"Evolution" is just a name to denote Mitsubishi when they turn their regular models into sports cars...it's just an Evolution of a Lancer, by itself it barely has any DNA in them.
Here in Asia we had the 3 door Pajero Evolution. That monicker can be applied to anything that Mitsubishi throws at motorsports

I would argue that the new M2 has changed as well. Gone is the loved 7 speed dct transmission and in the process, it has gained weight (200kg nearly) and more power. The new M2 weighs almost as much as the new M4. And that's a bigger car.
