actually, people in the 17th century are THIS gross. People literally wash their dishes with water heavily contaminated with faeces and if I'm not mistaken the water at that time wasn't clear at all (it was brown). But they weren't cheapskates ofc as that time they simply didn't know about the importance and health implication of sanitation
