    I was taught to draw squares between the diagonal and cross-peaks in COSY to interpret the coupling between protons. Interesting that your interpretation is slightly different.

    I think the more downfield alkene proton would be the beta proton (as in partial positive for Michael addition) whereas he labelled it as the alpha.

      D'oh! Tom, you're probably correct. If we switch the assignments of the alpha and beta protons, do the coupling patterns still make sense? (Asking because I don't have time to check, not because I don't know the answer!) :-D

      @@mevansthechemist Yes, to me they do because the beta hydrogen atom has the extra coupling of the methyl group.
