    It is perfectly safe to use ordinary hand wash powder/liquid detergents with your top-load (twin) tub semi-automatic washing machine. You don't have to use (expensive) machine wash detergents. In fact, if you look at the Persil hand wash powder packaging, it is indicated "Best used for hand washing and top loader machine".
    Machine wash detergents (used for front-load fully automatic washers) are specially formulated for powerful cleaning while forming less suds (foam/lather) when mixed with water. Hand wash and top load tub washer detergents, on the other hand, are specially formulated for high foaming/lathering (produces more suds). In simpler terms, you could say machine wash detergents contain extra (adds to their cost) stain removal and whitening/brightening agents to compensate for their less foamy characteristic, while hand wash detergents contain a lot of (cheap) foaming agents and relatively less stain removal and bleaching agents. In other words, machine wash detergent is designed to be good at cleaning with little foam, while hand wash detergent is designed for cleaning using a lot of foam.
    Because of the high content of foaming agents (surfacants) contained in hand wash detergents, the insides of front-loaders can quickly develop a bad odour, especially when heat is added to the wash cycle, because fumes rise and quickly circulate inside the machine, in and outside of the drum. These fumes cling and dry onto the internal surfaces of the machine which are not part of the cleaning process. The next time you open the front door, you will not like the odour that comes out of the machine, and no amount of rinsing or cleaning the drum will get rid of the smell, because it will be coming from the other surfaces of the machine and not the drum.
    It is not an easy feat to reach and clean those surfaces to get rid of the odour. Do an experiment with hot water and hand wash detergent in a hand basin. You will feel the full brunt of the pungent fumes that immediately rise from the hot mixture. Cover the basin for a day (or just overnight) and uncover it, you will hate the smell that comes off of it! Imagine that smell clinging onto your laundry too. You won't believe how big of a problem that ordour is to front-loader users, but it is big enough to call for a special machine wash detergent formula that costs a lot more to produce so that the front-loaders remain usable.

    You don’t have to connect that hose to the top of the machine, if you can connect the hose to the faucet and it reaches the tub of the machine, you can just hold it there with the lid and it’ll fill the tub. Or you can use the shower, if it’s a hand shower and not a fixed one. In Hungary we used to have these machines (you can still buy them, but people have automatic machines now, these semi automatic ones are used by older people or to wash working clothes), everyone used the shower to fill them. And we used to have machines made from stainless steel, some of them even had water heaters, but from the shower, you could always put the hot water in it.

    Just did my first wash. I didn't realize how detailed your explanation was until I tried turning a knob with wet hands 😅😅🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️
    Also after draining the dirty water - I forgot to turn the dial back to normal - wah si I have drained all of my softener 😅😅😅
    Also I got around the short water pipe issue by connecting the washing machine pipe to bidet that is used for the toilet. Of course I have to reconnect the bidet head after I am done with washing otherwise the water will just keep running.

    Very detailed information, thanks. You say that you use about 500 Bob per month which is very cool. How many times do you do ur laundry per week? N this may sound silly but when do you know uve exceeded the max number in kgs?

    • @mercymbuthia
      @mercymbuthia  3 года назад +3

      Hey Eve and thanks for watching,,my electricity consumption has gone up by 500 bob and I do laundry once a week .
      When you find that clothes are not spinning smoothly during washing ( zinakwama kwama zinakataa kuzunguka) mostly you've exceed the weight ama umeweka maji kidogo.Water should always be slightly above the clothes level
