One old castle trick is to have the wals extend forward of the gate on each side so you actually have to get all the way past the tower defenses before you can even reach a gate to attempt to break in. Gates are generally weaker than walls so making them into killing zones is a good way to protect them.
You know how i would build my base? it would be like attack on titan's world. Three walls, there will be no outlying towns though. Inbetween the outermost wall and the middle wall would be farms/trees, then inbetween the middle wall and the final wall (very center) would be the workers that go out to harvest the wood and food from the wall section before it, and the very center is my fully metal crib with multiple floors (if the game doesnt implement multiple floors, then it'll be just the ground floor) and all my homies are patrolling it on the inside and all 3 walls have guards on them. That would be my lit base. Thats also preservable. And if the devs turn off unlimited bullets, then ill just have all of them to get bows with arrows
Eventually after we rediscover many important technologies lost in the great infenction, then ill start finding oil and pump it. Then ill go and train a brigade of people (since were repopulating) to drive mad max cars with turrets and those spikes on the bumpers and what not

I have an upgrade idea for the spikes, like a barbed wire or something like that. Or they could make a "mixing" feature so you can mix separated entities into one. I.e. Spikes + wall = spiked wall.
I have a defence strategy (i haven't tried it but i think it sould work) place the trees around your base then once they have grown destroy them. It should leave the tree stumps which can not be passed when next to each other. Note: zombies might be able to walk passed tree stumps
I think there should be a day and night cycle and at night it's like hard mode because of vision. You'll need to find a flash light to explore and batteries but zombies will be more attracted to that if the light hits them. Also there should be some human settlements and raiders.
