It's amazing how back then they just operated completely under the assumption that video games were entirely the domain of kids and no one else. None of them, not the companies that made the games, not the media, not any of them, ever considered that adults would enjoy playing video games.
I still know plenty of people who still think that way.
Actually, early on in the golden age of arcades prior to the NES, video games were considered appealing to all ages, races and gender. It wasn't until the NES when it became a niche audience of preteen boys that liked video games. It took a while to move away from that notion.
I'd rather hear about Mario jumping on the falling thingies than hearing about what joe did to Jane. As a bus driver (which I am not), it would be a bit less unnerving to hear about how to get past level 2 than to hear a potentially dangerous story about two kids

Once, my mom got so upset with my brother over letting his grades slip that she literally smashed up his Sega Genesis with a hammer as punishment. That's way worse than being disassembled and hidden in a closet for a while. True story.
She seemed to have mellowed somewhat by the time I got my Playstation in '98, though. By then, her rule was no gaming Monday through Thursday unless it was an official school break, but Friday evening through Sunday until bedtime or on breaks? We could play as much as we wanted...But homework first. My sister and I had other hobbies beside gaming, though, and the lack of numbered hours didn't make things feel so restricted that we felt we had to try and squeeze in our allotted time each day. Some days, we would binge for up to 8 hours (especially if it was a really good game or one we just got), other days we might not touch a controller at all. Most days it was in between. Now THAT'S parenting!
