What got cut out was my plan for putting in a backyard basketball court and the upcoming video explaining that and thats about it. Hope you guys are staying safe out on site and staying hydrated and to all the bosses in the audience..taking an extra 15 break to cool down isnt going to affect your kids trust fund. Cheers

    You provide nostalgia. I did framing in the nineties. I wasn't very good but I did enjoy building houses. Stick built are my favorite.

    Thanks for sharing, I have a bell style roof to build with a very specific diameter for the curve which will determine the tangental length overall. i prefer using a mocked up protractor on site to trace the actual curve, rather than eye-balling it. Nice work though 👍

    I use a small strip of roof ply, I bend it then place it onto the marks then just tracing it it helps a lot

    Nice work and FYI those curves can be cut in full and nice by just setting the blade depth to just barely go through so you don't fight the whole blade. Got that from need of framing some round rooms and for round room wall plates you do it so the piece you cut off can be tacked to the other side so you have completely curved plates.

    Also you can get your 12 side degrees by connecting the pivot point across your common pitch to get the degree number then subtract 90, gives you your 12 side cut (or flat cut) great work

    When did you decide to be a framer or what part of construction did you get into first. I'm all over the place and can't decide on which way to take seriously.. it gets hard trying to learn framing/trim carpentry/ remodel etc at the same time

      As an Master Carpenter .. I highly recommend ALL .. Cross train yourself . The better you know frame will make you a better trim carpenter , Some will say . Framers should never do trim carpentry and I say . A framer should trim out his own work ..Many framers can slap something together quickly without considering or knowing how difficult they can make it for the next guy down the line . So when you trim , You'll know who to blame .. Yourself and think about what you did a few months ago in haste ..To me . Carpentry is like an encyclopeadia .. If you only learn from the " A " book . You'll know a lot about aardvarks and asteroids but nothing about beluga's . Remodeling teaches you about the how something was built back then . and how to make it look like it was made for today . The biggest thing to become a better all around carpenter is learn MATH .. You don't need to how to calculate the orbits of planets with calculus " But it does open the mind " . and you need a little bit better math than to figure your paycheck . Basic trigonometry and geometry !!! . Helps build that 3D mind . Also learn Code . So you know what you are doing is safe and correct . Like knowing in a joist hanger , That a thumbtack isn't sufficient .Learn a little basic engineering . Also assess what your goal are . To chase money and do slipshod / acceptable work. On the other side of the spectrum of woodwork so fine that it is approved by NASA .. There are different niches in carpentry . Timber , Form , Frame ,Cornice , Trim , and even finer niches .. Dabble in them all .. They are like a tapestry .. interwoven , . Always think and look for easier more efficient ways , Watch others and notice trends or how they approach a solution . Innovate and don't lets someone tell you there is only this way and this is how everyone does it . In my 40 years of the trade . I have done everything from the Slap-n-Run fast production work to work that you had to be sharp as a razor and the expectations were cleanliness and perfection . I am still learning . Now I work with a company of wizards that have R2-D2's with lasers and spectral scepters linked up with CAD files , Jobsite laptops linked up to 11 earth orbiting satellites . That you have to have GPS coordinates to locate a closet wall !! LOOLL .. And others where we have to input numbers back to the shop for a computer operated articulating bandsaw and router table , Just to prefab a tri-axial ellipsoid groin vault .. It's still carpentry !!.. Make my head hurt at times .. In the end , Be safe and carpentry can be fun . It can be grueling , hot , cold , wet , dangerous , frustrating . Like going to war ! . Another thing I have learned in life .. Anyone that ever went to Home Depot and bought a shiny new tool belt and built a picnic table for themselves .. Knows everything ! about carpentry !! LOL .. Many think it's a job for grunts and drop outs so we all have the IQ of pocket lint .

      I’m in school for carpentry and renovations right now and on a school work term doing home improvements. Try this field if you wanna learn everything… since I started a month ago I’ve done everything from framing and insulating, to sanding painting… window and door replacements, built a few decks and pergolas, added 2 roof sections tying into the other roof system (for over a newly built porch area and learned a shit ton.. If you’re interested do it! I couldn’t do SHIT all a year ago, but I said hey I’m 27 years old and I’m ready to start a family. I want to be a dad I could be proud of and have skills to pass down. And also it just rocks building stuff, especially when you get to do custom work!

      Same over here but I prefer trim and cabinetry. I used to do lock and key jobs with my family for a while and I prefer the work after the framing is built up. Framing is awesome looking before sheathing walls and roof. Something about it looks timeless and inspiring.

      Jigsaw takes too long . The Labor/Accuracy benefit isn't there . In fact on long arches . A skilsaw is not only faster but cuts cleaner . With a jigsaw to have to deal with keeping your eye on the work as you progress 1" every 10 seconds and can throw the cut out of square . A skilsaw blade will demand you stay on a path and won't allow much of a wander . Plus the blade sweeps the backside of the cut and makes a sweet cut verses a gnarly one .What he is doing fits the bill . The average curvature is fine . Granted it couldn't be used as fine finish and stained " Unless that's what the desired look is " .. Once sheathed and covered with either shingles or standing seam metal .. It works most effectively and will come out looking perfect . . I was scoffed at years ago after having curved timbers sent out by some Expert . I laughed at the cost and the accuracy . Some noodlehead laminated pieces together and cut the timber on a bandsaw . The builder asked me what I thought . I said garbage !!! .. "I can do better with a skilsaw " .. So.they tossed those abominations into the dumpster and bought all the rough sawn 10 x 18's for me . They were highly skeptical of me ..I laid out the arches with a template . and milled all the arches to S4S level finish and joined them with some Japanese joinery I know . With a skilsaw !! .. and a few chisels, beam saw and 20 grit grinder , eventually to a 120 grit sander . . Made a bucket of cash on it and the work showed up on their websites front page . .. Again .In his circumstance .. It's most efficient to do it that way .

    • @IVORY123100
      @IVORY123100 3 года назад +5

      You gotta believe you can !! .. It's not impossible . I basically built my own house in 1986 " It was my parents house " . I was young and already had 3 years of carpentry skill .. That skill pertained to knowing how to carry plywood all day and carry 2x4's to 3 screaming carpenters . Bang ,Bang Bang !! . . In my 3 prior years of my extensive carpentry training carrying lumber . I never had time to look at plans or withdraw my tape !! My name was Plywooooooooood !! .. An opportunity came up . Mom loved me and asked my father " I want our son to build our house " .. Dad was furious and always thought I was as dumb as a stalk of broccoli . .. I seized the day !! .. I said " I can do it !!" .. Sat down for 2 months and drafted all the plans . I studied my brains out .I did things I never imagined I could ever do . I never framed a hip roof , but I remembered watching out of the side of my eye those 3 years prior how Bang did it . I did things that to this day . I have never done again . I was given creative liberty by mom " Just do it " .. In the end standing in the back of their beloved house . I told my mother " I have no clue how I was able to build this " and she told me " You were given a gift .. Use it " .. I was given an opportunity and that is what everyone needs !! Opportunity !! .. There is a saying " If you believe you can , You can . If you believe you can't , You're probably right " .. Years later when my parents became elderly . When their time came to pass . They both died of cancer in 2007 and 2016 in their beloved house .. They wanted to pass there and not anywhere else . You can do it .. Just like all those mushy love songs . "Believe you can fly , Just gotta spread your wings and leap .

    I pissed off a builder years ago . It was a 2 car garage with a 3' wide hood about 30' long . I asked the homeowner " Do you want me to put a little frill on the overhang ?' .. I told him I can curve the top of the rafters real easy . and he smiled " Do it " .. That same day . My Eagle eye builder drove up and wanted me to run a mockup in front of him .. " Hmm try an 8/12 and let me see what it looks like ? .. Hmm .. Try a 6/12 and let me see what it looks like " and promptly drove off after he gave his blessings after utilizing his extensive knowledge of remodeling single wide trailers . After he took off .. I loaded all the little rafters on the sawhorses . With his relative chosen pitch. I super-imposed a slight bell curve . Took me 20 minutes blazing through the rafters .It came out beautiful and the hips were awesome .. That little frill .. Next day he came out and saw it .. I defied him !! . I told him the homeowner wanted it , I suggested it . He loved it but somehow thought I wasted time . Told him .. Take off 4 hours of my time if you'd like " .. It's never best to do an end around on a builders wishes . The homeowner was beaming !! and loved the subtle conflict . Loved It .. and me and my smart ass told the builder .. It has all the pitches on it " See .. at the top it's a 10/12 and the middle it's an 8/12 and the bottom it's a 6/12 !!" .. I covered all pitches dude !! .. He dared not fire me since the homeowner loved me and that I was the only one around of his carpenters that could figure out the rest of the house . Had'em by the balls .. Me no care ! . I eventually quit after building an addition on another house . The carpenters doing the remodeling on the interior were neurally deficient and it looked like a gaggle of baboons were learning how to frame . and my addition , Built like a Swiss watch was attached to their abomination . I couldn't have my work intersect with morons.. So I rode off to a local saloon.. Buh Bye !!
