This one of the few movie scenes that always move me to tears. I think that Kiefer's emotions in that scene are real: he told in an interview that, as a kid, he was embarassed by having an unconventional father. Later, he was ashamed by the fact that he didn't know then how great an actor his father was. I think those are real tears because his character's story is in, to a certain degree, his own.
One of my all time favorite songs and movie scenes from all time.............my oldest son is a Navy Chief, I'm so proud of him.......but I guarantee we have given him moral conumdrum's over the years ;-) Peace and love forever.
It’s sometimes painful looking at old photo albums of us as small children with our parents. I had to move some boxes for my mom last year and came across pics of me as a toddler in my dad’s arms him hugging and kissing me. I remembered my dad being tough on me being the eldest son and felt neglected and him ashamed of me. Seeing these pics I went to my mom who was in the kitchen baking. She looked at me and knew something was wrong and that’s when I fell apart in her arms. I wish I knew about my dad before he passed a few years ago.
Watching my own life as a lifer hippie chick raised by unconventional parents (especially my Mom.) She made fringed leather vests with beadwork (we all wore them), did macrame, ceramics, gardening, artwork, & was such a kind & beautiful soul. This scene never fails to move me to tears....and yeah, I can truly relate to the bit about attending public school where everything was so different, the kids, the values, beliefs, etc... We went on the road, often, growing up. I saw my first Grateful Dead show as a toddler, and continued to follow the Dead until Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. I loved attending U.C. Santa Cruz, studying psychology, and am proud to be a banana slug!! My partner and I spent many years living in a communal environment in Santa Cruz, California...and it was pure bliss. We had this amazing 1969 VW Bus...all beautifully hand painted by a large group of us as we were living this amazing free spirited life. That bus took us to numerous shows, protests, demonstrations, camping & road trips. Our only child was born in 1995, and is named No'e River (second name choice was River Free.) He was also raised in an unconventional and hippie life, and looked so much like the kid in this movie clip!! We had him educated using both Montessori and Waldorf methods. Today, he is a full time college student, a free thinker, a free spirit, a kind heart & soul, very much against greed, corruption, war, & hate. Us hippies are still alive & thriving even though the 1960's are long past!! {{ R.I.P. Dennis Hopper }} Aloha, Peace, Harmony, Happiness, Bliss, Zen, & Light!!! xoxo
There is quite a few of us old hippies around Austin. We used to hitchhike all over the western US staying in communes in New Mexico and California along the way. Never a better time to be young than the 60s and early 70s.
I've seen this movie like 31 years ago and I guess I was too young to get the whole "GOs nostalgia" vibe but before rewatching it for the first time today, I tried to recollect the few memories left from the film apart the little twist at the end, and one image that has struck with me all these years was the sight of Kiefer Sutherland crying while watching his childhood home videos, truly a powerful scene that can resonate with anyone.
Dang spot in this movie gets me every time. I love the preponderance of it that spans the ages. There is no burden lifted, such as the one from your soul when you accept your flaws as your innocence. When you decide to dare and be as in chilhood dreams. When you know what to revolutionize, what to accept, and what to join, to be the positively influential wise old self you yet are. To lift that self judgement that tells you your imperfections are not that which makes you individual. Therefore beautiful. Therefore perfect. 11 …….
I too cry with this... it's more or less how me and the love of my life used to live, and how we raised our first kid, Frodo. I love this movie! Thanks
I love the set and scene in the childhood film where they are all sitting around the picnic table in the wood. The song, "Coming Back To Me" goes perfectly with it too.
Speaking from experience as a child you idolize your parents when you become a teenager in the young adult you resent your parents but when you get a chance to look back you wind up understanding them a little bit then you realize there wasn't all bad that that you were happy and they were happy at least at certain points then you may be start thinking was that too hard on them
The song they play when watchin the movie is awesome. Ive wondered what it was for more than 30 years now. Maybe knockin on heaven door but it sounds different. Paul gilbert ought to play that on his guitar. He did Wash me clean and it is beautiful
I'm crying I miss my birth father so much heaven fell down and hell froze over god bless ps nag champagne Sacajawea gold dollar coins piggy banks 4soda& chile supper in a can & pop
@@Rubyslipperspetconcierge I think it's a Bob Dylan song. If you listen real close you can faintly hear a voice that sounds like Dylan's but I've yet to be able to find the actual song so I'm not positive. If you find anything out about it I would love to know myself. I've been trying to find out what it is for years.
This is a wonderful film. An important film. Cherish and learn from one another. Teach peace. End hate. Free.
Kiefer looks so lovely when he is smiling and crying...

This movie was basically the Humboldt County theme movie, in the 80s.
