    Here are some things to help w/the reduction of carbon build up, though it won't alleviate it.
    1. When driving, allow the engine to get up to full operating temperature. The worst thing you can do is to do shorties around town and such, which don't allow for the engine to get up to full operating temperature. This allows for more carbon to build up in the cylinders. Take her out on the highway at least once a month and open her up, especially before an oil change.
    2. Use a good quality of gasoline w/built in fuel cleaners. What are called Tier 3 Fuels. With the cheaper fuels, you get what you pay for. I recommend Chevron w/its Techron fuel additive. During the hot summer months, especially on long trips and w/the vehicle loaded, use a Premium fuel.
    3. At least once a month, run a fuel cleaner, like Chevron Techron, in the fuel tank.
    4. I recommended using Full Synthetic oil (Motorcraft, Mobil One, Pennzoil, Amsoil), w/a good quality oil filter, (Motorcraft, NAPA Gold, Wix, etc.). Stay away from Frams.
    5. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule.

      This is a GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine. That means that there is NO fuel coming through the intake valves to clean them. The old "Italian tune-up" you suggest - (Take her out on the highway at least once a month and open her up) - does NOT work on Direct Injection engines. The only way to clean the intake valves is an expensive (hundreds of dollars) cleaning at your dealer.

    Thanks for the video.The real problem with Ford EcoBoost (or EcoBoom) engines is the terribly thin cylinder walls. I personally think that is the biggest design flaw. If you do own a 2.0 ecoboost or any turbo charged motor, you Must change the oil at no more then 7500 miles using full synthetic oil only. Maintenance is always key for success in anything mechanical especially turbo charged engines. If it's being run on hot days often a clean serviced coolant system is a must and the engine must be allowed to cool down after hard duty in hot weather. In colder climates you must warm up the turbos more so then non turbo motors. Drive these motors easy and not like track star nuts and do the maintenance often and early and they'll last a fairly long time ✌🏽🇺🇲

    Great video, quick question; do you know if the coolant issue effects the Jaguar-Land Rover Ecoboost 2.0l engines, specifically RR Evoque, Discovery Sport, or Jaguar XE? From my research, I believe these (even as late as 2017 model year) are on the Gen I design and the coolant issue appears to be with the 2.0t Gen II ecoboost, no?
    Also, do you know if the European version Gen I engine still suffers the same exhaust manifold cracking, as from what I understand the European engines have a slightly different exhaust design? Thanks!!

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  Год назад +3

      Hi Douglas, thank you for the positive feedback and comment. The models you mention do use the 1st gen engine. The 2nd gen was when Ford moved to the open-deck block which is the flaw of those 2L EcoBoost's. The first gen doesn't have any real block problems, so there aren't any coolant intrusion concerns. Of course, random fluky failures can and do happen but it's not common or likely by any means on the first generation engine.
      As for the manifold, Euro-spec EcoBoost's do use different cylinder heads and manifolds. Here in the US, the manifold is built into the heads whereas in Europe it's a standard exhaust manifold that bolts to the head. The design is very different so it's unlikely the Europe versions have the same issues.

I've been looking at getting a Mustang, either 2021 or 2019, both with ecoboost engines since the GT gas mileage would bankrupt me (plus, I'm retired and don't need a GT anymore). Hello, i was doing some research on the 2.0 while I am interested in a Bronco Sport with the 2.0. You mentioned the manifold cracking. Now I am reading the exhaust manifold integrated to the head. Does that mean the head needs to be replaced or is it the single pipe that goes from the head to the turbo.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  Год назад

      Hi Kevin, there are a few possible places for the manifold to crack. Ultimately, I wouldn't worry about this issue too much. It's mostly a problem caused by high exhaust gas temps (EGT) from towing heavier loads, especially in hilly/mountainous areas. If you're planning to use the Bronco for anything extreme then you may consider some upgrades to help keep EGT's lower.

    Just test drove a 2019 Ford Escape with the 2 liter Ecoboost today. It seemed to ride fine, but when I popped the hood, it looked like there was some oil on the hood latch mechanism, and a very little around the top of the rad area. I am wondering if this is from a bad head gasket. The gasket you are talking about letting coolant into the cylinders, can it also spray some oil towards the front of the engine? Or maybe the guy just sprayed some lubricant on the hood latch?

    I bought a used 2017 2.0 EcoBoost Escape last year. I love it, but the mileage is horrible for a 4-cylinder - roughly 19- 20 mpg combined local and highway. I drive very conservatively, use top tier gas, make smooth starts, anticipate my breaking (always getting a perfect score on the "How am I driving" dash display), and I never take advantage of the turbo boost this engine is capable of. My mechanic did some diagnostics as well as a fuel injection cleaning. No codes were amiss that would indicate a compromised oxygen sensor. I still do paper and pencil gas mileage calculation and it jibes with the dash display's reading. Could my fuel gauge in the gas tank be off? Is it possible my odometer is incorrectly calibrated? There are no tell-tale signs that you mentioned in your video, no smells, sputtering, smoke, etc. It runs great, but if I can't correct the mpg issue, I will sell it. Is poor mileage typical for this engine or did I get a lemon?

    A big pet peeve is at negative 40 winters, the shutters on the grill don’t seem to close until oil temp gets below really cold. It’s like the engineers didn’t properly program the shutters behaviour for that cold of weather. I love how you tried to play down the carboning up issues its a big deal. Ford has followed Toyota with dual injection on some engines, but they are still lagging behind adding it to the 2.0l engine. The main reason I baight a Toyota to replace my wifes 2015 Fusion. Coolant intrusion issues that can destroy the engine. It boggles my mind how slow Ford is in fixing known issues and design flaws. I have seen Toyota fix things within 6 months before. Take the Tundra Waste Gate issue they already identified the problem and fixed it. I might buy Ford again one day when they get serious about Quality and longivity again. Right now in 2023 I would not touch anything but a Toyota, Honda, or a Mazda product. If you have endless money supplies by all means buy Ford Escapes.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  Год назад

      Agreed the coolant intrusion is a serious problem. With respect to carbon buildup issues thought this really isn't a "problem" so to speak. It's an issue with just about any direct injection out there, big "problem" across all the Euro direct injected vehicles. But it really doesn't cause any problems other than a very gradual and minor performance decline over time and can be easily remedied with walnut blasting. But I get you with quality concerns, the early model 2.0's like your 2015 certainly weren't the greatest from a reliability standpoint. The first gen of the 2.0 was also built off of the Mazda L-series engine for what it's worth. The coolant intrusion was an issue from the open-deck cooling design and the block was straight out of Mazda's design book.

    • @JasPlun
      @JasPlun Год назад +1

      Ford added the coolant channel to the Mazda design that is all 100%Ford stupidity thinking they would make it better without thinking if we do this what problems couuld arise. Mazda's quality has sky-rocketed since getting away from Ford!

    i have a 2016 ford fusion 2.0l turbo. im loosing coolant somewhere. UV die no visible leaks. and waiting on an oil sample test from Blackstone. oil visibly looked fine.
    this is the 3rd engine that's been in the car and its misfiring randomly on acceleration to pass people. it doesn't happen every time but its the only time it happens.
    first 2 engines misfired and blew apart and cracked #3 piston head.
    the engine is junk. no wonder ford quit making cars. they run away instead of being a responsible company and fixing the issue.
    i suspect the revised engine still has the carbon build up problem, but at least it shouldn't have coolant intrusion.
