I had heard many other greats like Chembai, Aryakudi, Maharajapuram, MDRamanathan, Balamurali, TNSeshagoplan and many more but it was only in the late 80s that I first got a chance to hear a cassette of Madurai that included Sarasa Sama Dana, Eppo Varuvaro, Vasudevayani, Seetha Pathe, Meenakshi Memudam, English note and many more and he became my immediate favourite and that continues to this day. He combines the speed of a cheetah with the endurance of a horse and his Swaras (what I enjoy most) are remarkable. He is surely one of the immortals of Carnatic music.
I remember sitting in the 'hall' created at NAPOO GARDENS in Matunga/King's circle as a foolish young boy = and being enthralled by this divine music. I went because several boys had tickets/passes and the parents were preoccupied. But - thanks to those escapades, a certain impression of this divine music has imprinted itself deeply into my psyche and i thank my good fortune for that. I am 82 years now and the thrill and nostalgia I feel on listening to this now !!! goosepimples...I thank EESWARA for this good fortune.
The greatest singer Madurai Mani Iyar was the most favorite singer of my father and his mother, who used to say that his rendition is like teaching his pupil with most devotion. This particular Keertanam is one of his masterpiece among others. Father has almost all the keertanams of Madurai Mani Iyar in his collections.
If there's a collection of 'almost all of MMI's renditions are available, you may kindly want to upload them on the YT, knowing many of them might already be available, for the benefit of his fans and oblige. 🎉
✍️ Beautiful presentation remains for ever amongst music 🎶 lovers and learning youngsters for next generations along with other music maestros like contemporary musicians like Dr.M.S.S
mridangam is definitely umayalpuram (year 1962, when he was 27 years old), not to be compared with his later day's style. For MMI he always maintained a simpler style to adapt to his sarvalagu. The recordist who was present in the concert confirmed the accompaniments. Also I have similar MMI concert recordings with Umayalpuram including some radio recordings to confirm this style of his accompaniments. His Thani avarthanams would still prove his style that he evolved in his later days. The fast pharans, and those special solkattus could be heard during his thani avarthanam in these concerts.
@@tm73827 It is from a Columbia gramphone record (LP) released in 1967. T.N. Krishnan was on violin and Vellore Ramabhadran on Mrindangam, as per the printed details.

Raghav Kaushik Papa Venkatramaiah and Umayalpuram Sivaraman - 1962
I do not know about the violinist but mridangam is definitely not by Umayalpuram.

Mrudangam is by the legendary PMI. He was of course Sivaraman sir’s guru hence often mistaken for his illustrious disciple.
