  • This was the runner up for Top 10 Tuesday last week and since it was so close, I figured why not make it this week. There are a ton of super powerful concentration based buff spells in D&D 5e, but what about the non-concentration ones? This is my list of my Top 10, and I think it's interesting to think about how you could, in theory, have all of these up at the same time. What's your favorite Non-Concentration Buff spell?

    Whoops, forgot about Armor of Agathys. It definitely would have edged out darkvision. Freedom of Movement and Death Ward also deserve a mention.

      Should definitely edge out more than just darkvision. It's Aid on steroids. The no save vs the damage plus upcasting ability almost breaks the debate.

      I think you could have had AoA instead of Fireshield cause its virtualy the same with longer time, less level requirement, flat damage, Temp HP and works against ALL melee attacks. At Spell-lvl 4 thats 20 Hp even if you get 1 damage. The material component you are guaranteed to get ...
      Even better is the Avalability with 1 level in Warlock OR magic initiate.
      Apart from that its a pretty good list.

    • @Daddylonglegs93
      @Daddylonglegs93 4 года назад

      MelVixen nah I strongly disagree. Fire shield doesn't disappear when you take 20 damage (assuming you cast AoA at the same level). Fire shield is likely to do significantly more damage than even a 9th level AoA over its durations. And you don't get resistance. I can see the argument against Aid (although one creature vs three is still a losing argument imo), but Fire Shield is definitely better and by a good margin.

      My Goliath Eldritch Knight/Warlock/War Wiz with elemental adept COLD: * *casts armour of agathys at 2nd lvl* *
      Battlemaster: that seems wasteful.

      It's also something of the warlocks sort of a class vision--I think they kept Darkvision as a spell from it because Darkvision is largely about being able to help more than just yourself, whereas they would like the warlocks power to feel more like it's selfish, but still just to be individual.

    A few things to keep in mind.
    - Contingency : you cannot Counterspell a contingent spell, as the spell has already been cast AND you are not seeing the person affected casting.
    - Heroes Feast : even though you have probably seen otherwise, RAW you cannot Dispel the effect of Heroes Feast on a creature, as the spell duration is instantaneous.
    - Foresight : just a friendly reminder that initiative and the rolls for spells such as Counterspell or Dispel Magic, are all Ability Checks.

    Contingency is an amazing spell especially when you go into multiclassing since it doesnt specify that the 5th level or lower had to be from your wizard spell list.. As an example if you were a bard wizard you could have a Contingencyfor dissonant whispers if a creature gets withing 5 foot of you, or as an example from one of my own characters a wizard cleric sets his to cast a 5th level cure wounds on himself if he falls below half hp.

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 4 года назад +1

      I'm not sure that casting Dissonant Whispers on yourself is that great of an idea. I'm not sure how the rules work for being frightened of yourself, and whether or not that lets you move. But that's only if you fail the saving throw. If you succeed the saving throw, that just means that you took half of 3D6 damage, but you don't actually get to run away. And since you're running away with your reaction, the enemy that just moved next to you would get an opportunity attack against you.

    Contingency paired with an upcast level 5 dispel magic set to trigger whenever a magical effect is placed on you that impedes you, that would negate any magical effect that does chip damage or prevents you from doing things so things like hold person, magical fear, slow, charm effects, magical sleep and all the others that I can't be bothered looking up to type out. Other than that at the DM's discretion you could use a scroll of cure wounds or death ward spending the item to channel into the contingency set to trigger on being knocked down to 0 hit points, basically making a single use auto-res, if you're going into a fight that you know is going to get very dangerous very fast you can protect one of the squishiest party members ahead of time so that the healer has a bit less damage control to handle when an area effect seriously hurts or downs multiple people, having the wizard hit 0 then immediately heal by potentially 5d8 + the modifier of the person that creates the scroll is pretty potent even ignoring the modifier that's averaging 20 hit points regained, having that on a wizard who can then pop back up and drop a haste on the healer when their turn comes back round could mean 3 people getting back up with the contingency then a heal spell and giving a potion from the healer, that could make the difference between a TPK and a success.

    I would say that the class that makes the most use out of darkvision is the Shadow Monk. They can cast it for just 2 ki points, and they get back all of their ki points on a short rest. So if they cast the spell right after a long rest, and then do a short rest and then go adventuring for the day, they still get dark vision for another 7 hours. They can do this short rest while the Cleric, Druid or Wizard is taking the time to change up their list of prepared spells for the day. And later in the day if they still have 2 ki points when the party is about to do a short rest, they can recast darkvision to reset the duration. This lets you do a Variant Human Shadow Monk, or a Ghostwise Halfing Shadow Monk and still get the darkvision that is essential to your playing style.

    I think that the coolest thing about Contingency is that it gets around the limitation on it being extremely difficult to cast two leveled spells during one turn. You can cast Contingency with Misty Step, and then trigger Misty Step during combat later on and still be able to cast a leveled spell with your action that turn, even though you just cast Misty Step.
    Another really cool thing about Contingency is that it can't be counterspelled. You're not actually casting the spell later on, it just takes effect. For that reason, the enemy can't counterspell you. If you really want to make sure that you can cast Dimension Door to escape, and you don't want the enemy to counterspell you, you can do it as a contingency ahead of time, and the enemy won't be able to counterspell your escape. Against some DMs this might be a much bigger deal than it is with other DMs.

    I don't know how you didn't mention it: Mage Armor.
    It's THE buff spell for wizards and all who can't use light armour, mage armour is better than light armour, it's better even than some medium armour as there's no dex limit and you're technically not wearing armour so you can benefit from things like bracers of defence. It's definitely worth a spell slot to activate it before each day of adventuring and you don't really have to spend a spell slot. Also consider giving it to your Dex-based fighter, they may have AC=12+Dex from studded leather, but 13+Dex is better unless they have magic +1 studded leather.
    Jump is a great buff spell for high strength allies, it is effectively a limited fly spell as a STR16 ally can make a standing jump of 24ft, Your 40ft movement speed barbarian can easily jump 30ft wide gaps between ships, platforms, across rivers and over difficult or dangerous terrain. And you can give longstrider. You may think these aren't worth a spell slot but a level 1 scroll costs only 25GP so definitely worth a scroll. Longstrider can also be a great scroll to give to the ally to generally grant more mobility in a fight and increase their permissible jump distance.
    It's always worth having a scroll of Disguise Self. You may not use it often enough to be worth preparing, but it's definitely worth 25GP, if you're cornered and about to be discovered make yourself appear like anyone else. It can be really useful in combat, run behind a building and disguise yourself as a guard, then run out from cover disguised as a guard.
    False Life is also a nice to have on a scroll as a little top-up of health. Use it as effective healing or a pre-fight top-up.

    High Level Fiend Warlocks are great because you can stack Fire Shield, Investiture of Flame and the Eldritch Invocation Cloak of Flies allowing you to passively deal 2d8 fire damage to a creature that hits you with a melee attack while also dealing 1d10 Fire damage and your charisma mod in Poison damage every turn. That doesn't even mention the immunity to one damage type and resistance to another.

    Totally agree on Mage Armor. I would like it a lot more if it was a ritual cast, but the fact that you have to spend 1-3 spell slots each day for a possible 18AC (and that assumes a Dex of 20) is just not great.
    You're better off taking 1 level of Fighter and taking a good medium armor and the Defensive fighting style: you'll get a lot more out of it by saving your spell slots and a spell choice each day from your spellbook.

    As someone that played a Divine Sorcerer: Aid is amazing and worth taking.
    Notably, it has a lot of use to a paladin casting it on their steed. But also, for full casters like sorcerer and cleric, it can be very useful as a general buff at higher levels.
    Since it targets 3 creatures, I've used it on a warlock familiar (an imp) to give it 20 extra hit points, and the two tank characters. And you can *still* cast it on other creatures, since there's nothing restricting multiple uses of it. Only that a single creature can't receive the benifits of the same continous spell at once.
    Also, it's incredibly reliable as a healing spell (I believe the life domain features work with it as well?) Because it heals for a realable amount, to multiple creatures. A 4th level aid can be as good a 3 2nd level cure wounds for 1 action, at a range of 30ft. Though only once per target. With the bonus feature of working on creatures that have had their hit point maximum reduced. Or if you're using it at the start of a fight, a high level casting can be very useful targeting npcs, who just might last longer thanks to the buff. (I've done as much, and cast mage armor on them. Commoners with 19hp and ac13 can often last long enough to escape!)

I have played several campaigns where a player used Aid very often. It is a spell that will consistently turn potentially risky combat encounters into victorious ones.

    Mirror Image's d20 roll is rolled before the attack roll is made but after the attack is declared. This means that if you have an AC of 16 but your images AC is 14 A hit of 15 will still hit your illusion if you roll high enough on the MI d20. Even though the attack would miss you if it was on target to hit you (very confusing terminology)

    With Temporary Hitpoints being a specific thing in the game I think it would be unnecessarily harsh to declare that someone loses 5 current hp when Aid's duration ends. The language should be adjusted for future print, but where else in D&D do you see players losing health as part of a spell's effect? Especially for Cleric/Paladin spells. I'd probably alter the spell language to read the same but cut out the current hitpoint language and insert it at the end, "When this spell is cast current HP is increased by the same amount as the increase to maximum HP."

    Non-detection, by raw, is a debuff that should be called "divination blindness"
    Because "target" " and "affect" aren't the same thing.
    Go to DND beyond, filter by school for divination magic, and count the divination spells that are a detriment to the person the spell TARGETS. You have true strike (which is really a detriment to the person who casts it) mind spike, hunters mark, and that's basically it. And almost every other divination spell in the game targets the person who benefits from the casting of the spell, or only targets willing creatures, which means someone affected by nondetection can not benefit from the casting of:
    Augury, Commune, Commune with Nature, Comprehend Language, Contact Other Plane, Detect Thoughts, Divination, Find the Path, Legend Lore, Locate Animals and Plants, Locate Creature, Locate Objects, Scrying, See Invisibility, Speak with Animals, Detect Evil and Good, Detect Magic, Detect Poison and Disease, Foresight, Guidance, True Seeing, Beast Bond, Beast Sense, Gift of Alacrity, Telepathic Bond, and Fortunes Favor.
    Identify and tongues depend on how they are used but you rarely don't want those spells to be cast on you. Find Trap, Arcane eye, and Clairvoyance are free to be used by people with nondetection. And that's all the divination spells in the game!
    The other line of nondetection, being unseen by scrying sensors, does protect the target from scrying, clairvoyance, and arcane eye. But those are the only scrying sensors, it does not protect you from find familiar beast bond or other cases of seeing through the senses of another creature, nor does it protect you from Locate Creature, detect magic or other extrasensory perceptions. The spell is still good, but only if you cast it on someone who doesn't have a spell arsenal with divination magic in it. And if you're ok with casting all your divination school buffs on someone else.
    Thank GODS nobody rules that way.

    Because the spell increases the maximum and the CURRENT target's hit points, it is considered a healing spell? Because if it is, it's a must go spell for Life Cleric, whose ability boosts healing spells.

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 4 года назад +1

      There's no sense in this. They would be still invisible to the enemy without dark vision. Darkness is considered a heavily obscured area, that blocks all vision, so they won't see Ranger in it. If the enemy has a dark vision, they will see in darkness, but they still won't see Ranger.

    • @jordanlindsey4299
      @jordanlindsey4299 4 года назад

      @@antongrigoryev6381 You're right, I forgot a heavily obscured area effectively makes creatures blinded. There really isn't a reason then to cast it on an unwilling creature, though I do think you should be able to cast it at a higher level to target more than one creature.

    I've got a weird pala 12 / divine sorc 4 hybrid (which I've played since lvl 1 btw) and I always start the dungeon by casting Aid at the highest spell slot, which is 5 right now. That's 20 HP to 3 people, effectively 60 HP, for most, if not whole, dungeon. And they can heal back up to it with hit dice as well. Pair it with THP from Hero's Feast and the bonus HP are through the roof. Super useful.
    Also, too bad sorcerer doesn't get Foresight... I would love to try to cheese the shit out of it with Twinned Spell 😂 imagine having that active on two members of the party at once "just" for 9 sorcery points

    • @btCharlie_
      @btCharlie_ 4 года назад

      @@jasonbolding3481 - the main reason for the sorc "dip" was our party didn't have a dedicated healer for a looong time and I served as both tank and healer in combat. I would've gone cleric, but my wisdom is nonexistent, plus it wouldn't fit my character.
      I usually don't have the action economy to cast Aid mid combat. I spend first one or two rounds catching up with everybody and buffing people with Bless or similar, and after that I get more value out of just trying to smite twice a turn, boring as it may sound.
      But tbh it never occurred to me that you can use Aid as a mass ress at just 2nd lvl spell slot... that's actually kinda powerful use of the spell, not nearly as powerful a ress as Mass Healing Word, but palas don't get that

    I don't really like Mage armor as well. Mostly due to it's "no armor" restriction. Yeah, I know It would make a hell of tanky buff it stacked with other armors. But Personally, it just a layer of energy over your body. What difference would it make what you are wearing in the first place? Now, if Mage armor had an added benefit like an enclosed environment protecting from drowning, poisons, and diseases clouds, a vacuum, heat and cold temperatures, lava, escape option from body entanglements and penetrations(ie: Naughty Tentacles.) Something that would make the spell worth a damn to take. Where cloak and ring of protection, displacement cloak, and many other items. That would outclass the spell in every way.

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 4 года назад +1

      "That would outclass the spell in every way."
      Except being better than any non-magical light armor. Which wizards don't have access to, by the way. So Mage Armor is the only way for them to permanently raise their AC, and it stacks with all magic items you mentioned. It also stacks with Braces of Defence, unlike normal armor. And wizards need AC because of their rather low hp pool.
      It's basically it - armor for wizards. And all. The only reason to not like this spell is because it's boring, but not because it's bad. 1 spell slot is not much, and wizards have enough spells prepared to take.
