  • The following story contains details of violence and assault and could be disturbing to sensitive viewers.
19-year-old Luvo Gqaza appeared briefly in the Kuils River magistrate's court in Cape Town on Thursday. He is charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm as well as contravention of the Older Persons Act. In the video, the teenager is seen in a verbal exchange with his grandmother and goes on to assault her. The victim, who's receiving treatment in hospital for an unrelated ailment, says she does not want the teen to be granted bail. The case was postponed to July 19 as the teenager remains in police custody on suicide watch.
Thee South African Council for the Aged's supervising social worker in the area where the assault took place and member of Age-In-Action, Sashma Bergman speaks to Masechaba Khumalo about the possible interventions to prevent such occurrences in communities.

I'm happy to hear how excellent the Western Cape is dealing with older persons. I left Cape Town to assist my widowed mother living in EC because of the abuse of her eldest son...he claimed half her property, physically abused her at one stage..his girlfriend 30 years his junior stole her Sassa grant. Because of corruption and in the EC. Filed dockets went missing after these incidents were reported. Social Workers don't seem to be too invested in the rural areas..bribes...witchcraft. So many elderly have become silent because there seems to be no help for them in some communities. Crippled elderly going to the bank to get their grant because the children steal that monthly stipend of theirs.

Surely families & neighbours know these assaults happen (child abuse too), many remain silent in part through fear of retaliation, as well as having a lack of faith in Social Services & SA Police Services/Justice Departments to protect victims (& those who report this) by putting the perpetrators in jail for a very, very long time. Churches too can help. 😢😢

Absolutely Heartbreaking and very sad, Family Member was asked to Film, The Family member who was supposed have reported this abuse 😪, The Lawlessness in this ground is too much, We needed a massive change of law and order in this Country, One wonders how many people are suffering out there ?? The Boy must rot in Jail, but above all, Children should be taught at the young age about respect and honour.
