Worked bonsai in Florida so i had many tropicals. Moved 20 hours north and excited to learn more about deciduous trees. Already bought maples and ready to go.

Thank-you! I have been trying to find information about how to keep my Japanese maple in the same pot and keep it the same size, rather than creating a true Bonsai from it. This video is exactly what I was looking for. I have saved this video to use next year (my tree is covered in leaves at the moment in late spring). In the meantime, I’ll be using your ribbon trick to mark future pruning cuts. I’m so excited!

Should we do any of this when first transplanting into our larger container from the nursery pot? Should we remove soil look for root circling or wood roots, treat, etc, even though we aren’t pruning roots down at that time?

Thank you for the video. I'm curious how the tree came in ("bloomed") later, after the pruning of its roots. I have a root-bound, potted Japanese maple that is about 2 meters high that I re-potted in March but it hasn't leafed-out very well, so I think I'm going to have to prune its roots. Though I suppose I need to wait until it's dormant again to do that.

My container is easily 4 times as large as the one you have. My Japanese Maple tree cannot be removed and the pot is a beautiful terra-cotta. We cannot turn the container on it’s side. How can we root prune the tree? My tree has been in the pot for about 14 years. The last three years the tree looks like it has seen better days. I love the tree. Is it possible to root prune the tree while still in the pot?

Where could I find a container like this?
