Someone told me it was an international motor or something. Maybe not international but some 3rd party. and it was intended for commercial use. It doesn’t have a timing belt or chain. It has timing gears. Not sure if all that’s true. But the guy that told me is a pretty reliable source.
I remember back in the 80s, when most Ford conversion vans either had the 4.9 or the 5.8. The lower end conversion van companies used the 4.9 and higher end converters mainly offered the 5.0 and 5.8. The dealership I worked at, had a mix of both ends of the conversion van spectrum. But, some people back then, just wouldn’t go with a 6 cylinder, even though it was just 2 cubic inches smaller than the 5.0. Times have certainly changed.
A friend of mine ran the Ford 300 6 cylinder in 80s and 90s Econoline work vans ( he had a fleet of about 6) hundreds of thousands of miles. Never an engine failure. Between 300 and 400 k he would start replacing them. And they were used and abused for a hundred thousand more by the next owner!! One of the most durable engines ford ever built!
Congratulations on 100K subscribers Rich! The 300 six has to be one of the best engines Ford ever made. With two dead holes next to each other it sounds like a head gasket issue.
Buddy of mine and I had identical F150s except mine was 5L v8 and his was the inline. Empty mine was faster but loaded his in line would pull away from me on the hills and use less fuel. One of fords best engines
Congrats on 100k boss. When I was in HS I was using my parents 1985-90 (not sure on the year) F150 super cab with the straight six. Man I beat on that thing & it took everything. Had 2 gas tanks. I used the rear tank & filled it as needed & the old man used the front tank.
You will get it up and running fine. That's what pop's van was doing I have a few videos showing the gasket and the blow by. I had to put a used piston and rod $30 on it from eBay. I reused the rod bearing since it wasn't knocking knocking
Rich. I had a 81 F100. Black 300 6 cylinder 3 speed overdrive trans on the floor. It had 275,00 miles on it. Burning oil. Replaced the engine with a remanufactured one. $ 799.00 with the old core. Drove it till the body was gone in 1999 Donated to a charity. Took that off on my taxes. Great commuter truck and for light hauling. No options at all. Shawn.
These motors have a shitload of torque. I drove a f150 reg cab short bed 2wd, 5 speed manual with this 4.9. And I used to leave in 2nd it has so much low end torque. I remember being bummed I didn’t have the 5.0 v8. But after a Week I fell in love with the inline 6.
My brother has a F 100 with that motor with 42,XXX original miles on it. Got it from the Shell Oil Refinery in Wood River Illinois at a auction. Well maintained but the body is ate up
Lesson learned ! Don't pull a spark plug wire off when its running unless you have the correct insulated tool ! I've had the shit shocked out of me many moons ago . Something I'll never do again ! Sounds like a blown head gasket to me .
I can personally MSD at full strength is 60,000volts. (Here’s your sign) For comparison a police taser can reach up to 50,000v but to be honest I don’t know the amperage values of either off the top of my head. But I’ll never forget that some MSD are 60,000 volts. And that if you’re ground point is your other hand...then it’s passing your heart going from one hand to the other.
Sounds like it overheated pretty hard at some point. I’ve seen Them in junkyards with what appears to be stock head gaskets on these things still intact. Check for straightness on both the head and the block. Just to make sure that those are going to corporate again with just a fresh gasket. Who knows just how hot it really got.
Head gasket is easy should take an hour or so. Fords biggest misake was killing that motor. Dont worry much, we ran these motors all the way down to around 30 or so psi and they still ran.
Sorry for the off topic question. Would you recommend using valvoline extended performance high milage with marvel mistery oil syntetic on a 3.5 EcoBoost with 25,000?
My 94 F150 4x4 5.8, So my engine Is violently shaking at idle, I've already replaced motor mounts, Idle air control valve, PCV valve, Harmonic balancer, EGR valve, EVP sensor, Tune up and ignition coil pack. And my engine is still shaking at idle, but it doesn't shake while driving just at stop. Can you all give me some suggestions, thanks all..
I had the same engine in a 94 e150 I heard they were indestructible mine ended up with a rod bearing knocking I should have fixed it. He could probably would have drove 5 years with lol
Why are you messing with it? It has a lot of rest on it. It would make a good wood Is huller, or a good parts truck. It's your time and money 💰 👍good luck
It is a good learning experience throught his channel. Non mechanic and glad I had my fun in 60's and 70"s. My rich friends let me drive all the cars of value. Barracudas and Camaroes cougars mustangs a ZOO. All I owned was 59 vw my Dad made me buy twice😊
We call it wet stacking in the diesel world...same with a gaser...fuel will do wonderful things to the cylinder walls...make it look like a mirror....no...Bueno
One of the stupidest things Ford done was killing that motor
Supposedly it couldn't meet EPA emissions
One of the stupidest thing ford did was stop making cars and minivans. also going BMW like engineering! Ford is in big trouble!

Love seeing these old trucks giving some TLC thanks for putting the effort great video 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Great engine and bulletproof. Had an 88 Econoline with the 300 6cyl and c6. A beast. Geared timing gears simple to work on.
Congrats on the 100k brother!!!!
As soon as ya cranked it and i heard the galloping in the crank sound, knew it was something with compression. Great video!
100k congratulations Rich.

I owned a van and a truck with the 300 and 3 on the tree 70s & 80s they were indestructible
I got 95 e150 cargo van 4.9 l6 has 280,000 on engine does not burn oil and still running beautiful

I really appreciate these educational videos LOL yeah I think we've all done something like not using the proper tool for the job😅
This will make a nice build series keep going rich this is my favorite obs ford truck

I'm a chevy truck guy through and through, but those older f-150 with that 300 6 were the best 👌 tried and true 👍

100,000 subs heck yeah
Glad to learn about that engine.😊
They didn’t blow head gaskets new. It does happen occasionally with high mileage. I love that engine.

4.9litre man thats a big I6!!! Heard it was a good motor!!
100k SUBS for the Boss!🤙
I would love to have that project my style of truck
In-line 6 best motor to rebuild balance and blue print and your solid
It could be the rings. Make sure you aren't pressurized the crankcase
Ya damn you can upgrade that timing gear to cast iron from the factory phenolic - one less possible failure
❤
Oh yeah cylinder to cylinder leak they usually tick

Don't overthink that engine. It's low compression, low rpm. Booger hone the cylinder if ya got to and run it. It will keep chugging forever.
Why are you messing with it? It has a lot of rest on it. It would make a good wood Is huller, or a good parts truck. It's your time and money 💰 👍good luck
I'm just waiting for the "first" comment..

Not a common problem most likely overheated
