I stalked this Ruffed Grouse with my camera to capture his "drumming" display. The low WHUP-WHUP-WHUP sound of its wings beating the air is characteristic of the woods surrounding my cabin.

I have one out back of my house every summer and for the longest time I thought someone way up in the woods was trying to start a generator or something. Little did I know it was actually a little chicken sized bird trying to attract a date, LOL.
....and then you blasted it, and ate it, am I right?
Just heard this in the woods and was amazed at the performance. Nature is truly incredible.
true that!
The first time I heard this in the flesh, I swore to my co-worker it was a motor firing up, like a pump or such. He corrected me, but I was incredulous. The sound amplifies a little further away and carries well.
@@bobgillis1137 same for me but I heard them around our property for months
Seriously, not. What’s even better is feeling the sound waves hit your body, as they drum when nearby. Serenity.
It is Almighty Allah who made nature incredible. Perfections in nature cannot occur "accidentally" and "by themselves". Every detail of nature shows the perfect art, power and evidence of Almighty Allah. Praise be to Allah Almighty, the Lord of the Worlds!
My friends and I were trying so hard to figure out what that "low-dropped basketball" sound was and we found this. Thank you
Thanks for watching, Quinn!
For the last two years, we’ve thought it was the neighbors water pump!!!!!! Then my husband saw the grouse do his thing this morning!!!!!
Haha it’s true, it does sound like that!
I’d been going crazy thinking the same thing! Thank god ive finally got an answer. It sounded too electronic to be anything in nature. Well, natures surprised me again!
This is one of the scariest sounds of the wilderness. Countless heart attacks experienced stalking the woods and hearing one. Could be used in horror films.
why you so scared of random motors starting bro
@@slabbadanks5829 think it may have been those chainsaw movies 🤷🏻♂️
Just saw a post on reddit slc of someone hiking and being scared to death of a noise him and his wife felt. Overcame with dread they ran. Someone suggested a grouse and here I am. Crazy!
It could but you have to really be there to get the full effect of the sound
@@slabbadanks5829 bwahhahaha
I've been hearing this in the forest in back of my house for weeks and couldn't figure out what it was. Now I know. Thanks! Nice video.
thanks Sheila!
Took me 6 months, then I saw a sort of camouflaged chicken standing on a log at the same time as the mysterious sound. A bit of Googling helped me out.
Im in this boat as well! Thanks for this, haha👍
@@glxxyz camouflaged chicken.
Lmao
@@glxxyz "camouflaged chicken" LOL
I would so love to see this in slow motion to observe exactly what they're doing with their wings. It looks like it's alternating up and down. Thanks for the great video, Luke.
Thanks! Yes, I would love to capture that, first I'd need a camera with high framerate capabilities - one day!
Slow down the playback you’ll see it
Thats how I start my day, every day, have my own drumming log in the back.
buzzing from 4 espressos
kinda sounds like a motor starting
True! That's what I thought it was at first
From a great distance it is a very low frequency sound. Got them out in the back 40 here in Maine.
Fix Bayonets Same here! One specific spot on the mountain by my house in NY it would always happen... thought some loggers or campers were having generator trouble aha
Its a lawn mower
I've been out on backcountry trips where I repeatedly thought "who brought a generator this far out?"
So cool to hear that in the woods in the early spring. Ive actually hear it in November too . I`m like that bird is a little excited for spring to arrive. hehe
My parents lived in Bland Virginia and I’d spend a lot of time in the forest there looking for bones and exploring. I’d always hear this motor sound like a generator. I immediately thought it was someone’s cooking moonshine or meth in the woods. When I’d walk towards this motor sound there’s always be nothing there and it would stop. It was the strangest thing. This happened at least six times. So a few years later I get the idea to Google “strange motor sound in woods” and this bird called a grouse kept coming up so I RUclips searched it and that was the sound!!! I never would have thought it was a bird because the only thing it sounded like was man made in everything I knew about nature at the time. So fascinating and cool to have years long mystery final solved. And I learned I wasn’t crazy and the sound was very real. Lol
Yeah I thought the same for a while. Thanks for watching!
Wow this video is so satisfying
Imagine not knowing what that was camping in the middle of the night.
Back in the early `80s I went camping for weeks at a time in very remote areas and it took me a couple years to figure out what this sound was. It was loud, clear, and curious. I wouldn't say I was scared at all though.
HEY STUPID IDIOT, THEY DRUM AT DUSK AND DAWN, NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. OBVIOUS FAKE RUFFED GROUSE FAN, FUCK OUTTA HERE.
Yeah I thought it was a stuck quad 😂
@@neilweaver1113 Obviously your mom left the door unlocked to the basement, when she rolled over you fell off the bed? Get back into the basement Troll.
Right hahaga
It's a blessing to find something like this, thank you so so much for sharing it!! and it's a nice resolution, the place and bird looks beautiful even though it was short 💕🥺
Excellent video and really cool to hear the drumming. Definitely sounds like a motor starting!
Omfg this is what I’ve been hearing in the woods around me. Imagine being zooted off the pen thinking an atv was starting up but it’s just a lil grouse
Literally sounds just like my Polaris quad .. amazing 😅
Awesome video, absolutely in love with these chickens
I love these birds
Beautiful video. 🩷
Thank you for taking the time to share this.
Thanks Andrea!
I’ve been hearing this noise for months and thought it was my neighbour starting his vehicle! Now I know lol
Sounds like someone starting a lawn mower in the middle of the woods 😂😂😂
Amazing nice video. Beautiful bird, beautiful woods.
2gjlakle Thanks!
I tried figuring out what this sound was for YEARS. The video doesn't show it but you can hear the thump frik VERY far away. Can't even hear the feathers just the thump.
I learned about this only recently. I had heard the sound all my life as I live in mountainous western Oregon. I had been told as a teenager it was distant rabbits doing much the same thing. Turns out both are correct, but they don't sound the same lol.
So stunning
me in the forest when I hear this
YOOOO LET ME PLAY SOME PING PONG WITH Y'ALL
thank you so much, I thought someone was trying to start up our lawn mower in the middle of the night
This was really cool ! :)
So nice!
Excellent Capture! WOW.
Thanks!
Once in my life, 20 to 25 years ago, I heard and saw that from a grouse. I was in the highlands of West Virginia.
That is a very good grouse.
Very cool, ive always wondered what it looks like when they drum.
that bird is great
It makes me feel like there is a glitch in the matrix - that drumming sounds like me trying to start the mower. Those sneaky lawn mowers aren’t to be trusted
Awesome
Now I finally know who was driving an ATV around at 4am
I thought someone had a motor behind my house for years!
I was trying to figure out what that sound was in the UP. Thank you internet!
I've heard this all my life. I thought it was someone having trouble starting their lawnmower.
Just heard a few of these guys in the woods and had to come back here to confirm 🐓 🥁
One question are these things loud because I heard this and it scared the crap outta me and we had no idea what it was. Mistaken it as my heartbeat lol
Haha, if you’re close they can be decently loud!
Amazing, they’re also tasty.
So listen for an old lawn mower or tractor starting up where there shouldn't be one, got it 😂
cool
I can't believe it we got stranded after car got stuck 28km down a logging road and heard this and thought someone with a quad had broke down we were yelling for help at a bird yes a bird when we thought it was someone
My husband and I live in upstate New York. For year's we have been trying to figure out this sound. We thought something was wrong with the septic system or something. Finally, my father came here and we heard it and he told us what it was! 😂I feel so silly now!
Don't ever feel silly. I heard strange sounds I'd never heard before while hiking in the desert. I stopped, listened and slowly made my way around a few bushes to see two male jackrabbits in combat. I'd never heard anything like it. I can't even describe it. I felt privileged to get a glimpse of the behavior. I've never been anywhere that had grouse. So I wouldn't have known. But the sound of a rattlesnake, the hiss of a Gila Monster, the buzz of a bee hive on the move...those are the sounds I know.
I've always thought this was someone starting an engine.
A friend told me, that it was a bird. I am just here to confirm.
Heard one while walking and thought something was running at us from the woods, didn’t help that we just saw a giant grizzly either.
sounds like a teeny little motorbike revving up
Dropping the basketball
Nature's engine
So this is what I’m hearing everywhere in my forest
I used to think it was someone trying to start up a 4 wheeler or something haha
Sounds like my landrover on a cold day
What a bird
What a bird
Bruh...never knew what that thumping noise was
haha grouse go brrrrrr
when do they normally do this? spring? fall? all the time?
As far as I know, all spring and summer as they are looking to mate
I've heard this a lot in the dead of winter.
I usually hear it most after early spring when the frogs start singing again
i understand why people are scared of the sound it makes, it sounds like something is running at you
I wonder if you can mimic that sound to call them
Nice vido
Thanks! 😊
sounds like an engine revving up
Just found out I was stupid and thought someone was trying to start their 4 wheeler all weekend
The only harmless animal that will startle you when you’re walking in the woods when it flies away. They sound like a helicopter
sounds like an atv motor.
the muscles must be very powerfull i think the wings can create some amazing pain when you would be slapped
It's always a log it seems. I'm sure only for vantage point I would guess.
and better acoustics
I was camping and we heard this but we thought it was a generator trying to start
Well I went to Yosemite and I was face to face with a Doe and 3 Fawns
What bird call is 00:00-00:03?
Anyone get the Famous Grouse tune going in their head?
was that the fart? that was an old motor about to start
and farts in the time this name was given must have been something
…when the mower won’t turn over a couple of grouse take notice
location?
Near Lake Joseph, Ontario
You've just added a 🚁 noise
yes boo
🚁😂
MOTOR STARTING / HELICOPTER
❤ muffler chickens
Looks like a sound of a helicopter to me
TINY FEATHERED HARLEY DAVIDSON
sounds like a steel ball bouncing
Me and my dad went to go hunting today
You are asome
Ready for takeoff captain!
Last time I went hunting, in the middle of a forest I heard this, turn my safety off and hold my gun military style ready to pop off, let's just say I got spook so bad I just went home never know what it is until I ask a friend, I got roasted for being a pussy but honestly it was my first time hearing it
Sounds like a lawn mower
that's lunch
haha
bedug
Lawn mower
Ready for takeoff.
I shot a grouse with my Ak 47 with a hollow point round, it basically blew up, feathers and guts.
