  • Ageing is the underlying cause of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and neuro-degenerative diseases. In the past year, the data has shown that old age has been the number one contributor to #COVID19 related hospitalisations, disability, and deaths.
Geroscientists have long hypothesized that by targeting the biology of #ageing, all diseases of ageing can be delayed. Therefore, the geroscience approach will be critical in tackling further infections and pandemics.
This session, Dr Nir Barzilai, Director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, shares more on the geroscience approach and its relevance in the #pandemic.

Great job Brian, Nir and NUS Medicine! Hopefully we will know more in May 2021 about this exciting nonprofit committed to spending about a billion dollars per year to try to defeat human aging!

Research on fasting started after observing some Indian monks (Hindu, Jain, Buddhists) living very long while on one meal a day diet with regular fasting. Just like how research on Turmeric and so many herbs, meditation, breathing (like Pranayama) started and were all found to have health benefits. Similarly, soon science will have to research no-water fasting that these traditions use. Am sure we will find out no-liquid, no-water fasting is better than no-food fasting alone.

All my comments regarding the ITP metformin study & the Espada 2020 C elegans metformin study get deleted. Why?

    Nir Questions on Tame:
    How many IRBs are there?
What is the cost per patient?
What is the randomization meaning is there a placebo arm with 1 to 1.
The fact that this trial is taking so long to start when metformin has a benefit for covid infections seems absurd!
None of this is a criticism of Nir who obviously has great intentions.
However academic medicine perhaps very different story.
Perhaps a better way to go is when subject 65 to 80 is enrolled include 2 to 3 of their children in 30s or 40s who will inform the study team if a medically related event (cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, etc) has happened.
In this approach skip all the smarty pants IRBs and academic medical centers.

I left a comment on the Fight Aging blog asking if metformin could be used for prevention of severe covid last year on March 15; I cited an article (Scott & Kubes 2018; ' Death to the neutrophil') proposing metformin be used to treat ARDS. It also seemed like metformin might be efficacious since many of the comorbidities associated with severe covid have an underlying theme of dysfunctional AMPK signalling. Unlikely someone would read a blog comment and actually follow up on it, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Haridara, Ashwagandha, and a combination called Triphala. All are good natural AMPK activators and mTor inhibitors I have found. Doctor Barzilai must study them. Thanks.
