The biggest tragedy of this scene: she truly respected Maestra Oliviero. Had anyone else spoken to her the way she did, Lila would have completely rebuffed them, but her teacher's word truly cut to the core of her. Her feisty nature, her strength, all got whittled away by her dismissive, belittling attitude.

We're too blinded by the teacher's admired reaction to Lila's talent to see and recognize that she played a fundamental role in Lila's self-denial and deviation. Her despise for plebs and the Cerullos was justified, but she's the one who allowed it to fall back on Lila herself. The social determinism so well promoted by Fascist mentality and institutions not only kept her from striving for Lila's education as hard as she did for Elena's, but it also pushed her to do her best to separate them, so protecting Elena's chances from any possible deviation and taking away from Lila her only real connection with those same chances. By dedicating herself to Elena exclusively, she chose to follow the easiest path: punished Lila for her parents' narrow-mindedness (as Lila introduces little Rino to her, she doesn't even dignify him with a glance: "Just another Cerullo"). Teacher Oliviero was cultivated enough as to see and understand circumstances, but not enough as to keep herself from becoming a means for those circumstances to prevail ("Evidently you didn't teach me properly").

    • @extraco.6376

This is perfect. The separation of Lila and Lenú isn’t something I see people talk about a lot. The divide created by Oliviero helped plant a seed that continued to grow. And from that point on Lila and Lenú were separate, living two very different lives until something drew them back to each other. But because of the teacher’s mindset and actions, because of the difference in experiences they inevitably pull apart again.

This. And it's all perfectly embodied by the "Do you know what the plebs is?" Scene, which I'm not sure if they included in the show but it was definitely in the books

I think Maestro Oliviero really just hates the plebian mentality of the town and how comfortable they are in their circumstances. So she takes it out on Lila who could have easily been her best student.

She's basicallly an "old guard" teacher, with a forma mentis typical of the Fascist Period. She grew up with that mentality. In fact you can see how she treat Lila and how she has a big influence not only on the education of Lenù, but also on her frequentations (She tell her to not hang around with Pasquale, which is a communist from a communist family)

Lila and Lenu embody the alternatives available to an intelligent person in poverty: Lila can’t control her anger or the temptation to use her beauty for the thrill of short term power then lust. Lenu struggles in obscurity and doesn’t get the man she wants (because Lila steals him) but wins out in the long term.

@@kaysussex4991 that's such an interesting observation. I think outside of the show it really speaks to the larger theme of intelligence. Is it really that genius people are only those who have made academic strides or have there been millions of other intelligent people without the opportunities or means to better themselves like Lila?
Steven Jay Gould once he said; "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."

I don't believe this scene is in the second book. In the book, maestra Oliviera dies before Lila even has a child, and while there are situations where Maestra Oliviera shows her resentment, it's more along the lines of ignoring Lila and pretending she doesn't exist.

I took this scene as showing they have both changed...a little. At least, in what they show. The teacher, in coming over to Lila, showed some movement. She didn't ignore Lila as she did at her front door when Lila & Elena took a wedding invitation to her. She was curious about Lila's status, as she has shown by asking Elena for updates from time to time. She has not given up on Lila. As for Lila-her instinct was to push-back which she did by suggesting to the teacher that she's not special and nothing special should be expected of her. She's like everyone. That's a change for Lila too, as though she has given up in making something of her life. Though, I don't think I believe her. It was more important for Lila, or more instinctual for her, to push-back towards this woman who continues to hurt her. My Brilliant Friend is a story about contrast & comparisons, among other things. Look at the contrast between Elena & the teacher's undying support & Elena's progress (which Lila encourages) and the relationship between Lila & the teacher & Lila's lack of progress in getting out of the neighborhood. While I haven't read the books, something tells me the teach'er's influence can be turned into a positive in the long run for Lila. If she allows it to sink in.

walts1fan I agree with your points and hopefully she takes this encounter to prove the teacher wrong. Lila is lying to herself about being like everyone else, the same way her husband thinks the baby is his. She is lying to save herself from the harsh truth. She has always known she can do things better like when she cheats the scale at the grocery store. She can feel she is on another level compared to those around her. We should also consider what the teacher did and didn’t say. She could have encouraged Lila to continue reading and to try to understand but she told her not to read things she didn’t understand. I haven’t read the books either but really want to. I appreciate your point of view and also hope she lets this sink in

The maestra clearly sees herself in Lila, she is talking to her but in reality she's talking about herself. She too wanted big things for herself and seeing how Lila ended up in the same neighborhood as her, knowing that Lila too is smart and gifted made her bitter.
This is not a reasonable anger, because it's personal for her. Normally the teacher should be blaming the parents, government, society etc.. But Oliviera blames Lila because we tend to blame ourselves for our failures and not the circumstances. She's projecting.

@@grethi8110 Well Lilas circumstances still are very different than Enzos, being a woman in this ery and under those circumstances. The way she got presured into a marriage too early (feeling that this might be her "escape" of having to marry a ruthless mafioso like Marcello, maybe she really thought she "loved" her later husband as he was a nice man there to "save" her. We only see later how this was just an act he put up), and how she always got terribly abused by her family (her dad was really aggressive, anyone remember how he threw her out of the window as a kid? They also abused her psychologically). Later the betrayal and abuse of her husband. She loses her self- worth, even though she always acts so strong and feisty.
Later on it is her who helps Enzo learn at night (he basically admits he couldn't do it on his own and she keeps him awake and how great they can learn together), and she learns with him. But this is all in the books, idk how much of it comes through in the show.

The last two episodes were haunting. Gaia and Margherita's acting skills are spellbinding. And they have been brilliantly directed. They are so good- that they are performing scenes of experiences that they haven't yet lived. Gaia's range of emotions is truly remarkable. She has the chops of a veteran actress. Margherita's subtle underplaying of Lenu- is equally astonishing. I love the scenes when she can no longer contain her emotions- and she erupts in a passion of fierce determination. Lenu's face reveals nothing- especially when she wears her glasses. Lila's face reveals everything. I was wondering if the old teacher had died- because she had been sick in the past few episodes. This was another great scene- from one of the best series; ever. Can't get enough- and I'm sorry that the season is nearing it's end. Bravo!

I thought a lot about this scene and the role of the teacher in Lila's life - on the one hand she is convinced that Lila has not done enough, because she herself did everything possible to become a teacher, probably in a world much more cruel to the women of Lila's world. But the more interesting thing is that as if for Lila herself / the scene suggests it / the teacher remains the only person who manages to show a force equal to hers, as if she is Lila herself coming from an older time, the irreconcilable remains in her, this which will eventually push her out of the ordinary life she wants to live. The teacher remains forever the image of Lily, who does not bow to her strength, is not afraid of her categoricalness, continues to tell her - you can do much more, you are weaker than you show it, if you do not do so to justify your goal - to make your mind change the world.

@@freddyrodriguez6577 Agree. HBO doesn't promote a lot of their shows. I don't know how they choose what to promote, and what not to. Though, it seems as though they promote new shows coming, or the new season of an established show coming, well. But, once the new show or new season begins, the promotion for that series or for the next episode, is not existent, for most shows.

@@freddyrodriguez6577 Its sad this show didn't get any promotion. I would totally recomend it. You may think the story goes slowly, but its really good, the characters have many layers, and have a very intricate relationship, also the story is very interesting, as we see them and their friendship grow through time.

"You shouldn't read books you can't understand. They're bad for you". Horrible thing said by a teacher. Even if Lila is no longer her student.
I know there are way worse characters in the series, but maestra Oliviero is one of those I dislike the most. People like her in education damage the pupils. Not only don't they help students improving, they humiliate them and contribute to destroying any passion for learning they may have

I have conflicting feelings. Enzo still got his degree despite having to quit school full time and work for his family. But Lila just gave up altogether and was seduced by the sudden riches of her husband, the new status, money, clothes all the things she didn't have before. I think in this case, while Lila had fewer options than Lenu, she could have continued pursuing a degree if she had wanted to, even if as an adult. All that time she spent at home not working in the charcuterie, married to Alfonso. My personal philosophy is that when there's a will there's a way. But that's shaped by my personal experience. I didn't grow up in Italy in the 1950s. She had a child when she was still a girl, perhaps it truly was impossible.

I´d argue Lila was never seduced by riches.
Elena even mentiones Lila didn´t miss them when living in povery with Nino.
The marriage to Stefano resulted out of need and pressure.
Marcello was worming his was into her family and everyone was expecting her to take his offer sooner or later.
She then chose the other way out, convinced herself of Stefano´s good intentions, the difference in caracter from his father and of course wanted to secure her family´s circumstances.
Also Stefano was one of the only men of marriagable age Lila didn´t feel towards as a brother.
At the time and when rejecting Pasquale she mentioned seeing him, Enzo, Rino, Antonio or even Alfonso as brothers rather than potential suitors. The Solaras obviously weren´t an option and who remained was Stefano and by extension Nino.
Lila COULD have done that but she was always someone who wanted to make a difference on a local scale. Her tendencies, in contrast to Lenus, were to her community and neighbours.
Sure, she could have finished high school and uni but wouldn´t be able to contribute in any way during the time it would habe taken her.
She would sooner or later have to leave to pursue higher goals/ education and would always be "behind" Elena and/or compared to her.

One question, is this real Italian or a dialect? Cause in the book it always talks about how they talk in a dialect and I’m learning Italian but can’t understand anything so now I’m confused haha

Yes, Neapolitan dialogue is known for being almost incomprehensible when compared to proper Italian. To make the series more authentic, the director had to cast people only from Naples - specifically to encapsulate the accent.

Amazing serie. I love how it portrays how poor people and women had difficulties to have a life with education because not everybody could afford it. And in that time the mentality of educated women was not very good seen because they were mean to get married and have children and not do anything important in the world

Dislike for the anti-Joyce sentiment. I deliberately go out and read books that I don't understand, and then I push myself to understand, so that I can have a deeper understanding of language and of the world.

I think the issue here for the teacher was one of context. Lila jumps around a lot, she goes right to the hard stuff without having the base to understand it --- and that can be DANGEROUS. Lenu on the other hand works her way up, step by step and methodically. Lila is fire, Lenu is water ... Lila is the hare, Lenu the tortoise.
