NICE question - the only one I remember recently in thousands of comments; here's the deal: one has TO CONSTANTLY, every instant, every moment, feel the rhythm within themselves; dance to it, MOVE your body (literally, dance, "bop" to the rhythm). The 'faces' however disturbing to some (aware of this) ARE a necessity for the playing guitarist; they simply show the inner timing, inner sound manifesting itself on the outside, as well playing it on the instrument. It's a whole, completely surrounding feeling that has to encompass the whole body and mind. It IS a big effort, but it is necessary in order to play in a way that will give you - instantly and constantly - the true satisfaction that I KNOW you have been looking for. That satisfaction in fact can (in my humble opinion) ONLY be found in timing, more than ANYTHING other technique. A musician's best secret and most precious skill is nothing else but their sense (and skill - to be developed) of timing. Merry Christmas, Fil!
I love how "Malcolm" is putting so much heart & soul into it - being simple & rock steady for 5 minutes straight takes a lot more effort than you'd think! Rest In Peace Malcom you are loved and missed! AC/DC FOREVER!!!
I am a cranky old Aussie dude who grew up with Bon Scott living around the corner. AC/DC were explosive before they became world famous and they only just played in local pubs. This is incredible and these guys are perfect. Trust me for an old Aussie to say this it means something. I still listen to them and I am covered in tattoos and ride a Harley and I am the grandfather you always feared. Rock on dude!
Powerage (my favorite album) really showed how good the band had become as the playing and Bon's lyrics were superb. It showed they were ready for the next level. Unfortunately Bon was not there to enjoy it.;(
I’ve noticed every single cover of AC/DC on RUclips never sounds like what they do live or on the records. I swear it’s a deep secret when it comes to tones with Malcolm and Angus. RIP Malcolm Young! Greatest rhythm guitarist of all time
Scotty one of the reasons why 'Classic AC/DC' was so good (still is in fact, because it's a *classic*) was their attention to perfection: their recording style and technique added to their talent is still unmatched. NO cover band has the talent nor knowledge (and commitment!) to get anywhere close, now or in the future. The amount of time and (once again) knowledge relative to such process is just unreplicable today, with few to no exceptions.
Maybe they could nail that sound if they focused more on the playing and forget about trying to act like Angus. The rythym player was working his ass off trying to move his mouth like Angus does when he’s playing. I don’t know why people think they have to act like Angus when playing his music. That’s just the way Angus reacts while playing. It’s not required to play AC DC songs😎
@@gwhiz3708 Are you playing Guitar? I do for about 30 years. And nearly every good Guitarist i've played with did some stupid looking moves and things with his eyes and his mouth. Including me. I didn't know that until i saw myself on video and was really suprised and a little bit scared 😅 It is like you re on a trip when you re grooving and moving right. This is not an Angus thing. And for the 2 guys in the video: perfect performance! Really really nice! ACDC brought me to music when i was a child. It is simple an clean. Everybody can learn the notes. But only a few hit the groove right, hit the tone right....sorry for the poor grammar, german english.....rock on
@@WiesnheimerBuckelfreund I looked up other videos of the lead guitarist and he only “reacted” that way on ac dc songs so that proves it’s a put on. I couldn’t find any other video’s of the rhythm player but I bet the same is true. I’m not trying to be down on those guys so I done my research first to prove my point. I’ve done this with other guitarist also and found the same to be true. Rock on, Stephanie 🤟
I agree! As much as I love the Stones, I’ve never been a fan of Keef’s lame-o “weaving” approach. Give me this distinct lead/rhythm arrangement any day, and leave the weaving for occasional use only.
I absolutely love the energy here. Its one thing to play the song well but its another to FEEL the music when your playing. Very well done performance.
Fil, I love your enthusiasm and devotion to AC/DC. Your quest to understand their tone is truly wonderful. I am really happy for you when you uncovered the secret of the Schaeffer (spelling?) and then had the ultimate compliment of giving Ang one of your replicas. Congratulations! I will always be eternally jealous of your collections of SGs, Firebirds and Marshalls!!! Great version of Gone Shootin’. You capture the “roll” so well that Mal always said was the key ingredient to their sound. That replica “Beast” is amazing! Well done, boys!!!
Thanks, really appreciate the comment. We'll probably go with an early to mid 70s Super Bass for the next recording as it's slightly cleaner, and perhaps think about a different speaker choice. Again, that's to add to the clarity/tightness of his sound. The SD50 is a very versatile amp though... clean to dirty, it's all there. edit: I can't spell...
Super bass is the way to go, allthough for the Power Age album a 2203 sounds perfect! It takes a lot of dialing in to make a 2203 really good for Malcolm tones but it kan be done :-D Great playing!
@@rev2203 totally totally played perfect of you both. one of the best acdc songs ever covered in the best way ever heard. simply great, i watch it over and over again....rock on!
Probably Angus' most economic solo (in terms of how much he is able to get out of using/reusing the same notes). My favorite solo on Powerage Very well played here. Nice playing all around.
OH. MY. GAWD!!! I met Angus and Malcolm, Bon, Phil & Cliff in 1979. Been my favorite band ever since. YOU BOYS NAILED THIS SONG!!!! My second fave song of AC/DC ever (Highway to Hell #1). Thank you!!!

Only the Young brothers could've done better than that! Really the perfect tribute to the genius of Malcom! The tone is really THAT tone! The feel and crescendo is really THAT! chapeau!
Some long time haters. It's always the same people who subscribed just to thumb me down - all good! And thanks so much for your appreciation - love, Fil
Little late commenting, but do you happen to remember what your settings are for Mal's sound on this? I'm so close with my own Gretsch, but I feel like I'm missing out on some sort of 'secret sauce' so-to-speak with the tone.
Jimmy: We are using the latest TSR here with the boost off, using only the optical limiter for a touch of compression. This was a bit of a work-around because we didn't have a 1992 Marshall Super Bass at the time of recording (it's here now) . I'm not sure where the settings ended up: naturally, it changes throughout the process. Where are you so far? Which amp are you using? Presence on these old (or old-style) amplifiers is a major part of dialling in the sound, and this sound especially - the amp 'volume' knob isn't everything. Of course we should mention there is numerous UAD plug-ins on top of this sound, but nothing earth-shattering or really that "magic". To my ears now, it has a bit too much 'grit' in the tone, but that's 50 watts for you. Not bad, though! We'll fix it. Cheers
rev2203 Thank you for the reply! I am actually using a JCM 900 that a friend sold to me. It’s surprisingly good for Malcom’s tone, albeit sometimes I find myself fiddling with every knob to try to get closer and sometimes even using an EQ which personally I’m not a fan of. Like you said, it’s an everyday hunt for the proper tone! Again, thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I’m definitely always on the lookout for a superbass as well, it’d be a dream to finally have one in my possession.
The Young brothers were such great song writers. Awesome cover off an awesome album. LTBR/Powerage/HTH AC/DC is untouchable. Always loved the break at 4:17. Classic AC/DC.
I just went back and forth between your track and the original studio cut. Tone wise, aside from the studio cut being a half step lower both guitar tones are dead on, great job! The guy on the SG did a fantastic job nailing down the Angus squeak and vibrato!
EFFIN EXCELLENT!!!!!! Love the early upward strokes of the rhythm in the start. It mimics Malcolm's uncharacteristic subtle stroke to ease the entrance into this song. Magnificent. Mal had less groove than chunky support in the rest of it. Just a note for authenticity. X
How do you keep the groove so tight?
