Thanks for the quick simple review. You are an excellent addition to the Dice Tower reviews. I hope to hear more reviews of your favorite card and abstract games. As for Kulami, I picked up my copy today :)
The remembering where you've last placed could be helped by having a special marble; either slightly larger or off color. So that on your turn once you've chosen your move you would pick it up, replace it with a normal marble and place the "last move" marble in the new space.
Very late reply but some later printings incorporate a sort of pawn to mark it. There are also these metal rings you can buy, but it's not really cost-effective if you live outside of Europe.
I just bought the game and it comes with two ``pawns`` you can place over the last marble you played so it makes it easier to remember where you last played.
you could probably use an extra marble for each player that is specially marked so you know which marble you just placed; each turn you would pick it up, put a normal one in its place then move the special one to a new spot. You could probably do that one handed too.
Go to a dollar store, and spend a buck for a set of checkers with undersized checkers. Take one checker of each color and players and use these to put in the board. And even cheaper solution is to get ahold of some thick cardboard, and cut it, and then color the two cut pieces, one red and one black. Idea is to have a flat piece/marker that can sit on an area and mark it.
Nice.. Thanks for keeping it short and sweet. I guess you could use a slightly different coloured marble each turn as your 'last go' and then swap it out to help you remember.. This is going on my wish list
No no, its a misunderstanding, I love abstracts too, I just made a little joke because Zee talks about abstracts and small card games (which is the type I also like quite a bit) a lot.
XinBiDe The lack of theming ends up being a turn off for people. People like to have theme to give context to what they are doing. As someone who designs abstract (strategy) games, I do have an interest in people playing them. You can see this on my channel and the designs I have put up on RUclips.
XinBiDe Still, for people, they like themes with their game, to give a game context, even if it doesn't seem interest (ie, Agricola). The thing about abstracts is that, on a meta level, they are random. There is no context for the rules being what they are, and it is easy to go wrong in a design of an abstract game.
I would put a token on the tile you placed last, then you would only have to remember to put the token on the tile you played last time (& take it off afterwards! ha)
Cool a You? Yes you are Zee :-) By the way, good review. I have an interest in getting the game now. Edit/Update since original comment here: I did pick the game up and it appears the copy I had included two rings (one red and another black) that it appears address the issue Z was discussing. Anyone else happen to get the game and see this also?
Some of my favourite games are abstracts (LOA, Amazones), but I don't like this one. Having to remember not just where your opponent just played, but also where YOU played the turn before does become a pain in the neck if you play seriously (which implies longer thinking time and, thus, more time to forget).
Wow, those red and black marbles look identical to me (in this video). This game must be horrible for colour-blind people like me. Why not red and white or black and white marbles?
I am really glad to see Zee putting out some abstract reviews. His addition to the channel was definitely worth it.
Zee is the dedicated abstract reviewer for the Dice Tower? I am glad they have someone.

I love this game. My favorite. The game comes with little caps which will indicate each player's last turn.

Read this after writing my similar comment. Having a marked or different marble would fix the having to remember problem. Seems obvious.

Great to see you reviewing, Zee!
I totally enjoyed that.

Awesome... new content on weekends! Thx Zee
i might get it just to see if it can be customized for a 3+ person game
I love this game! Thanks for the review Zee!
"Zee takes a look at this abstract strategy game", I am like ":O". What is next, small card games?!
But really, I like your reviews, great job Zee.
Why the stigma against abstract strategies? I don't get it. They're the only games really worth playing for me.

Themes often bore me unless it's a theme that is REALLY well integrated, like in Eldritch Horror or something.

great review.
small suggestion, set the audio to mono :)
Absolutely great game! It feels like a classic like backgammon
It seems to me that this could be played with more than two people. Just need additional marbles of another color.
I think Knizia just released(?) a new game based on this very game. Sthg with cooking and food?!
Fun Fact: Kula mi in Norwegian can mean "My marble"!
Cool game :)
Did you notice the theme song sounds like "Hurts So Good" by John Mellencamp?
haha! I thought I was the only one who thought that :)
Thank you
4:19 - "it breaks the mold" ....... Pun intended? :)

If you like Kulami and think it's original, I recommend you to check Nestorgames.
