  • Scott Boyle, the then U13/14 Lead Phase Coach at Leyton Orient, delivered a session on Pressing from the front, with a subtopic of switching play.
Ryan, the then U13/14 Assistant Coach lead the warm-up with a technical practice to work on receiving the ball and checking shoulders, but still with a pressing element.
The first activity is a two-touch technical practice, working in a circle the player needs to run into the middle and pass the player on their right. When you pass you are 'pressing' the next man to force them to take their first touch off line before playing to the next player.
This progresses into two-touch or one-touch, giving the players a decision on which is best to take.
Ryan gives the players plenty of opportunities to 'fix' and solve problems. He lets the session play giving players the chance to organise and lead from within the session.
Ryan moves onto a different passing and receiving practice, the next activity forces the player to step out to receive the ball, practice adding disguise to their movements to receive.
The final progression sees the players again playing short quick combinations off 1 and two touches in the technical practice.

In my opinon, the progression was introduced too early but it was a good initiative to raise the standard and concentration. Good drill for passing and first touch / communication, decisions
