- Apollo 12 - Moonwalking (Full Mission 17)
The first moonwalk begins. Pete Conrad descends the ladder with his infamous small step reference, takes a contingency sample and helps Al Bean descend the ladder. TV problems ensue and the first panoramas are taken. The Solar Wind Experiment is also placed on the surface along with the S Band Antenna.
This is the first of several videos dedicated to the moonwalks of Apollo 12 and would not have been possible without the assistance of the APoloo Lunar Surface Journal, who provided many of the cans of the checklists and my special thanks go to Brian McInall who has provided scans of his Apollo 12 LROC with superimposed annotations, which have enhanced this and subsequent videos. Many many thanks.
All video, audio and photos are courtesy NASA.
When Pete went down the ladder saying “whoopie,” that just cracks me up. Also the fact that these guys were all best friends just makes this whole thing so endearing. That’s one hell of a “guys roadtrip.”
Apollo 11: "That's one small step for man one giant leap from mankind"
Apollo 12: "oooh that's soft and queasy"
😂😂😂
Listening to this pure and genuine conversation about experiencing the moon has my heart happy
Yeah there must have been less pressure to say everything so formally on the 2nd go around.
The camera failure really makes Apollo 12 feel mysterious;
the photos from that moon landing are like brief glimpses of what the astronauts experienced.
RIP Alan Bean. One of the more likable Apollo astronauts. Four moonwalkers left : Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 ; Dave Scott, Apollo 15 ; Charlie Duke, Apollo 16; Harrison Schmitt, Apollo 17.
In 1991 when Jim Irwin died, someone posed this question: will humans return to the moon before the number of living moonwalkers reaches zero ? Even then it did not look likely, and today, if it does happen, it will confirm what Charlie Duke predicted in a lecture I attended in 2010, that the next human voice from the moon will be Chinese.
@@Sootaroot yes
Still 2 of the original Apollo 13 Crew is still alive. (But never walked on the moon)
51:23 is when Al Bean moves the camera and points it right at the sun...he knew right away that it was bad. He didn't seem to know that he had fried the thing
@@tedpeterson1156 I remember it rather clearly. Yes, it was broadcast live. And that's why I remember it so clearly. It took a few minutes to figure out, but I was crushed. As I'm sure many other people were too. Surely not the least of them was Al Bean.
They told them in the simulations “do not point the camera at the sun”
This is great best one yet LM5 great job coordinating all of this. Going back to shots of Yankee clipper and then back to intrepid on the moon . It is a true masterpiece to watch this and this is such a great crew to watch and listen to
thanks for your comments Matthew. .appreciated
Conrad's famous 'small step' quote at 15:28
Supposedly he had arranged with an Italian journalist to say just that ("That may have been a small one for Neil, but that was a long one for me!"). The Italian journalist -- a leftist woman named Oriani Fallaci -- had claimed that NASA was instructing the astronauts what to say (scripting their momentous declamations). He challenged her on that and told her right there what he intended to say when he stepped onto the Moon (and it was something obviously lacking in gravitas).

LM5- This Apollo 12 series is your best work ever. I don't know what you have planned next, but it sure will be hard to top this!
well...I planned 11 next - did that - now back to 12....
Pete cracks me up with his sassy "stand by? You guys ought to be spring-loaded!" comeback.
As a young fan of the moon program, I was crushed by the broken camera on Apollo 12, and then the scrubbing of Apollo 13. By the time Apollo 14 came around, I and many others were all revved up for the real deal.
feel for those of us who were just too young to remember it....must have been an amazing time
As always, thank you for these, my friend!
What a great way to spend an evening, listening to Apollo 12 at the Snowman. Also, as Peter would have asked: "How does that strike ya?" Answer is, 'pretty good, Pete. Pretty good!'
Heys there matey - hope you enjoy the content - took me a while to work out how to show it without TV but was rescued by the ALSJ and a guy who did the backgrounds and from then on I was set! Taking 3 weeks to get these together!!! regards LM5
It's great. I remember that camera going out and the BBC being at a loss as to what to do or say. Waiting for ALSEP and rest of EVA-1. Cheers
Loved the video LM5, can't wait for the next in the series!
Its coming along...slowly
I hope you're still considering finishing Apollo 12. The archive.org tapes just aren't as good as your transcript-and-visuals-added versions.
@@tofof the next installment - this weekend!!
This is gold. Thank you for this!
You are welcome Paul
Outstanding Videos!. Thank you and God Bless you lunarmodule5 for making these incredible legendary videos available.
Thanks SJD
Bean: "Here is the TV. And it's pointing toward the Sun. That's bad" I can just imagine Al Bean realizing he screwed up and thinking "Oh no, I just broke the damn thing" LOL Yeah Al, that was bad! Thanks. I can still remember how disappointed I was. But the mission was a huge success and that's all that matters.
Yes, it was a success, but the camera failure did nothing to slow the US public's waning interest in Apollo, and gave ammunition to the politicians who were against the project from the start.
Thank you for all your hard work!
welcome whos
"I hit it on the top with my hammer. I figured we didn't have a think to lose."

Oh man LM5 once again you have outdone yourself.... I was wondering how you were going to cover the 1st moonwalk and once again you had me feeling like I was there with Pete and Al.... I wish that Pete could see this series covering 12... I know he would love them.... I cant wait for the 2nd moonwalk and the visit to Surveyor 3... Awesome job once again :)
Thanks american - appreciate your comments as always....LM5
As Pete Conrad would have said, "Faaaan-tastick!"
Thanks SP...appreciated
Miss "Lil Pete" a whole bunch
or good job babe!
Spectacular video. Excellent work!

Great work by you as always thanks again
Thanks Dorothy!
Outstanding video...thank you!
Thanks Brent
AWESOME!! AWESOME!!
Thanks keno!
thank you .great videos
15:20 Pete Conrad step
44:50 Alan Shep... whoops! Alan Bean step
You did an amazing Job with your Full Mission Series. Please Continue.
Best regards from a German Fan of yours 👍🏻
thanks for your kind words...appreciate your taking the time...regards LM5
What I also like is in the still photo montage, the picture of the sun in it's natural white color. Sadly, I've sometimes read moon hoaxers using this as an indication that it had to be faked becuase "we all know the sun is yellow." Their lack of basic astronomy knowledge is astounding.
Also their basic knowledge of photography.
The hoaxers are best ignored. Anything else just encourages them.
"The sun is yellow!" Now THAT's funny!! (Gives you hope that the moon hoaxers may actually make good, but not great, comedians.)
R.I.P. Capt. Alan Bean
Great stuff Thanks LM5
I like how this video seems to actually have the original radio delay.
I have never been a fan of when moon landing videos edit out the delay;
it takes away a lot of the immersion.
Excellent job!
thanks gas
whoopee! that mightve been a small step for neil, but it was a long one for me!
Happy New Year, LM5.
there having way to much fun. lucky bastards..
Standing by 👌
Be a while....lol...have patience. Have you watched any of the other full missions?
lunarmodule5
Yeah. 13 was the first. I think that’s all of the Apollo’s (11, 12 & 13). I’m sure I can find plenty to watch on your channel in the meanwhile. Thanks again for the great work on these and I look forward to the rest of 12 as they come.
I have been enjoying all the missions you have uploaded. Thank you for doing this. Do you plan to post more?
the next installment is imminent!
This is just so cool to watch. Too bad they burned out the camera. But man oh man I love this stuff. When will part 18 be ready?
Great job, cheers.
thanks Mick
Hi there lunar module 5
Hope all is well with you.!
As you know I have been a fan and really enjoying this latest project...
Glad youre enjoying it Dorothy - the next part coming soon
@@lunarmodule5 would there be any upcoming information on official protocol regarding wiping down or cleaning the hatch after coming in and out where there would be concern of moondust and granulation that May accumulate around the seals of the portal and make it impossible to create an unbreachable vacuum seal?
Neil Armstrong: "That's one small step for man, but a giant leap for mankind."
Peter Conrad: "Ops. That's soft! And queasy"
Pete Conrad is the first man that walked on the Moon
No, it's Neil Armstrong in Apollo 11. This is Apollo 12
I've really been enjoying these. When can we expect the next installment in the Apollo 12 series?
its Imminent MM......this weekend !!
"I hit it with a hammer" LOLOL!
So because the camera got fried does that mean there is no video footage of them on the moon? Other than the footage from the LM? That’s a shame.
it does - but wait for this wekend and I think an alternative way of viewing the EVA will,be forthcoming..
Were it up to me, the next lunar flight´s callsign would be called lunarmodule5.
The way they keep messing with it, that Lunar Equipment Conveyor sounds like it ought to be an LRC course. :P
IS THAT IT.???? They do two EVA's and you end the VIDS HERE?
If you are familier with my channel you will know what is happening about the rest of Apollo 12 - I might suggest you have a look around other videos, especially live streams I have been doing, for you answer
interestingly, during splashdown a 16mm camera broke off its mount and knocked Bean out.
Somehow he just did not get on with cameras.
So cool! Awesome!'
Thanks Norse
Great as always=keep it going!!!!!!!!!!!what's next-11?
Not saying! lol
14:55 ....The MESA T.V. was much improved over Apollo 11's.
Small one for neal
This is NOT THE FULL MISSION, because it does not conclude with the splashdown and recovery, of the Apollo - 12 astronauts.
Hi George - if you didnt know I am still putting Apollo 12 together - intention is to release the conclusion of the first EVA in the next few weeks and to do the rest of the flight by years end. See ruclips.net/video/x1z_mtrKyMU/видео.html for how its coming along - regards LM5
Color wheel? This camera used DLP technology?
Who knew it was so hard to go outside? :-D
12:43 first Spanish word on the moon? :)
water going after you stand up ?115*10*51 peeing?
Will the Apollo XII Mission have any further additions?
yes, its being produced now...see the latest stream video available on the channel for the update
I haven't seen anything new from you in months. Just wondering if everything's ok. Any plans for continuing the Apollo 12 mission?
copyright infringement... i'd like to see RUclips's justification. everything related to the moon missions (inluding the plans for the Saturn V) have been in the public domain since they were created. what a load.
@@lfrankow Exactly. It was part of NASA's founding charter that nothing would be in any way concealed or restricted, including by copyright. It was a deliberate contrast to the USSR. I remember a NASA manager in a documentary saying they could not believe it when they were told the Mercury launches would be on live tv, delays and all. RUclips needs to chill out and let space fans be.
Any new one's coming out sometime soon on this series?
Its imminent this weekend!!!!
You have not posted a new video in a long time. I was wondering if anything was wrong.
hi 57..thanks for asking - I am ok...I will get back to the series soon...the next one is a third done...other things have taken priority...Regards Lm5
Really?
not one word on how bright the sun was on the trip there or back windows are not gild tented ???????? mic drop look all there logs no one talks about it tell this point hummmmmmm
Hey, just wondering where you've been. Did you run into the problem with this Apollo 12 series? I haven't seen a new one from this set for over 4 months now. Anything wrong?
still aroind MM just not sure if or when I will get this finished...sorry LM5
@@lunarmodule5 Remember what James Webb told the Apollo 8 planners, go when you're ready, and don't go until you ARE ready. We'll wait, and it's not like we don't have plenty to watch.
why there are no videos of walking on the surface of the moon? Apollo 12
because the TV camera was damaged 20 or so minutes into the moonwalk. If you have watched this video....you would know that....
@@lunarmodule5 after 20 minute problem not solved?
No they never go it to work after it failed - hence no TV from the moon after that on this mission
NOOOOOOOIIIIIIICE
LM-5 - How are you feeling?
I am ok 57..why do u ask?
@@lunarmodule5 I hate it when someone asks me that. Then when I say what you did, they reply, oh nothing. So, are you still OK ?
@@Sootaroot yep am still ok lol
Just discovered that some copies of the TV show Conrad erecting the flag after the tube was burnt out: twitter.com/IanARegan/status/1224898879046529025
Hi Ian - I will have a look through my 12 TV coverage and see if I can see this too - very interesting - it would seem to suggest that the rest of the TV might be viewable if it was recorded this way? The TV camera was left on and later in EVA 1 Capcom asks Al to do some work on it again before they closeout the moonwalk. Regards LM5
@@lunarmodule5 The only problem is that Al stopped down the camera after he 'fixed' it with the hammer (I assume the only reason we can see anything in this short clip is that he briefly had the f-stop all the way open).
Reading the transcripts, they did open the f-stop again at 118:36:36, but I'm wondering if the hammer strike caused some permanent damage?
That idiot Mr Bean should have been careful not to point the camera towards the sun from the beginning.
