I will never forgive them for making the new 1-series FWD. I used to have an M140i and that car was truly special, in large part because of it being a RWD hot hatchback, which is rare. And that's not even getting into how bad they messed up the styling and how much they've unrecognizably changed its side profile. Ugh

Maybe they got tired of earning money and wants to ruin the brand and rebuild it to get a challenge. Not, but seriously everyone would want a BMW as long as it has a decent design and interior. It should be impossible for them to fail
People who still have the mindset that a sedan is more premium or prestigious for whatever reason, those exist especially in the premium segment given those customers are typically older and from a business background.
It's unbelievable that things have gotten even worse compared to the previous model. The market for these cars is mainly Europe, especially Germany. Nobody wants a car that looks like Japanese models (no hate), but this has no BMW DNA at all. What does the design team do when they know that the last model wasn't popular either? Also, if you take a close look at the rear bumper you will notice two different shades of grey, which is horrible. In germany we say: Sie haben den Vogel abgeschossen.
Their models in the 60s (Bracq), 70s and 80s where their greatest era. Although I think the Bangle 5er was their finest saloon, still looks modern 20 years later.
My entry to BMW was to be a used E36 316i, my mother blocked it. Kids don't drive BMWs she said. Years later I got an E90 and then upgraded to an F10. I really love BMW but this year I got a Tesla. Either way there is only one 2 series that is a real BMW and that's not that one.
I feel like more designed and effort went into this interior than the new X3. I appreciate that this interior isn't hyper-minimalistic, and not covered with large swaths of cloth. It's also good to see the metal door handles remain.
How exactly does cheap black plastic around the windows make the car "sportier"? So far I have never walked towards my E90, looked at the chrome grill, chrome window trim and thought "oh if only there was more black plastic, it would be sooo much sportier..."
Thomas, I will be honest with you. I own and drive a G20 330i M sport and before this I had a F30 320d, so I love BMW . But these cars, especially on the outside look like something Kia or Hyundai would make. That's not a bad thing, but it's not BMW
About the Borusan Turkish Blue: It's just named after the company called "Borusan". Their racing team "Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport" worked with BMW to create that color and have been using it in the GT4 category since 2008. Borusan Automotive has also been BMW's main distributor in Turkey for almost 40 years now. I almost worked as a salesman at their main gallery in Istanbul.

This is begging for a Touring version. They could even keep the rear bumper given how low the trunk goes. It would be prettier and much more useful (it would compete with the active tourer, I know)
I had to laugh, when you slammed shut the doors and it sounded worse than the Renault 5 you tested a week or so ago. Your comments this time? Quite good, not the best (excuse being frameless windows). Then the size of the rear seat: I can squeeze into it, it works somehow..... Finally pricing: 40k to 50k Euro. No complaints at all. I think there is some double standards at play, subconsciously perhaps. We all now have to say that the gap between the two manufacturers is 'intent' and not 'capability', the French can easily match the BMW if it wants to, especially at the pricing points. Beware BMW.

Thomas, I think that AC control usability is not as important as all YT automotive journalists say. I have a BMW myself and that AC works so well that I may forget it. It is always set at automatic + 21° and it works incredibly well, all year long
Forged wheels are noticabley lighter than normal alloys, and as this is unsprung weight, it has great effect on the performance, so in a sense the fuel consumption. Someone should do the math if the reduced fuel consumption due to the less unsprung weight would offset the "recycled" alloys.
I bought the 2024 on your recommendation for my daughter. She absolutely loves hers car. These 2 series are so fun to drive. She has the M235. Thank you Thomas and Leah. You are the auto review power couple!

The 1 series lost design wise with the new generation. However the 2 series grand coupe won with the new design. Especially the rear end! That is absolutly an improvement. But two questions are left: 1) Can you get also chrome accents on the outside. For example for the kidnes and the side frames? 2) Can you also get a wood trim instead of the aluminium? Or maybe carbon fiber..

Is it a form of wokeism, that designers feel they have to avoid an exterior that could ever be construed as aggressive or exciting? It's notable that the interior is a good deal more convincing. You see the same in cars like the Nissan Ariya; an emphasis on interior plushness pushing aside any pretentions to sportiness. But it's upsetting for BMW to go down this path
Thank you for the usual informed detailed. It is a very good looking car both outside and in. If this were to be my last ICE before I go EV, I would disappointed with just four cylinders though that does not seem to have impacted badly on performance. For the sort of car I want the comparator would be the M version of the 1 series, and it is not obvious which to choose. Also there is quite a lot of both price and feature competition from the higher end of BMW’s sub brand Mini. This suggests BMW are doing a good job of segmenting the market as we all transition to EV. Contrast this to VW which has yet to get this all quite right.
Now 2-series is front wheel drive! I really hope that Neue Klasse -lineup is something nice, or I will abandon BMW for good. I used to love Bimmers and I have had many different models through 3 decades.

Way better than the original, which looked very odd from the rear. The shark nose looks good to me.

I think BMW is now playing a game called "who can make the ugliest car".
Somehow the 2 series is now one of the most conservative looking BMWs, aside from the FWD proportions.
Although the exterior design is hideous, the quality of the interior seems quite good for an entry level bmw, same as 1 series.
Forget about the 1,2,3 series name brand, call it the suppository because it looks like one. I will keep my driving my E39, thank you.
If anyone buys this, you need to reevaluate your life choices… maybe get to an opticians while you’re at it.

Is it a form of wokeism, that designers feel they have to avoid an exterior that could ever be construed as aggressive or exciting? It's notable that the interior is a good deal more convincing. You see the same in cars like the Nissan Ariya; an emphasis on interior plushness pushing aside any pretentions to sportiness. But it's upsetting for BMW to go down this path
BMW needs to sack their designers and whoever approved this.

It is a very good looking car both outside and in. If this were to be my last ICE before I go EV, I would disappointed with just four cylinders though that does not seem to have impacted badly on performance. For the sort of car I want the comparator would be the M version of the 1 series, and it is not obvious which to choose. Also there is quite a lot of both price and feature competition from the higher end of BMW’s sub brand Mini. This suggests BMW are doing a good job of segmenting the market as we all transition to EV. Contrast this to VW which has yet to get this all quite right.
In case even one unit is sold, I think BMW can open a bottle of champagne
