I have enjoyed espresso martinis made with vodka for years so I am going straight for the cognac. Mr. Black sounds perfect. I have a feeling this is going to be love at first sip. 😊
Out of all the cocktail channels on youtube you guys have without a doubt the best looking one. The lighting is really nice, graphics are cool (although some could stay up a tad longer), your set/bar is well laid out, your editing is totally on point (love the cutaways to tight shots). And of course the content is great. I work in production and find most channels horrible looking or just amateurish. Keep up the great work.
Ok I just made this. Fantastic. I’ve had espresso martinis before but they were made with kahlua, Mr. Black is a MASSIVE upgrade from that. I did add some fee brothers chocolate bitters, and that elevated the cocktail to a whole new level. I highly recommend trying that out.
Love Mr. Black! Discovered it in 2019 when I took a trip to Australia and saw it popping up in the States soon after. Been recommending it to every friend that enjoys a good espresso martini😁
The cognac is a welcome addition, I once had a similar drink with brandy in a Peruvian bar (it wasn’t called espresso martini). They used 2 shorts of pisco, 1 shot Mr Black, simple syrup, and a barspoon each of freshly pressed ginger juice and lime juice. They also stirred it rather than shaking. Let me tell you it was amazing. Happy weekend Anders
I'm a bar manager in downtown Chicago, we put 3 different espresso martinis on draught. Let me just say it was a pain in the ass to set up. But once you get it working and get it nice and foamy, it's a huge hit. We tried one with a Reposado and it's fantastic. Repo and coffee is actually a great flavour combination.
when I make my espresso martini at home, I like to add half an ounce of Cointreau triple sec to the mix. I feel the rich citrus flavor accents the coffee flavors well, and it gives the cocktail an overall sweet yet complex taste, kind of like that of a Terry's Chocolate Orange
A lot of European countries order espresso shot with cognac shot in the morning. I have no idea why I never put the two together as ingredients for this cocktail but this is genius. I can’t wait to try it.
Yep! I usually change the vodka for Kraken rum. But I came to this video just after trying my new bottle of Ratu (I had heard it's great with coffee) - delicious!!
Definitely trying the cognac version! Just ordered myself and my pops a bottle and cant wait for it to get here! Thanks for the hookup and keep doing what youre doing.
A great resource as always. I don't know how easy it'd be for you to source, but you might be interested in getting a bottle of Kavi, its a Canadian coffee infused whiskey, but the prep involves blending casks between ~10-18 years old, then re-racking that with high end cold brew, which is then rested for a couple years. Ends up just under 40% ABV, so I use it as the base in lieu of vodka altogether. for holidays, adding 6-8 mint leaves+ .5 creme de cocoa doesn't suck either.
Using what's in my shelf and substituted small batch bourbon - that adds good flavors too. Excited to try a splash of cointreau and cognac next time! With the addition of black walnut bitters.
This is most elegant channel, you also look at the camera and personal like just talking to us in the bar. Thank you for being honest also about the sponsor about the Mr. Black.
I usually make a version without the lemon. Last time I tried adding some cocoa bitters to it, and it gave it some interesting spicy flavour, with cinnamon notes. Worth the try.
I just made my first espresso martini a few weeks ago but I'm glad you pointed out that most coffee liquors are too sweet. That's the first thing I pulled out of drinking mine is that I wish it wasn't like drinking a sugary cold brew. I'll consider picking up Mr Black next time I'm shopping for alcohol
Anders - love your show. Great receipes with open-minded approach and great attitude. Have replaced the sugar syrup for maple syrup and orange peel instead of the lemon. Works a treat!
Hello, Anders. You and the lovely lady are simply lovable. I just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and have already probably watched 50 of your videos. I love your energy, and cheerfulness, and rituals (“It’s Anders,” “to the bar,” “cheers”), and sense of humor. I also love the way you give the history of each drink. And the music. And the lighting and cinematography. Yours is a fantastic example of what a RUclips channel should look like in 2024. THANK YOU!
I am going to try the cognac variant! I use an Aeropress to make the coffee. I know it doesn't produce espresso (the pressure is way too low) but what comes out is a short, strong coffee with a creamy texture and it seems to me that the results are excellent.
Made the Morgenthaler cold brew concentrate for this. Just tried it with cognac and it was delicious. Thanks! I bet this would also work well with a good rum like an El Dorado or something.
Just found your channel. My new favorite. I'm an at-home hack cocktailer who really enjoys a night on the town with friends and a talented bartender. Making my way through your library to become less of a hack and start enjoying more cocktails at home. Thanks for your insight.
Thanks for the video and discount. I ordered two bottles today. I think my wife and I will love the Cognac version but we'll try both. We love your content, sir!
I am going for the cognac espresso martini right away, Anders! I am not a fan at all of a super sweet cocktail so I have never liked coffee liqueurs. But as soon as I tasted Mr. Black in Australia a few years ago, I loved it. I brought some back and I hope Mr. Black is available in Canada soon. I don't know why it isn't at this point. We want Mr. Black! The cognac is a fabulous idea to use in this cocktail. I am really looking forward to it. And I will absolutely give the vodka espresso martini another try. I don't drink them often but they are very enjoyable. When I was in Melbourne I got a huge sense of how much they love their coffee, as we do here in Vancouver - huge coffee friendly cities!! We take our coffee seriously! I can see how Mr. Black was developed in Australia. It makes sense given their love of coffee and the espresso martini. High end coffee and Mr. Black are literally part of the foodie/coffee/cocktail culture. They are adored in AUS!! Have a terrific weekend, Anders. Great video! I hope you are well! Cheers!
Thanks, Christine! Hope you can get your hands on some more Mr. Black soon. I think you'll love the espresso martini with the cognac! I haven't had the pleasure of visiting Australia yet, so I can't say I've experienced their love of coffee first hand, but after tasting Mr. Black I can tell they know good coffee! Have a great weekend with something fun to sip on! Cheers!
As someone who lives in a small Chicago apartment, and doesn't have room for an espresso machine, i found a great hack. There is something called an aeropress that makes Expresso strength coffee, and while it's not espresso since it's not pressurized to 8 - 10 bars, its still definitely a strong rich flavor that works perfectly well in a cocktail. It's a cheap, effective, and small footprint way to get "espresso" for my cocktails :)
I actually like to make it with white rum! For example Diplomatico Planas , gives it a smooth almost milky feel to it! Maybe some chocolate bitters but i will definitely use the lemon zest next time.
In case anyone is sorting by 'most recent'. Just tried this both ways. Both are great. And then I tried it with bourbon and that was outstanding. Also, ran out of demerara after a few so subbed in maple syrup and that is also amazing in this.
Hi, your tip with cognac is the best way to create a perfect espresso martini 👍 I'm Pole but don't like vodka, so any option for switching vodka for something else is a most interesting to me. Thx for this film
Love the channel and enjoying working my way through the recipes. We always have our espresso martini with rum rather than vodka, especially diplomatico reserva from Venezuela. Lovely
Just stumbled across your channel about a week ago and can’t get enough…love the content, editing, personality, “sips, tips and recipes.” Keep it up!! And thanks so much.
Amazing video. Just started to delve into the wonders of cocktail making. Have tried a couple of espresso martinis but just tried this version with Mr Black and it was great. Will definitely be checking out some of your other videos for cocktail ideas
Yesss.....this one has it all! Great video, great story, great cocktails I will have to try out! Ever tried a rum or whisky(e)y as the other spirit? Thanks Anders!
What also works really well with the second version is using caramel syrup or even salted caramel instead of the Demerara syrup, adds even more depth and who doesn’t love caramel and coffee as a combination 🤤
It looks very good. Maybe rum or whisk(e)y would be good too (such an Irish coffee upgrade, hehe). I will definitely have to try this, I have some homemade coffee liqueur. Thank you for your videos, very informative and entertaining. Cheers!

I picked up a Mr. Black about three years ago and have been experimenting with everything I had on hand with middling results. These “martinis” are the perfect marriage. Many thanks, and have you heard this one? In Ancient Rome, a patron asked for a martinus. The bartender asked, “Don’t you mean a martini?” to which the patron replied, “If I wanted a double I would have asked for one!” Cheers.
Nice one Anders. Previously ive made a version of this using a smoked rum, and it was awesome. Well worth a shake, if you ever happen to have a suitable bottle behind the bar.
Another great video ad description! tastes delicious, but despite shaking the heck out of it and doubles straining, i did not get that lovely looking foam on the top. Any ideas anyone? By the way, I agree with you on the Cognac version, but both are delicious!
I also add, a bar I used to work at made one with a splash of bailey’s in and garnished with hot chocolate powder set alight over the glass. Lovely little comfort drink and a nice spectacle
I've just found your channel and I have to say I'm usually a neat whiskey kind of guy but I went out and bought the ingredients in this just to try it and I loved it keep up the great work
Just made my 1st espresso martini based on your recipe. Used mr black, 2:1 syrup and remy martin accord royal as well as an espresso from my quickmill carola. it was delicious!
The cognac version was an absolute hit after dinner tonight, Merry Christmas 🎄!! . Thank you for the fantastic creation . We enjoy your RUclipss very much. They make me miss bartending. Was tons of fun and kept me alive in college.
I really love this cocktail, I'll have to try the cognac version. I don't know what it is maybe the oils from the espresso but it has a really great mouth feel when drinking it.
FABULOUS Anders!!!! Did the original but had no lemons so substituted an orange peel. Came across great as sort of an orange chocolate truffle candy but coffee. Anyways LOVED IT!!!
Being Gin enthusiast, I strongly suggest third variant - why, with Gin of course! 😄 I do not like Vodka based cocktails (even though I live in Russia 😆) and Cognac (second favourite spirit in Russia) cocktails are usually too sweet to my taste. And Gin combined with coffee sweetness adds a steely cold finish, which I loved from the first taste!
Made this tonight with a few drops of lemon juice as I don't have a lemon on hand and instant espresso/coffee again quick and on hand, my hubs really likes it. So did I. Oh and we used cognac. I'll make it again when I have fresh stuff because I bet it would be better.
These have been pretty popular lately in Denver, I don't know about anywhere else. I order them and have been meaning to look up a recipe, so this is kismet! Thanks!
After watching your video, Anders, I made the espresso martini for my dinner guests this evening (vodka and Mr Black). So good-was a hit with everyone!
Could you substitute the coffee beans with some powder, like (sweet?) cocoa powder or coffee powder? In case someone doesn't like chewing on the beans. Love the channel!

I have enjoyed espresso martinis made with vodka for years so I am going straight for the cognac. Mr. Black sounds perfect. I have a feeling this is going to be love at first sip. 😊
I like either an aged or smoked grappa in place of the vodka/cognac. ½ a pinch of sea salt as well.
What’s your take on using a nitro cartridge instead of double straining? Never seen it done, but I’m curious after watching this video.
finally a personalized code for me
I need to stop. I have been watching bartender videos on RUclips nonstop for days. I have cut off contact. Please help me please help me.
You will get through it, I was in your shoes last year. Stay consistent

I can help you ..to know about bartending

So I LOVE this drink. Pairs well with pumpkin cheese cake.
I make mine with spiced rum. Banging combination.
At this point you should make a phone app with all recipes you know so we have your versions at one place :D honestly yours are by far the best!!!
I love how you give history behind the drinks, you're amazing. 👏👏👏👏

Woah that sounds incredible, what bar was this?
Wow, what a combo! I'm going to have to give that a shot. Thanks, David! Happy Friday!
Loved Anders Erickson explaining the history and stories of cocktails

the difference using Mr black and kahlua in this drink really is night and day. Fabulous cocktail

I just tried this cocktail with Cognac and loved it!!! Great video, as always!!!

I really love the tip of the lemon oils. Appreciated.
Coffee is my favorite drink!!! Its so interesting recipes and I hope to make it so soon)) THANKS a lot)
Just made this after trying it at a bar yesterday for the first time used the absolute vanilla was a nice addition to the flavour
Using what's in my shelf and substituted small batch bourbon - that adds good flavors too. Excited to try a splash of cointreau and cognac next time! With the addition of black walnut bitters.
I read your comment and decided to try the black walnut bitters in my espresso martini, it truly gave it a new depth!!!

favorite cocktail hands down
Cheers again Anders, substituted the simple syrup and normal vodka for salted Carmel vodka and it worked a treat.
In case anyone is sorting by 'most recent'. Just tried this both ways. Both are great. And then I tried it with bourbon and that was outstanding. Also, ran out of demerara after a few so subbed in maple syrup and that is also amazing in this.

Great recipes, I make mine with Rum or, on occasion, Kraken Spiced Rum. Delicious.
My favorite youtube channel by a mile. Thanks for all of your videos and suggestions! you guys are the best at what you do.

Don't just watch 'some' of Anders' videos, watch them all. So fun and interesting! Have a great day.
At the bar I work at we also put a shot of frangellico in and my God its an amazing touch
Adding cognac, in my mind, takes the cocktail in the direction of a sweeter, less bitter Guinness. I love it!
Thank you Anders!! I followed your recipe making espresso martini with vsop. Fabulous! I love the lemon peel oil. So fresh !!
I usually put a tiny bit of salt (no more then 50 grains of fine salt) in there, adds so much flavour too :)
It looks very good. Maybe rum or whisk(e)y would be good too (such an Irish coffee upgrade, hehe). I will definitely have to try this, I have some homemade coffee liqueur. Thank you for your videos, very informative and entertaining. Cheers!
Really nice for winter season
Good job mr anders!
I watched your video and decided to repeat the recipe.
Unfortunately, I found only vodka and replaced espresso with vodka, Russian standard for Putinka, and lemon for sauerkraut.
What can I say, the cocktail is great. I like it.
From Russia with Love!
Those Espresso Martinis look tasty AS! We will be sipping the Anders' riff this weekend 🙌
Cheers!
Mine was just delivered! I can't wait to try a cold brew old fashioned!
Love to see you team up with James Hoffmann for a special on this cocktail. So many options! 🍸
Great to see an Aussie picking up the tab …finally!
😂 From my experience Aussies are on top of it - Cheers to you, Tim!
Thanks for your channel. You are both a pleasure to watch. As I am new to cocktails, it has been a sensational resource. Dumb question from a rookie …… Is getting a nice foam on the top of the cocktail as simple as just shaking hard or is there something I am missing? Had a few goes but the foam layer does not have the depth of yours.
I shake mine longer to make it foamy. Also make sure to add a lot of ice! The friction with the ice moving it what causes it to foam so nicely 😊
I just decided to make these yesterday and looked for your video on it and suddenly it’s here!
Anders, you have nice sense of humor and good taste for beauty.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Anders, thx for film. I love any recipes where I can exchange vodka for cognac, your recipe is perfect👍
I usually swap out the rum for an aged dark rum like 8 years plus. Highly recommended. The caramel notes in the rum really pair well with coffee - not dissimilar to the cognac approach.
Sounds & Looks fantastic I would definitely go for the Cognac Variation 👌
Mr Black is now my favorite liqueur! so happy to have found it and now i need to try your version of the drink.
Thank you. I Have an espresso every weekend and never had a mr black. I`m trying this during XMAS. Thank you.
Anders, in Spain a hot coffee (or expresso) with Brandy (or Cognac) is called a "Carajillo". Usually drink when the weather is really cold. Cheers!
I love this drink with Mezcal instead of Vodka, but Cognac is really good as well you‘re right
I made the cognac version and loved it!
Nice one Anders. Previously ive made a version of this using a smoked rum, and it was awesome. Well worth a shake, if you ever happen to have a suitable bottle behind the bar.
i love seeing people's takes on this drink. seems like everyone builds it a little differently
And they're all still so good!
Another great video ad description! tastes delicious, but despite shaking the heck out of it and doubles straining, i did not get that lovely looking foam on the top. Any ideas anyone? By the way, I agree with you on the Cognac version, but both are delicious!
Also very good with a dark rum.
I also add, a bar I used to work at made one with a splash of bailey’s in and garnished with hot chocolate powder set alight over the glass. Lovely little comfort drink and a nice spectacle
yeah same here:)) little bit of bailey's makes this thing great
I've just found your channel and I have to say I'm usually a neat whiskey kind of guy but I went out and bought the ingredients in this just to try it and I loved it keep up the great work
Just made my 1st espresso martini based on your recipe. Used mr black, 2:1 syrup and remy martin accord royal as well as an espresso from my quickmill carola. it was delicious!
Love this. Never thought to use Cognac. I think I'll be using that on the next one.
The cognac version was an absolute hit after dinner tonight, Merry Christmas 🎄!! . Thank you for the fantastic creation . We enjoy your RUclipss very much. They make me miss bartending. Was tons of fun and kept me alive in college.
Ps the Mr Black does it. Not a syrup coffee liqueur. It’s wonderful.
I do not like Vodka based cocktails (even though I live in Russia 😆) and Cognac (second favourite spirit in Russia) cocktails are usually too sweet to my taste.
And Gin combined with coffee sweetness adds a steely cold finish, which I loved from the first taste!
Sounds interesting. I would suspect that some find are better than others for this?
Ooooo!! Love the Cognac and lemontwist 👌👌 Gotta give that a try. Thanks guys!
It’s dangerous! Cheers Johan 👍
Made this tonight with a few drops of lemon juice as I don't have a lemon on hand and instant espresso/coffee again quick and on hand, my hubs really likes it. So did I. Oh and we used cognac. I'll make it again when I have fresh stuff because I bet it would be better.
Love the conhaque touch
These have been pretty popular lately in Denver, I don't know about anywhere else. I order them and have been meaning to look up a recipe, so this is kismet! Thanks!
Cheers, Roxann!
After watching your video, Anders, I made the espresso martini for my dinner guests this evening (vodka and Mr Black). So good-was a hit with everyone!
Mr. Black is the best!! Hello again from Wisconsin, Anders!
Hi neighbor!
I like to use disaronno instead of sugar in mine because I love the almond flavor
Could you substitute the coffee beans with some powder, like (sweet?) cocoa powder or coffee powder? In case someone doesn't like chewing on the beans. Love the channel!
Absolutely - the beans are traditional, but not crucial.
Love lemon in coffee cocktails. I also can't wait to try your way. How in the world haven't thought of that??? Oh ya, because Anders is a GENIUS!!
Hahaha it was only a matter of time before you did it too. Cheers, Carl!
