Make a fist, and measure the circumference of the underside of your fist. That's a quarter of your stomach's (volume?...not sure how to say it in English), give or take.
You'd digest better, sleep better, and save more money if you did the 3/4 full. Or just opt in for the quick fix to your short sighted mental issues and eat like a fatass. Your choice.
You stop at 3/4 and in 10-20 you are full there’s a delay between stomach and brain you have to let it catch up so stop before full and won’t over extent stomach
My dad never let us 8 kids ever go hungry. My parents went through the Great Depression. Rationing. My dad was an underground miner. He worked very hard.
@@melaninmonroe007they're relating to the joke ("i made a lot of money today"); it means their dad made a lot of money that it meant they never went to bed with empty stomachs. there are people who are struggling to make ends meet and don't have enough food to eat or can't afford it because their paycheck hasn't come in yet. some kids go to bed or to school hungry. i'm sure you know this.
I do too but I’ve had so much food insecurity in my life I just keep eating and then I feel sick. Im used to eating while I can. Trying to get a handle on it now lol.
I like eating but going to sleep with a full stomach is nearly impossible for me. I ate dinner at 6, 7 at the latest so i can go to sleep at 11 not feeling weighed down. If i have to eat dinner later than 7 i downsize the portion or else i won't be able to sleep until past midnight
I was taught this concept by a friend-who was born and raised in Japan and was ethnically Japanese. I am thankful for many things of that friendship, but what she taught to me as “hara hachi bu” was 80% full. It gives time for the brain and guts to communicate, but was actually derived from an ancient teaching. We met in 5th grade, and I carry many pieces of her wisdom in my heart every day.
It’s prevalent in Japan and in areas known as Blue Zones: areas of the world with a high population of people 100+ years old. It’s great advice and wisdom I learned getting my Gerontology degree and something I try to keep in mind. 🤓🙂
A nutritionist came to my workplace where we were trying (and failing) to diet. Never forget her advice. You mention “diet” and I am immediately hungry. She says, eat what you want to. You want ice cream sundae for lunch. Go ahead. How many days are you going to want ice cream. (Of course she didn’t know some of us!). The trick is. Stop when you StaRt to feel full. Food left on your plate? Leave it, you really like mashed potato? Leave it, have some tomorrow. Brought up to “clean your plate, children are starving in china? Ship it to them. Try it, it works. Not long what you Want is salads with your steak, soup and bread sticks, carrots for snack.
I like to keep a running stew that I can put leftovers in, if no one wants them. That way, nobody has to eat just to keep some food from getting wasted.
You don't even have to do that. Gas will expand your stomach from digestion and cause you to feel more and more full as it expands your stomach. Eat a nutritional meal with the calories and protein needed for you to gain or lose weight, and be careful not to expand your stomach with fluid intake and gasses from digestion. The rest is just managing how big your stomach is currently and managing how acidic your stomach acid is by feel, since those will absolutely let you know if theres an issue
very true, as a kid I was super restricted on food, used to binge sweet things when I gained some independence, now I barely ever crave sweet things and my favourite snack is cucumber and hummus. happened naturally, didn't have to force myself to like it.
I once followed a weight loss program where the creator of it described it as eating "polite." In other words, eat the amount you would eat if you were invited to a stranger's home for dinner. You eat enough to be polite - to let them know you enjoyed their food - but you don't stuff yourself as you would at home, or even at a friend's house.
Eating until 3/4 full probably isn’t a bad idea especially when you eat fast because it takes the brain a little while to catch up to feel satiated. But going to bed hungry is a no-no for me! 😂 I can’t sleep peacefully if I’m hungry because I’ll be thinking about the next morning’s breakfast all night! 🤤
Grew up poor. Went in my first diet at 11. Found this advice in a book. From this practise i learnt that i ate when i was sad. Tapped into my sadness and dealt with it. Eating issues disappeared. Sadness disappeared. I never ate until i was full. I never had to loosen my belt.
@alclay8689 U can never tell ppl they r wrong if they do not know. Anything we do 3 times becomes a habit, which makes us forget who we were within 30 days of doing it daily. As a disability advocate, I know the epidemic we r in and the rise of fear. It is all learnt, yet we keep it and add to it. We feed it thru our addictions. Food is the worst. Out of the top 10 fetishes, food is 60%. I think #2 is about 13%. There r many factors supporting 3/4 full eating habits. Damage to memory is the biggest. Eating and thinking? Where is the oxygenated blood going to go. Exercise and eating? Same. Oh yeah, we have lots of brain cells. We could kill some of those. Then we turned 40 and had to turn back for our car keys drive, and we forgot to pick them up from the counter where we saw them as we passed them. We then blame these things on old age. Nope. Just a sign of bad childhood practices catching up with us. I grew up saying, "Put up or shut up." I can not anymore. So, if u ask me the reasons y we fail in life (88% right now). I would say 60% is nutrition.
I have the opposite problem, where I starved myself when I was sad. Learning how to eat has been a lifelong journey for me. I still struggle with depression. Life has so many variables, and we all get different ones and handle them differently. I'm so glad you found something that worked for you and your pain.
@delfyinc This I know all of my life. Every answer u need is within u. I mean, we walk thru the traumas. In reconstructing small ones, I have found answers before the issue became grooved. Someone told me that once you breathe in and out slowly at the end of your meal, that’s your body telling you that you’re finished. She said that we all do this every time we eat a meal.
Nah, it's a delayed reaction with the signals that send the feeling of full. So when you feel about 80% full, you're actually 100% full. The feeling of it just hasn't caught up yet. So if u just want a lil while, you'll realize that you're actually full. But if u keep eating til u feel full, then you'll end up over stuffed. It's why ppl often want a second helping, but end up not eating it, or all of it, cause fullness caught up.
