I have done a year in bags and a year in beds, without a doubt I prefer bags!! It is so much easier and you always pull 100% of your harvest. For those that care about your backs, bags are the way LOL.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Jim, keep it up.

We did this last year with some organic fingerling potatoes that we’re almost going bad in the fridge. We got a really good harvest from just one grow bag considering they were only about for a little tiny potatoes in there! Did not realize about setting the bag on the ground. Thank you so much for that!

I do nearly the same, except I put about 4” on top then when they get about 10” tall I fill the bag with semi mulched leaves. Uses less dirt, the leaves break down.

I am using 10 gallon bags this year but the potatoes are not ready just yet but they are growing out of control. So much so that they are falling down a lot. They need watering every day and yes you need lots of compost but I find this way so much better then in the ground. I am actually investing in a lot more bags for next year too.

I did grow bags this year. I admit i was a bit disappointed. i was expecting potatoes to be in the whole bag from bottom to top. i assumed this was the whole reason behind "hilling up" potatoes. all of my potatoes were in the very bottom of bag. another possible issue was my foliage was very tall and lanky. i even started cutting it in half to produce shorter fuller top growth. what are the possible mistakes i made. im in Winston Salem, just a bit west of you.

I am in the opposite part of the country as you, in Aberdeen, Washington (PNW to be more precise & 20 miles inland of Ocean Shores).
I was going to plant in the ground, but I am getting ready to order some potato bags, because I just learned of them & I'd much rather do it that way due to " inground bugs etc. & my disability (it'll be easier to have them raised up!)
And, I am wondering first off, is it correct that potato plants need watering up until a certain point & then stop? (& during the watering process how often?)
And.... Is it also correct that they need lots of sun? (if so, how many hrs per days?)
And, is there a "one & done" fertilizer I can use? (I'll be using 10lb bags).
And, one last important question - I don't have access to the compost & bark stuff you used, I only have "Harden Soil Made With Compost" & "Moisture Control Potting Mix" & a big bag of "Perlite"
Can I use one of those & mix Perlite with one of them?
Yes, I am a brand new baby Gardener (don't know right from wrong) 😉😁

      @@JimPutnam Too late! LOL
I didn't mix a lot in my 20 gal bag. Just about 1/8th bag of sand and the rest growing medium )soil for raised bed gardens actually).
It has some sand but not a significant amount to make it dry out too quickly.
My bags will get the first 6-8 hours of morning sun then shade for a few hours then a couple more hours of sun then shade till dark.
I plan on using some kind of drip irrigation too. Probably an inverted 2L soda bottle and string.
That or get the wife to stand there with a water hose? Dunno...
I can always use inverted long neck wine bottles filled with water.
Leaves the surface dry to prevent weeds and yet auto waters when the soil needs it.
Just need the wife to drink MORE WINE!
