Billie has been rehearsing these shots for this video all her life. She did the story boards for every scene, layout, costume, lighting, and transitions to match the song's beats. Nothing in there is an accident, including the street traffic lights that cast a haze into the room. She had several behind the scenes posts about this very music video. She showed her notebook in her NY Times interview that also showed her staging with her mother on their living room floor.
She obviously got a lot of her ideas from Melanie Martinez. Billie Eilish has sang some of her songs and admitted to liking her art. The black eyes and tone of Bury a Friend is definetly Melanie inspired.

@@Videoeditorreacts Variety just released a video interview of Finneas with the gear they use now, in case you're interested. Their aesthetic genius overshadows, but they are real techie nerds when it comes to av do dads.
You were pretty close with your interpretation of it being "Billie is the monster talking to herself"! A lot of her songs have multiple layers of meaning (probably in part because she and her brother Finneas write them together, so there's literally two different perspectives on every track), but for this one, she's said at least one of the inspirations was sleep paralysis. The idea of Billie's "sleep paralysis demon" talking to her and trying to understand her. The music video was just meant to be an homage to horror movies in general. She didn't direct this one; Michael Chaves did. But she had a ton of creative input, as always. For the upside-down bridge shot, you can find the behind-the-scenes of this music video on RUclips. She's basically sitting in a chair that has a frame around it, with the camera connected to and hanging down from the frame, pointed at her face. The entire chair and frame are attached to another frame by a single axel, so the whole thing spins her upside-down. The outro is part of the song, because it leads directly into the next song on the album, "ilomilo".
She didn’t direct the ones from her first album but the ideas came from her, in her documentary you can see how involved she was, about angles, how she wanted everything to go, its crazy
She directed: “You should see me in a crown” “When the party’s over” and “Xanny” from her first album. She also directed “Six feet under” and “Everything I wanted” from before her second album👍
From what I recall in the making - the 360° turn scene was a constructed frame with a harnessed seat attached with camera attached facing her , incredible technology
She directs all her own videos and has said recently in an interview that she'd love to direct videos for other people but she's just so busy right now, she doesn't know when she'd find the time.
I’m so glad someone is appreciating this masterpiece of a music video. Easily my favorite music video of all time and I don’t think it will be beat anytime soon.
Billie and her brither are true artists. Super creative, always experimenting with sound, lyrics, ideas, film. Such a great team. I hope you check out more of her videos - so good.
There really isn’t much I can say that has an already been said…all of Billie’s videos have “hidden” messages and/or symbolism that clearly, someone as talented as you, will pick up on. As others have said, I also suggest “can you see me in a crown” and “when the party’s over”. “when all the good girls go to hell” is great, I just prefer the others first. GREAT REACTION!!! Ps - you just got a new sub and I’ll be looking forward to more Billie reactions.
If you were wondering about the little bit of music at the end, it’s there because it transitions seamlessly into the next song on the album, ‘ilomilo’
Ok so billie and finneas storyboard and come up with all her music videos concepts period she has making the videos for all of her videos i believe she is so amazing
So glad you got onto Billie! Also this video directly (visually at least) leads straight into the next one which was All the good girls go to hell!! which is amazingly simple yet brilliant. Id love to see your take on some of her videos like Bad guy (amazing visuals). Also her older stuff is very simple but really well done.
I'm glad you reacted this. Her music videos are so cool and amazing. Also her brother Finneas has great music and most of his mv are one shot. My personal favorite is Let's Fall in Love for the Night and I'd love to know what you'll think about it
This song is about Night Terrors and Sleep Paralysis. One is partially awake but still in REM so the brain still is producing the neurochemical that keeps the body from moving. So one can go through a lot of very unsettling shit. Like have intruders in your room standing over you or sitting on your bed. Some imagine alien abduction. Others imagine being possessed. Others experience a form of sexual assault. Billie is trying to convey the whole darkness and disjointed fear she experienced during these episodes. Note that the injection into her back is repeated in the beginning of her video All the Good Girls Go to Hell.
The perfect music video for Halloween season! Beyond the compositions, lighting, and editing, Billie's own movements and performance REALLY lean into the horror movie vibes, with brilliant results. :)
you have to react to the Music Video of Hostage by Billie, is really pretty and the storyline and choreo and lights work is beautiful my favorite music video from her❤
The hotel (hallway) scenes were shot in an abandoned hotel, not on a set. Billie spoke in an interview about how bad (moldy) the hotel smelled. With Billie, the first guess should always be that it's "real" (i.e. the spiders in Crown, her swimming through furniture in Happier Than Ever, the "black goo" coming out of her eyes in When the Party's Over.....no CGI)
Wonderful reaction, thank you. I know you've done three Billies already, but I'd say that there are two others that are truly stunning ... "When the Party's Over" and her most underrated video and song imho, "Hostage." Cheers!
Her "What was I mad for?" about kills me, a 55 y.o. gay man, living with undetectable HIV over a quarter century, artificial hips, and now hear issues, in spite of being Vegan. You should review that, if you haven't already.
Loved your reaction! It was fun how you gave an insight on how things were done and the transitions. The song is so amazing! Would love to hear your thought on Nightwish - Noise :D
So much artistic and real work goes into her music videos it’s absolutely amazing to see. Could you do a behind the scenes video of her music videos? Would be really cool to hear your take on that Edit to add: Billie direct her music videos and a lot of the times she’s got her video’s planned out before she even have the music. In her documentary she showed her notebook and how she scribble and draw her plans out
Would LOVE for yall to get into other ones like: Lovely, Everything I Wanted, Xanny, anything from this album is a banger for sure. Also Finneas her brother wrote a lot of her songs, and he does the instrumentals and production himself. Hes immensely talented and has some banger tracks of his own to look into.
Billie designed that set in her diary when she was 16 everything is her ideas but being a minor they still didn't let her direct alone, but she has been directing and also editing since she was 14!!! She was the editor of bad guy and her many other mv! When she was a kid she was making this stuff, she loves music videos ☺️ and she hates green screen! Most of her mv are all real even in “All the good girls go to hell” that falling angel (Lucifer) who falls into hell = our earth .. is real, same NDA with the cars Etc and she said she wanted these syringes in her back to be real too, but they didn't let her bc she was too crazy as a teenager 😂 she also had depression … strongly… 💔 and she was just expressing her feeling.. she also represents phobias for syringes, those who touch your face and body etc and also for spiders in “you should see me in a crown”, she is going “against” human phobias, she also represents human fears , problems (mental health too) She said SHE is the monster under HER bed, bc we humans are our worst enemy especially our mind ! 💔
You asked what influenced Billie on this song? Nothing! She's just Billie. She's brilliant. Her and Finneas. She's like Steven King. She sees something and imagines what it would be or do if??? That's what makes them great.
So the scene when she was like spinning upside down, and then behind the scenes, they actually showed that she was strapped like a crane and they just turned her and a full circle
I believe she said in interviews this was inspired by her sleep paralysis and a movie she saw called The Babadook. She had storyboards and camera angles and drawings. It didn’t take her long to start fully directing her own videos, as she had them all planned out anyway. EDITED to add: You must do her songs “NDA” and “You Should See Me In A Crown” (vertical video). There is NO cgi or green screen. Mind blown. Enjoy.
Love your reactions so far. I always thought this vid was very much inspired by Haunting of Hill house ,and Nellies story. She has said it is about sleep paralysis, which was somethin Nellie suffered with. A lot of the shots are similiar to the shots in the series. I havent seen it confirmed, but I am pretty sure it must be. Was looking to see if you had reacted to any Bjørk, and I found none!. Please do Pagan Poetry and Hyperballad ++
Yeah the machine for that one shot was awesome, the camera and herself was strapped to whatever was making her spin, I’m pretty sure there’s BTS videos somewhere for this
Couple of Halloween ago I did a aerial hoop routine to this . I was a loony and in a straight jacket . Carried on by two people dressed as security guards . They dumped me in the middle of the room and said” don’t bite anyone AGAIN “ . Few minutes of me freaking out the audience by getting out of the Jacket, sniffing the audience and licking my best friend. Then when he says Billie I get on the hoop and do my routine. Just before the end I am back where the guards left me
The beat you heard at the end is part of the next song on the album. The visuals for this video are tied to all the good girls go to hell MV. WHICH might be a good third video to watch followed closely by when the party’s over and then you should see me in a crown. That last mostly for shock value
Check out the PopBuzz interview with Woody. She mentions her horror film influences, though she can't remember one of the names of the films. The two she remembers are the American Horror Story series and The Babadook.
There is a very simple video that I love of hers, everything I wanted, Id like to hear your opinion, Its all in a car basically but id like to hear what you think, if you could of course ❤
Loved the reaction and analysis. I would also really recommend this K-pop group called Stray Kids as well! Their music is amazing and their music videos are insane. I’d recommend checking out S-class which is one of their more recent songs :D
I wish you had turned the captions off. Don't know why we only saw then when you paused, but they seemed to be auto-generated because they weren't the correct lyrics.
The beat at the end is a transition into the next song on the album
And that's iloo milooooooo🛐
Yess I thought I was the only one who noticed

The beat you heard at the end is part of the next song on the album. The visuals for this video are tied to all the good girls go to hell MV. WHICH might be a good third video to watch followed closely by when the party’s over and then you should see me in a crown. That last mostly for shock value
There is the sound of a shovel full of dirt being thrown when they say "Bury a friend"
But you got to listen very close 😮
Good ear!
idk if it's really the case but billie's first few music video is like a story in a way
Check out the PopBuzz interview with Woody. She mentions her horror film influences, though she can't remember one of the names of the films. The two she remembers are the American Horror Story series and The Babadook.
I believe she said that her main inspiration for this music video was a film called "the babadook"
You haven’t seen You Should See Me In a Crown🤭❤️
She basically did the story board / screen play but didn’t yet do the directing at the shoot at this point.
All billie videos are peace of arts
There is a very simple video that I love of hers, everything I wanted, Id like to hear your opinion, Its all in a car basically but id like to hear what you think, if you could of course ❤
You NEED to react to “all the good girls go to hell” by Billie as well ❤
Loved the reaction and analysis. I would also really recommend this K-pop group called Stray Kids as well! Their music is amazing and their music videos are insane. I’d recommend checking out S-class which is one of their more recent songs :D
whatttt, i was watching all your videos - didn’t mean to be this early…💀💀
Billlie wants to do all stunts herself and tries to not use editing for things she could have done irl
DO MORE FROMM BILLIEEEE
If you do billie again, I definitely recommend, when the parties over, you shouod see me in a crown, all the good girls go too hell and therefore i am
this song was influenced by sleep paralysis. she has experienced it.
you need to do a video on Therefore I Am or NDA next
I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that those needles were real and they did actually go in her skin.
Her influence was her sleep paralysis
It was illomillo at the end
I have always thought that either she or someone clise to here had a psychiatric hospitalization. The video and the lyrics.
"Evanescence - Bring me to life" and The Birthday Massacre?
All The Good Girls Go to Hell is part 2 of this video and it’s super good.
This song is about the nightmares she has
Buc-ee's!
You should really watch the continuation of this video "All the good girls go to hell" it's amazing in visual effects too
Could you please explain why it is called dutch angle?
If you like scary stuff you should check out Doja Cat and her new album music videos as well!
I wish you had turned the captions off. Don't know why we only saw then when you paused, but they seemed to be auto-generated because they weren't the correct lyrics.
