- I found a game called Astral Abyssal and it's basically Iron Lung but in space, and it's absolutely terrifying.
All the stars are gone, and your mission is to explore deep space for the new stars. Take control of a pilot in an observation spaceship called the Orbiter. Players get to perform various tasks on the ship. Explore and document new data. Let's play Astral Abyssal!

I like to imagine the idea of some colossal space monster that consumes other stars and solar systems like a black hole, while creating the image of fake stars to lure in others like an angler fish
that actually makes a bunch of sense. The idea that there's something big enough in space (besides Black Holes) to eat stars is terrifying , especially since there are many stars which are trillions of times bigger than ours
There is a manga about that from Junji Itou, "Hellstar Remina" IIRC

If you are looking for something to take a look at after you finish with this one, why not take a look at a game called 'The Final Station', a game where you are a train conductor who has been given a mission to deliver vital cargo and rescue survivors as an unknown enemy begins an assault upon the world. I am terrible at describing the game, but I have been loving it so far and I think you would like it as well.

The isolation is really a cool feeling for me.
It reminds me of movies like Moon, where there's just one character basically totally alone.
It's a DIFFERENT kind of isolation than say Alien Isolation, because in that you're actively being hunted by something you know about - we all know about the aliens capabilities and what it looks like, but in stuff like this it doesn't give you that clear picture of what exactly it is that we are supposed to be afraid of - i think that creates the cosmic horror dissonance that authors like HP Lovecraft rely on. The lack of description or simply, the overwhelmingly inability to describe it at all, is existentially terrifying.
I think a good genre name for this is “solitary explorer”
Or vehicle horror
or Deprivation Discovery, similar to deprivation chambers that block out senses.

What I love about these games is the paranoia you feel when playing, you always have that sense of "I feel like there is something in here but I don't know where" and IGP makes that so clear with his constant "Hello?" and checking to see if anything is on board after doing tasks.

I remember reading a thread of nearly blind/impared vision gamers back in the PS2-era of the internet. They were talking about certain games they liked due to good audio design and bright colors. (in my memory, I mostly remember them talking about Klax. Because each piece made a separate/unique sound as it fell. They also really liked Pokemon because there was a bump noise that told them they hit a wall)
Be kinda cool if these Radar Horror games could drop the visual entirely. Give us audio only horror. One step closer to the sensor deprivation horror nightmare of my dreams.

I like this term for it, you have my vote
anomalous navigation, because your navigating in an area or scenario that can be classified as an anomaly. Space without stars and a giant star eating monster, ya thats an anomaly. A planet full of blood with i giant fish chasing you is an anomaly. Then the navigation is from having your senses impaired in some way forcing you to have a handicapped navigation. So in short your navigating a place and scenario that deviates from the normal or whats expected.

If youre looking for a similar experience to this game and iron lung, try Scavenger SV-4 it's an amazing game about exploring a radioactive planet using a rover. It has 24 endings and so far ive had a lot of fun with it!

I like the mechanics so much that I wouldn't mind seeing this claustrophobic vehicle genre expand beyond horror. I can see myself exploring alien worlds from inside a mobile base that I had to operate manually like this.
that sounds like barotrauma, its a underwater game set under europa, which has no sunlight so you have to use sonar, but sonar may also attract "unwanted visitors"
This game was scary but iron lung still traumatises me to this day

Personally, I find space terrifying as well. We have utterly zero idea what is out there and it's highly possible we're not the only beings in the universe.

I wonder if there is more to the game, or it's just that short? Trying to figure out if there is a story like you experimented on the star fish thing, and angered a parent? I was super curious what was in the ship at the end lol. I wish companies would make full games like this, love the exploring/confusion vibe, like old sci-fi movies.

Ah yes, cosmic horror. Nothing else except deep sea horror makes me feel so tiny and vulnerable.
I'm not sure if Indie does his own editing, or who his editor is, or perhaps if he gives direction to the editor. But I love, absolutely adore the atention to detail, and the dramatic effects. The little echoes, the flash of important words over the screen, the music all works to make the video feel like a cinematic experience. I can really see the effort and the skill that goes into this, and I just wanted to point it out (in case the editor happens to scroll through comments).
I enjoy IGP's yo-yo commitment in games like this. "I don't want to go down there" he goes down there and immediately turns around "can I go back?". Rational response is a game designer's nightmare lol (Should call this genre "Dead man walking")

Probably this sort of genre could be called 'confinement horror' or something. You essentially are alone in a confined space with some unknown task.

Not so fun fact though; astronomers use a technique called sonification- where data is converted into sound to allow it to be interpreted. So while they don't hear the sound directly, they can use things like a Geiger counter to measure radiation levels and portray the results has audio.
Have you listened to the video about what a black hole sounds like? It's so creepy but so cool. They kind of mention that 'no sound in space' is a misconception. There's a lot of pressure and hot gas near celestial bodies, which means sound waves can reverberate, but not indefinitely, if I'm understanding it correctly. But seriously, don't take my word for it, lol. I only took 2 astrophysics classes and my brain is a potato

Hey have you played outer wilds? It isn’t exactly a horror game… (most of the time) but it’s really unnerving in many parts. It also may give you some existential thoughts if you think about some of the concepts in the game.

Nice. Another game that can cause me to experience space madness and bouts of astrophobia. I usually play as an explorer in Elite Dangerous and a sudden attack of the heebiejeebies can strike me when I travel too near to a neutron star, black hole, hypergiant, or other spooky body. The thalassophobia that SubNautica and Iron Lung can cause is also pretty gnarly.

Takes place on a moon with a blood ocean but I believe the backstory for both games is similar. Both take place in a universe where the stars have disappeared (Though Iron Lung's universe also is missing inhabitable planets as well) and both task the protagonist with exploring somewhere unknown for information

all the unique sounds sound like that signal array game...i can only imagine just how layered all these sounds are. sound design is always so important and immersive.
Fun fact, the sound that is produced when the star turned into the black hole was a real black hole sound. The sound was turned to a frequency that we can hear; and was then tuned again by the person who made the game
There's definitely a unique intrigue to games like these! The only way I can really describe them is like... Indirect Exploration? There's a distance involved, a powerlessness from not being able to directly interact with the environment. Idk!
So,there are no more stars,they though that thing was a star,it was red so probably a red dwarf in their mind,but if all stars are gone,that also means white dwarf wich have a god damm long lifetime way longer than a red dwarf's resulting in the existence of a red star impossible,how tf did they got fooled this easily?(sorry for my absolute trash english grammar)
