I’m Dutch and I’ve never heard of that head of the household rule, I use whatever I need to eat, I can decide for myself if I eat soup with a spoon or steak with knife and fork😂🤦♂️
that alarm you hear is not specifically for the dijken. It´s an alarm we used in world war 2 for the planes. And now you can hear them every first Monday of a new month so they know if the sound is still good.
Waiting to start eating until the one at the head of the table says, "smakelijk eten", and using the cutlery they are using...?? That is really, really old-fashioned! :-)
Every 1st Monday of the month at noon the air raid sirens will be tested, nowadays accompanied by a text message to all phones having installed the appropriate app. The sirens nowadays have become general alarm sirens, including warning for the threat of flooding. The text message informs people about the type of alarm that is sounding and instructions about how to act.
I think the thing about 'wait for the head of the house to give the okay to eat' only goes for religious families because I'm Dutch and I've never even heard of that
I'm dutch myself, and I've got to say, at the end of the video, when he speaks dutch, it's almost perfect dutch! I could understand every dutch word he said, even if the pronounciation wasn't completely accurate. Good job! And thanks for the compliment about the houses and the streets and bikes, "fairy tale", I loved it!👍
Koningsdag comes all the way back from Queen Wilhelmina, her birthday was 31 augustus, and it was a celebration up to 1948. Then: Queen Juliana rose to power, and her birthday: 30 april, was the next 'queensday': Koninginnedag. Then, when queen Beatrix rose to power, she remained celebrating queensday on 30 april, because her birthday of 31 januari was in the middle of winter, and that would dampen the fun. We used to be pretty religious, so if 30 april was on a sunday, queensday would be moved one day, before 1980 it would be postponed to 1 may after 1980 it would be one day sooner, on the saturday. When King William-Alexander rose to power, he decided to have Kingsday on his actual birthday: 27 april. If its on a sunday we will do it a day early now.
Every first monday of the month, the alarms go off... I get that it would be scary for people from other countries, but its basically just a test to see if the alarms work!
Few mistakes: Testing the alarms is definetely not because we need them for the 'dijken'. Just for every disaster that could happen. Koningsdag is the Kings Birthday, so April 27th, no matter what day, except when it is on a sunday, then it will be shifted 1 day.
What about the blue and pink sprinkles they put on cookies when a baby is born. And the cookie tin they offer guests. Take only one! And the birthday calendar in the bathroom.
Funny video. Tuff job to visit the Dutch and talk about religion. You probably got the same treatment as those Jehova witnesses. 😁 But hey, that's how we role! ☺️
Those poles under the city off Amsterdam are not just for Amsterdam! They are used in the whole off the Netherlands and in many other countries!!You just cant put a building on sand or clay and expect to keep the building up right!!On the whole earth!Except maybe on a rocky surface.
Lol I think it's funny that woman behind the wheel is blood on the wall. I have way more dangerous experiences with young men behind the wheel in a dark car hahaha

I have the feeling that This video is only being watched by Dutch people
Ik hou ervan als een amerikaan zich realiseert dat nederland meer is dan klompen tulpen en fietsen
“Country wide garage sale”. Best description ever.

“Wat in de wereld” is geen Nederlandse uitdrukking
Koningsdag is kingsday. It is called like that becauce we cellebrate the Kings birthday on 27 off april.
I hope the people don’t wait for me to say “eet smakelijk “ because they die of hunger.
I think the thing about 'wait for the head of the house to give the okay to eat' only goes for religious families because I'm Dutch and I've never even heard of that

Every first Monday of the month, alarms are going off as an test. Koningsdag is always on April 27th. Birthday of the King.
The head of the household rule is a bit old fashioned and I think more done in fanatic religiouse groups. Less in non religious groups.
Koningsdag comes all the way back from Queen Wilhelmina, her birthday was 31 augustus, and it was a celebration up to 1948. Then: Queen Juliana rose to power, and her birthday: 30 april, was the next 'queensday': Koninginnedag. Basic explaination of stamppot: mashed potatos and any food u cab find in the house
I hope you dont wake up from the alarm bc it usually in the afternoon lol
I have to disagree about the pointing at someone wearing a helmet when cycling. Yes it isnt common but we dont ridicule those who do.

The monthly tested alarms are air raid alarms or for use in case of an airborne chemical disaster.
What about the blue and pink sprinkles they put on cookies when a baby is born. And the cookie tin they offer guests. Take only one! And the birthday calendar in the bathroom.
