As I approach my late 20s, I will never forget how amazing and massive this was in 2009, during my final years of secondary school. I am so nostalgic for it!
I already thought that "And I am a weapon of massive consumption/And it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function" was the cleverest couplet in the history of pop music and only today, almost a decade later, did I realize that the next line about looking at the sun and mirror isn't just metaphorical (which works fine) but is a reference to the tabloids. Bravo, Lily. Genuine brilliance.

I remember this song back in the day, but never realised just how interesting and well-written it is. Amazing Lily Allen could make a chart-topping song like this.
@@MichaelSuperbacker was thinking how it's exceptional to have a great pop song that's also brutally honest. There were other artists back then who achieved the same (Eminem, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse), 2000s pop music wasn't just sex and partying. To this day Lily Allen's tone is very unique.
There's quuuite a few singers now who keep their accent to varying degrees. She def was the one in the last decade that made it pretty much acceptable though not unless there is someone I forgot
I am a weapon of massive consumption, it's not my fault it's just how i'm programmed to function... Still the best part of the lyrics. Describes about 90% of the western human population.
Pretty sure it’s intended to be at least slightly tongue in cheek. Considering the fact that the artist is clearly impervious to these cultural influences yet she notices these bizarre traits in others.
+Holly Mackinnon (Mack) I'd heard of her, but never really listened until I decided to look her up after reading an article on Alfie. Her older stuff is great! This song is the one I get others started with ;)
OfficialVetox The Sun and The Mirror are newspapers in the UK that often talk about popular or celebrity culture, which is the subject of criticism in this song. My mind is still blown.
Are you stupid of course this is her accent when she sings and speaks.....(.but the point you're making is that she's from a posh background) So what? She's not always gonna speak like the queen of England. Plus she's not that posh nwayz. She's still a londoner most of us speak like her. I'm from west london so I should know.
The creative concepts behind all her music videos are so underrated. She’s such a genius when it comes to creating a mystical world that reflects her music.
@Grzegorz Brzeczyszczykiewicz my 16 year olds face lit up when l played this on my phone, l forgot how old this is and it makes my children think of when they were toddlers.....
Classic. I love how everything is colorful and posh throughout the song and the ending is only with a creepy grey mist covering the whole area. The song is so entertaining and looks like a bright-upbeat one, however it's a deceiving song as it feels in its lyrics, because it is very dark indeed.
This song is nice to listen at first, then you look to the lyrics and you'll get it. It is daunting how we are being bombarded with advertisements all the time, telling us to buy, media telling us what we should be paying attention to. Honestly, we're used to too much stimulation in our daily lives, that a short while on our own without internet has us bored. It's true for me, so I try to sit in silence often. It's calming.
Gambling adverts, erectile disfunction ads, gay couple having their car delivered, mixed race couples on every ad, Twitter tweeting and followers, wagon wheels and bounty decreasing in size, the list goes on
This song is so deep and the video makes it even better with those Alice in Wonderland vibes... I think I was around 12 when I first heard it and ever since I've been in love with it. Lily was speaking some truth...
Same. But when I got older I realised it was actually about having an eating disorder and subliminal messages in the vid crying for help, kind of sad glad she is in recovery now though.
Tentu saja semua industri musik dan film 80 % mengenai diriku, itulah tanda rindunya Allah padaku, melalui seluruh ciptaan Nya Dia berkisah tentangku, tentang keinginanku, dan posisi apa yg seharusnya kumiliki, Ibu yg di jadikan babu, Adalah ibu bumi ,,, aku ini mother earth
Just realised that to an American, the lines "I'll look at The Sun, and I'll look in The Mirror" is just Lily trying to blind herself and checking her outfit out, but for us it's newspapers.
And from a non-UK perspective, it takes on a more poetic approach. Looking at the sun means being blind to reality, looking at a mirror means being self-absorbed by oneself. Love it
keverinkarama It means the crowd of people who generally have or understands "hatred," such in the way she describes in her song, will be the ones who actually understand what she's saying. She's addressing those things to give a message of where it really leads you to.
An incredible track, the lyrics never fail to affect me. I've thought long and hard about what it's all about and come to the conclusion that Ms. Allen is preaching against disassociation - but is anyone listening? I hope so.
My favorite Lily Allen song. Topped the charts for an entire month back in the Autumn of 2008. Her vocals are on point, it's got a catchy tune, the message is about her talking about her sudden fame after the release to this song (hence her saying The Sun and the Mirror,) and also about people with their insercuities like apperence, body image and sexual perference. Ingenious!
sitting in my bed sobbing because I finally found this song!!!!! all I could remember was a big fancy house and pastel colours! I used to dance to this music video with my mum when was wee. She passed away 12 years ago now but the memory is clear :)
she is one of those who represented my world once. I never exaggerated my interest on her as she would like. she wouldn't like to be overrated. I'm not listening to her music any more. Because I've got of her What ever I needed. She is like an old good book resting in my library.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Lily’s music. The meanings of her songs are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of advanced musical theory most of the lyrics will go over a typical listener’s head. There's also Allen’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation- her personal philosophy draws heavily from biblical literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of her talent to realise that she’s not just a prodigy- she’s saying something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike this goddess truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the importance of her existential catchphrase "It’s British Time" which itself is a cryptic reference to Sugar Ray’s American epic ‘Every Morning’. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as her genius unfolds itself into their ears. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Lily Allen tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

this song is the theme song of this year people are so synthetic
Semitic 🥰
This song was ahead of its time. Lyrically it's more relevant today. 💎💎💎
I got that one instantly, however no one ever gets the the sun anymore as they stopped the page 3 :(
didn't get it
Oh, nice. I didn't get that reference. Very clever and lyrics-wise likely my favorite pop song.
r/iamverysmart
Wooooh
This song is so deep and dark behind that bubblegum sound...
That's like all of lily's songs🤣
ikr?! it's genial really..
what i like about her songs....
ruclips.net/video/yN9CPloRkro/видео.html
That's Lily's pattern! ❤️
"I look in the sun and I look in the mirror." Clever play on words trying to hint the two newspapers.
I didn't even notice that. That's brilliant.
+Maks Tracy Neither did I. Ingenious.
+Awiar Nasseri Wooooowwwwww, that is so clever and ingenious and brilliant. Not. Bunch of idiots.

No, I was genuinely astounded by how stupid you and your friends are.
I discovered her because I found an iPod of a recovering addict who’s playlist was very sad yet moving and this was one of the songs. I was like 11 im 24 now and damn Lily was right about a lot.
Damn, where did you find this functioning ipod? And how did u know from who it was?
I have several functioning iPods, about 5 or 6 if u want me to Mail them to you. A purple nano iPod, pink nano, some small silver ones and they were belonging to my family members but I have them all in a box now all functioning
@@eloisekendall1470 wow.
Still got my ipod shuffle, little orange metal thing, that will most likely work past me

I must have been under a rock. Today is the first time I have heard of her! She is awesome!!
Yes ^^
Welcome
+Jack Copeland I agree
yes she is
Not a rock, just a larger than normal pebble....
She talks her way through a song wonderfully.
This track was so ahead of its time. I remember when it came out I kept thinking, “It’ll never make the impact that it should.”
I’d say it’s less ahead of it’s time, and closer to timeless. It was accurate then, it’s equally accurate now.
@@JDT-Loadsamoney Your RUclips name is what mine used to be.
‘I’ll look at The Sun and I’ll look in The Mirror’ is such a clever lyric.
rags sheets always are
I’d imagine any not from the UK wouldn’t get it. 👍🏽
this is song is so relevant right, and it is so cleverly and beautifully written
Chloe Iversen that's the magic of our times is around the time this video was made many people saw the undercurrent of cynicism before it became totally apparent to everyone else
This comment wasn't cleverly written tho
Unnecessary ^
I remember this song back in the day, but never realised just how interesting and well-written it is. Amazing Lily Allen could make a chart-topping song like this.
What do you mean? What do you mean that you’re amazed!? It’s a good song!
I think she is the only british singer who doesnt lose her accent when she sings.
There's Marina and the Diamonds
Kate Nash
There's quuuite a few singers now who keep their accent to varying degrees. She def was the one in the last decade that made it pretty much acceptable though not unless there is someone I forgot
Damon albarn is known for keeping his when he sings

Lily Allen is one of the greatest satirists of this century.
I am a weapon of massive consumption, it's not my fault it's just how i'm programmed to function... Still the best part of the lyrics. Describes about 90% of the western human population.
Yep
Frantzen79 reluctantly, because we don't want that...

Songs like hers, with storytelling, don't exist anymore. that is a sad fact. I always come around to hear them once more!
this is one of the most honest songs I've heard in my life... :)
TwentyØnePhantasticPotatoHeads IntheBlueBadlands I love her, she's so amazing ♥️
Pretty sure it’s intended to be at least slightly tongue in cheek. Considering the fact that the artist is clearly impervious to these cultural influences yet she notices these bizarre traits in others.
Clearly this song is clever and funny...
Going through all her songs cause i havent heard of her for a while and finding out that all my old favourite songs were sung by her and i had no idea
Holly Mackinnon wow I did the same thing! Her songs are awesome
Holly Mackinnon I love her old music sooo much
the best is when she swears, typical brit!
I like her new album too but her oldest one Alright Still is my favourite. 💞
+Holly Mackinnon (Mack) I'd heard of her, but never really listened until I decided to look her up after reading an article on Alfie. Her older stuff is great! This song is the one I get others started with ;)
"I don't care about smart, I don't care about funny." But her lyrics are both. :D
U 2 cleva :*
It's witty no6 smart
THE OLDER THE SONG GETS THE MORE VALID IT BECOMES.... MY GOD SHE'S A GENIUS
THIS SONG IS BECOMING EVEN MORE VALID AS THE YEARS PROGRESS...❤️❤️❤️
Especially the bit about become famous off taking her clothes off I mean if that doesn’t describe only fans I don’t know what does
Her songs are way far ahead of its time. Imagine this song in 2020.
She rather belongs to an era that finished at the end of the noughties. That song is in the tradition of '90's- early 2000's pop.
@@ipiap this song is mid to late 2000s era
@@sugar_venom Yes, to be more precise, this type of well-crafted pop flourished from the mid-nighties until the end of the noughties.
Well, I was in high school late 90's when Barbie Girl by Acqua was a hit and this song is not too far from that one
Alina C nothing like Barbie girl, are you mad 😂😂
Lily always speaks the truth in her songs, she's a pretty clever song-writer I think
she probably wrote this about celebrity culture in the 00's. But it is wayy more fitting in this day and age of influencer culture. Fantastic.
Listening to an interview now. She says it is about the Internet culture and false images.
"I'll look at The Sun and I'll look in The Mirror."
I see what you did there.
My mind is blown. Forever.
MY GOD THAT WAS WELL SPOTTED...... I DONT KNOW WHATS RIGHT AND WHATS REAL ANYMORE
OfficialVetox The Sun and The Mirror are newspapers in the UK that often talk about popular or celebrity culture, which is the subject of criticism in this song.
My mind is still blown.

Or you were a child that had no idea about life and now you see it with rosy glasses, lol
facts
Her accent is amazing
I know i wish i was a Londoner!
Mark Coetzee it's actually not her real accent. She speaks far more posh in person. she invented that accent specifically because it's cool.
***** No, it is her accent i think
Are you stupid of course this is her accent when she sings and speaks.....(.but the point you're making is that she's from a posh background) So what? She's not always gonna speak like the queen of England. Plus she's not that posh nwayz.
She's still a londoner most of us speak like her. I'm from west london so I should know.

Gambling adverts, erectile disfunction ads, gay couple having their car delivered, mixed race couples on every ad, Twitter tweeting and followers, wagon wheels and bounty decreasing in size, the list goes on
Same with literally every song of hers🤣
i agree. sometimes we pay too much attention to what's outside that we forget to look within and nurture what's there...

This song is so deep and the video makes it even better with those Alice in Wonderland vibes... I think I was around 12 when I first heard it and ever since I've been in love with it.
Lily was speaking some truth...
Seriously though
Same. But when I got older I realised it was actually about having an eating disorder and subliminal messages in the vid crying for help, kind of sad glad she is in recovery now though.

one of the bests songs ever writen it´s especially true these days ............. timeless
Great song
Just realised that to an American, the lines "I'll look at The Sun, and I'll look in The Mirror" is just Lily trying to blind herself and checking her outfit out, but for us it's newspapers.
... Holy fuck that's actually pretty smart, she's done it so audiences worldwide can interpret it without it only sounding right to one country.
@EQ Games Well, now you can xD How did you see that part of the lyrics before?
I commented that fact years ago to a canadian yall are slow lmao
@@hotmess2766 it's not that we're slow lol, it probably got buried sadly.
And from a non-UK perspective, it takes on a more poetic approach. Looking at the sun means being blind to reality, looking at a mirror means being self-absorbed by oneself. Love it
Clever lyrics. " Look in The Sun and the The Mirror." are references to best selling red top newspapers in the U.K. Great song writing!
Such a well crafted pop song, excellent production and plenty of hooks.
I'm really loving this girl. She speaks the truth and it's funny to see bitter people who just don't get what this song is actually about.
She turns hate into insight.
What do you mean?
keverinkarama It means the crowd of people who generally have or understands "hatred," such in the way she describes in her song, will be the ones who actually understand what she's saying. She's addressing those things to give a message of where it really leads you to.
An incredible track, the lyrics never fail to affect me. I've thought long and hard about what it's all about and come to the conclusion that Ms. Allen is preaching against disassociation - but is anyone listening? I hope so.
Everything's so British! Nice video. I loved Lily when I was a child and I still like her.
I loved too!!!!💖
I feel like you couldn’t describe this era of music to someone, you just have to know
My favorite Lily Allen song. Ingenious!
Some songs are just on a different level of completeness and perfection. This is up there with the best of them.
Nostalgia !!
I agree
big message in this song.... respect .
This song is more on point now in our current day and age than it has ever been.
It's warming but is still haunting and puts a chill in any adults heart that has grown up in this world...

_Plants and celebrity news, all the vitamins I'll consume._
We are here for the same reason.
My all time favorite song.
I'm a Rock guy and I don't pay attention to Pop stars but I love Lily Allen. She's a real singer with real songs.
she is one of those who represented my world once. I never exaggerated my interest on her as she would like. she wouldn't like to be overrated. I'm not listening to her music any more. Because I've got of her What ever I needed. She is like an old good book resting in my library.
The British have done it again. Another fantastic female singer.
Same vioce different face fake news
I love that her British accent is so prominent you can hear it when she sings. She has a nice voice.
God can this guy shut up
disagree
10 years and this song is still amazing
clever words Mrs. Allen
Makes me smile to think that her songs give a message and are relatively home.
