......one thing I am sure of is he loves being an African, loves living in Africa and has spent his life investing in Africa so I don't see a problem in him calling himself an African? If you can think of a Rhodesian as a small Zimbabwean tribe and that good and bad exists in everything then somewhere you can find progression in that I hope
@@karlrandall6346 Rhodesians can't be Africans. They would even refer to themselves as what they are, Europeans.
You're certainly entitled to your own opinion, though I wonder if it's your place to weigh in on this issue anymore than this non African resident of Southern Africa.
Wow! That was interesting and very well told. You are a great story teller and I wish I had you as a history teacher when I was a young boy at school in Rhodesia ;)
I began watching you to learn of the techniques of fighting the Bush wars. I have stayed for the storytelling and your infectious personality. Many thanks to you.
I don't think H.B.O will tell history like this.
I actually think there making a movie about the RLI not HBO but it looks like it will be like Gen Kill or Band of Brothers
5RR you are gifted story teller. Thank you always for these fascinating stories and historical facts. I hope one day you can write a book.
Underrated comment!
I love how level headed your explanation of events is. All of the actions taken by the factions and individuals are understandable and human, given the context as well as human nature. Nothing sounds sensational, unrealistic or outrageously unbelievable. You find yourself asking what you would have done in a similar situation, and that to me is good storytelling. Keep up the good work.
5RR, before I watch this I'd like to say Thank you. I know it's going to be good. You are one of very few voices I'd like to hear right now... and not only because of your amazing accent, but the words you say with it. Thank you for defending a cause I believe in deeply with your life. This is what men do, and you Sir are a man I'd gladly fight for and beside. Cheers
Exceptionally delivered account of the history of the country I grew up in. I thoroughly enjoy your recollections and stories about the history of Southern Africa.
I love seeing 5RR green in my suggested list. Never disappointed my dear sir. Thank you.
As always, Informative, Interesting & dauntlessly Rhodesian in the Telling.
Thankyou. Keep’em Coming, Please.
Remarkable memory you have Sir.
And as usual excellent in your storytelling.
As a young 24 year old enthralled by all war stories, I find yours are truly thorough and without bias even in the light that you served on one side.
Keep up the great work. Priceless archives are being created here.
You're becoming far too expert at this story telling malarkey Martin ;)
I was almost holding my breath. Anticipating the outcome of Rhodes' decision to go to war.
When instead, you left us hanging (if we chose) until the next instalment of your brilliantly
related history of Rhodesia. In the moment when the penny dropped, that that's what you
were doing, I chuckled out loud. A masterclass in building tension in a story, with huge subtlety.
So subtle in fact, that I didn't realise that I was almost sitting on the edge of my seat.
With skill like yours, I bet you were feared in the bush! ;) Huge thanks, Martin.
Please never stop posting. I always look forward to your videos.
I look foward to the next video.
Thank you
Thanks! I'm excited for the next one.
Martin great one. Coffee again soon
I could have listened more. Thank you.
God Bless you as well!
once again I know so much more about our history than ever before and the delivery style is just perfect. The ending reminded me a bit like the serials we used to see at the Saturday bioscope - always end on a cliffhanger.... Thanks Martin - great history telling: keep well.
What a clifhanger! Looking forward to the next one.
I like the way you cut through the shit of life, of history, of people, and of hard times any modern person would shirk, buckle, or simply not have the fortitude to endure... I like how you give it as it is, and as it was, for better or worse as viewed these days.
Sir you are a brilliant historian
Thank you for taking the time to make this video for us Five Romeo Romeo.
Always looking forward to these videos especially.
excellent
Greatly appreciated as always! Thank you so much sir.
A great story on a rainy afternoon! Thank you much.
Your description of early Rhodesian "farms" reminds me of a situation a few (long) years back. Seems their was a company advertising in the paper ranchland in Arizona in 1000 acre parcels at very attractive prices. I had a friend who actually went to see for himself. He reported that there was indeed 1000 acres in each parcel but unfortunately about half of that was damn near vertical on the side of a mountain. I suppose you would need cows with suction cup feet.
Oxford students should be listening to you.
Another excellent video. Made my Sunday afternoon
Hi 5RR a fascinating insight into Rhodesian history.
I can't help but say it, but the way you tell these stories is really impressive your a very good speaker. I hope everything is well for you and your family thanks for the videos.
Greetings from the U.S. Great video as always sir !
Thank you - informative and entertaining as always
By far the most riveting story yet, Martin.! I found myself glued to the computer screen, similar to the way I was as a teenager watching a good movie!
Thanks for the content 5RR. Going through old photos and found Vic Falls and hotel 1972. I will see about digitizing them. If so I will send them to you. Rhodesia wasn't just a war zone it was a paradise worth fighting for. Even found a Castle beer bottle and a 6oz coke bottle I kept from my stay. Now on my gun safe. Do they still produce that beer? Anyone?
They still produce Castle Lager in South Africa. And it's just as awful as it ever was.
@@wriggler6983 In 1972 I was 14 and not a beer snob...I now live in central Texas and really am a beer snob with all the yummy craft beer around. First ever pisser was at Victoria Falls drinking Castle Lager. Living your own truth is popular now so I'm going to to remember Castle as the best beer ever. At 14 it was.
The country _should_ be called Rhodesia since he paid for it. Thanks for the video!
I look forward to the next episode
Thanks so much Martin. Every one of your videos is like a Christmas present. They are ALL pure gems, Much love from the US 🇺🇸⚔️❤️
Once again you hit a Six. Great job 5 Romeo Romeo. There is so much about this history that I am learning. Thank you.
Oh man! I hope you are quick with the next episode! I am resisting the urge to look up what happened. As an American, I had to look up both of these regions on a map already. With no prior knowledge on the subject, I really appreciate when you tell the story and say certain parts were disputed. It really adds a great deal to the story as so many stories today are told in a Good vs Evil way of telling it where one side is always perfect and always at fault. Real life never has sides that are all good and all evil.
Fantastic video yet again, always look forward to every upload! Thank you, sir👍🏻
Thank you Martin ....they could never make a film that would pay justice to the way you put the past into words and the characters of the day as you describe them....take care...you just get better and better....who was the prominent Shona leader of the time ?
I'm really enjoying the upload schedule, your videos are the perfect way to finish out the weekend.
Don't do this to me! Rather record and post two episodes! LOL. Thank you, I'm looking forward to the follow-up.
Thanks again
Never knew all this history but then I grew up in the Manicaland Province he speaks about and Matabeleland was far awy. There was an important street called Forbes Ave in Umtali (now Mutare) in Manicaland.
Absolutely fascinating. Thanks.
Good to hear from you again Mr. Martin! Just got your video, I'm traveling down the river and service is very bleak from time to time. Enjoyed as always and look forward to hearing from you again soon. Take care my friend, and cheers!!
Thank you again for the great content
be careful and stay safe in South Africa during these troubling and dangerous times
Wow....
So interesting - an incredible talent ! Thank you, looking forward to our next instalment !
Another great history lesson that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to - Thank you. 👍 I just hope you don't make us wait too long for the next instalment. 😄
Keep safe down in the Cape, keep sane and keep posting such great content. 👍
So well told , thank you great to hear history told in such a way.
Cheers and God Bless you as well.
Lovely story telling!
You got me into this story now you leave me hanging. I want to hear the rest of your story. Love listening to you.
You guys know what was used for lighting in Zimbabwe before candles.
Electricity.
Glad to be early on here for a change. Stay safe
So we'll presented, enjoyable and enlightening - so well balanced. What a History Teacher !!
I’ve really enjoyed listening to you tell the story & history of early Rhodesia well done my friend
This is a great series. Thank you for sharing.
Another great video Martin, thank you. Excellent storytelling.
a very interesting and pleasant video to watch
Great narration, really interesting & delivered in classic old school understatement 👍
My week just got a whole lot better. Thanks for the vids
I wish a channel like this existed about the Comanche, Iroquois, Sioux or Apache. I read recently that the last free Apache group was killed and captured in Mexico in 1946. I love learning about cultural differences and what happens when it goes bad
Excellently presented history lesson. Standing by for more.
Good story teller, know to stop on high point to make you want to listen more.
Thanks for your history stories 5RR, all the best 😃
Ive been saving and waiting for this. Always great to hear you sir! Thank you for sharing.
Pioneers world wide were tough as hell,I’m ready to find out what happens to ole lobangula
He died of smallpox after the invaders defeated him following the course of the Matabele War.
Marvellous! If black reparations are so important, what about white reparations for bringing a land into the modern world?
Were they asked to do so?
@@ayodejiolowokere1076 No, they could have remained in a brutal, war ravaged iron age society with little idea of justice, progress and enlightenment. Some would say that's exactly what some African countries have returned to.
@@ric6383 how stupid. Little idea of justice? This is why nobody wanted Rhodesians or colonizers and still don't.
@@ayodejiolowokere1076 Of course, present day Africa is just over-brimming with enlightened justice.
@@ric6383 and America with complete morons from what I see.
Very interesting! Thank you!
I think it would be prudent if we.....retook Rhodesia.......
Excellent. Can't wait to hear the next episode ;)
Love the history lesson. God bless
Terrific cliff hanger! A 'punch up' between Portuguese students and the Rhodesian armed forces? I don't know anything about 5RR etc but I've met the occasional Portuguese student. I wouldn't fancy it. Please drop in the occasional date; it makes events easier to cross-reference eg what's going on in Britain at the time. Incidentally, rule of thumb: if it's post early 18th century it's Britain as a political entity, not England. Also, you've got a great line in shirts!
Hello from Canada.
The bravest of the brave could never match the maxim gun
Yaaay!
I enjoy hearing about this history of southern Africa.
I love your channel, thank you so much!
Since finding your channel, I've found myself at different times with opposing viewpoints. With what's going on in my country you might understand that. Rights for all peoples. At all times I've found your knowledge of Rhodesia though to be quite exquisite. This chapter in your story exemplifies that. Goodonya.
History with respect without politics
Brilliant as always mate!
Looking forward to the next one.
Good to see Africans make the jump. That takes courage and self confidence. I say welcome!
Cant wait for the next one!
god bless you sir these videos are absolutely amazing! im wondering if a ''images of war'' episode would be something possilbe in the future, those videos were legendary.
Bon Monsieur, perhaps a book on your Rhodesian life experiences?
Appreciate your work...You should actually use that green screen sometime- maybe maps, images, etc.
Buck DeVries lost his son to a crocodile in Matabeleland near Gwaai
"One big stride", I see what you did there!
Great history lesson about the early days of Rhodesia .. Thanks I have learned a lot .. Amazing how hard a life the early settlers had and they could build a great Country .. Maybe the white settlers in Africa had it the hardest with the violence and Sickness they had to contend with.
they must of had a hard time robbing and pillaging. colonising must of been really difficult for them with all the resistance they met FOH
👋🏻
Guns are beautiful things for equality.
Spoiler alert: "Whatever happens, we have got, the Maxim gun, and they have not."
Sir you keep mentioning 'the company' was it jowesh company?
its really a shame the events of 1999, together Zim would have continued to grow ....
