The actual reason is also super cool. They remove an ice core, a big long tube of ice, so that they can study the layers of ice and the isotopes in them. Every year as the snow falls, a layer of ice is added, so these ice cores go back thousands upon thousands of years. Cosmic rays entering the earth's atmosphere differ, and this results in less or more of certain isotopes being trapped in the layers of ice. Scientists can measure the amount of certain isotopes and can use this to figure out the weather and temperature in any year. With this we can figure, for example, what the weather was like during the Roman Empire!

So if anyone wants to know, the reason this happens is that different wavelengths of sound (different pitches) travel at different speeds, especially through solids. Different pitches reach the surface at different times, creating those strange *peeuuw* sounds.

Doppler effect. The pitch of the sound changes initially and when the object hits the bottom, not only does the sound travel upwards but it also bounces off the surface of the tunnel creating that weird noise
