Proving what a capable driver you are and your ability to communicate experience behind the wheel. I am actually really impressed, I really do need experience a Caterham myself.
I love these Kitcars , been building them for a while now. (Mainly Westfield and Tyger chassis's) Anything above 250hp is just rediculous. They struggle for grip even with 130whp. My current project is a carbureted 13b with about 210whp and a 9500rpm redline. Going to be a fun little car.
@@stephenpeacock2627 yeah we prefer staying around 200 to 230whp maximum. Less tire wear and more driveability. We only run Nankang AR-1's on our cars.
That Cat is in a handy place for those Cat burglar scrotes that are plaguing the lands . But anyways its been a dream car of mine for a long time and hopefully some day I'll get to own one.
Westfields are great little car , they often had 3.5L rover v8's. Those made barely 200whp tho... I'm building one with a rotary engine at the moment, saves about 85kg compared to a rover v8 and makes 210 whp (with our custom porting and carburetor setup)
These are expensive toys but you can pick one up a good one for £20k ish or less. I bought a 1700 crossflow years ago for £13k, only 135bhp but you could use all of that. Hardy a 620R but a quarter of the price and when a sold it 4 years later I dropped less that £500. It was still the most fun you could have with your clothes on. Regardless of the price people smile at you and children wave.
NA cars have better throttle response than supercharged cars so that's another bonus for 420R over 620R. Not sure why Caterham stopped offering 6 speed, it was better of the two transmission although you had to pay for it. 5 speed has too short of a 1st gear and too long of a 5th gear. Roller barrel would be another cool option for better sound, response and power, which they had for R400 Superlight
Interesting accelerator pedal, if you found yourself having to keep your foot in the air or could pivot your heel off the floor without having to adjust occasionally? Looks like a blast, a bit more of an engaging drive like a motorbike ride. I did see the isolator key that Clarkson/Hammond kept kindly placing on May's bonnet.
funny that almost every one of the youtubers testing a Seven, no matter if it's a 270, a 310 or a 420 always say the same: "It's the absolute sweet spot". And I always believe them all! 🤣
Adam -Do they make it with the narrow body?I think the narrow looks better than wide body(for us fatties)-plus you could easily fit in a narrow one.How is it when engine is cold(have they sorted the map out from a few years back?)Cheers.
So lets see if I got this right...Its a great car, except for the brakes... need to be better ? The gear change smacks your knuckles into the carbon facia? Last but not least the central arm rest makes turning left, or changing the gear, or clinging to the steering wheel difficult? The final little detail, if you live in London...No Euro rating. but otherwise a great machine ??? But great fun???
Hi Sandro, actually I thought you were the very first RUclipsr ever to give an honest appraisal warts and all description of driving a Caterham. All the others go whoopee and thats it. I have finally reached an age where i can afford to buy a fun car and am seriously upset after making inquires with the intent of purchasing a 360 and discovered no Euro Rating!! As I live in London thats about to become a nightmare between the Ultra Low Emission Charge expansion and the Congestion Charge the cost of daily or even just weekend driving would be prohibitive. But then another issue is without a Euro rating what happens in 3 years time when the car would need an MOT, would it pass the new ever more stringent emissions test?
I think it’s time for you Adam to get rid of your kit car, for another kit car (620s, wide body, normal gearbox) The 620 does seem overpriced though, £18k spent upgrading a 420 would surely run rings round the 620? Fancy gearbox asides...
I'd love to try it... if I could afford it... anyone have a LHD SV for sale? Something like $1500 including shipping to Canada?.. damn... it was worth a shot anyway lol
It genuinely wasn't targeted at them, I just found so many people using these cars in situations that no owner would do. It was my way of saying this wasn't one of those videos.
Adam is a better car journalist/review er than most professionals! Brilliant.
Agreed, its nice to see someone getting back to actual motoring journalism!
@@hoonaticbloggs5402 I would disagree. He knows a lot more than most. Especially more than all those keyboard warriors that can’t appreciate anything.
Agreed

"Living with a caterham" "Taking it through macdonalds" Hmmm... I smell CarThrottle :P

What a great change up of video content. I’ve never liked the Caterhams, but your video has me secretly lusting after one!

Agreed, sometimes less is more. Too much power can make a car undriveable. I’d get this one over the 620r.

Adam when you came to the duel carriage way.you went for the indicator but it wasn't there hahahaha
What was more embarrassing was getting back into my 350Z and going for a switch rather than the normal stalk.
What a bit of kit, like litteraly 😂
Aweseome!!!

Great video Adam. You come across really well in this review, I hope you get the chance to review more cars in the future.
Thank you :)
Loved this Adam, well done. On the waiting list for a 420R SV myself after having owned two Cobras, so you're a kindred spirit.
5:07 rip that indicator stalk
Just watched you 620R video too and I want one of them too, I need Caterham to sponsor my life
Brillant video Adam!!!!
Definitely deserves more views as this was superb!
Wow! 210hp for just 560kg. This car is a missile. Great review Adam 😃👍
Would love one of these one day, great video. That’s R in the gear knob looks like the Team Rocket R 😆
love it! I used to spend lots of time at Harewood Hillclimb where there were lots of these and similar cars being "driven" appropriately.
0:14 first thought I was like: It’s a green screen background! Beautiful!
Caterham; there is no substitute. The best drivers car ever, bar none.
Love all the lotus 7 type cars, I nearly bought a Westfield with a V8 in the 90s and I’d sell my wife for a Dax Rush with a Cossie engine.

Adam is the car guy on era ...
Big up 4 adam guys ..
I remember back when Top Gear built a Caterham, that was only £16k if you built it and £17k to buy fully built.

Well done Adam and Caterham, that is the first "advert" on RUclips that I have sat the whole way through 😁👍👍👍
They go like the clappers & they look incredible 😊👍
An excellent review! Thanks!

It's great but I've hit 3 deer where I live ( argyll) so it's something to consider if you're driving one up here....maybe they'd jump over it.
How does it compare to the cobra based on your experience? Which one is more fun?

Vid was absolutely brillant !
Caterhams are cool but on a hot sunny day in the UK you see tons of them so its not a car you get if you want to stand out from the crowd.
That's not the point, it's about having fun.
In the US you can stand out and have fun. I’m actually shopping for one now.
Great colour. Like soul red crystal but darker
It's McLaren Volcano Orange

It's alright, I filmed the 620S on the weekend and confirmed it was above the sweet spot.
12:05 Oh Adam. Parked up in a wood, you flash and beep a man in a van, and you think he's "coming over because you might be in trouble"? LMAO
