One of the greatest songs of all time. Michael McDonald sang his ass off on this song. The Doobie’s harmonies are fantastic. The bittersweet lyrics take you back…..
I love Michael McDonald. He went to the high school where I was a teacher. Though he had already left before I came, I knew that a superstar had been in those halls. So proud!
He's the king of soft rock. Took over lead singing and writing for the Doobie Brothers after the band leader had an accident. He has a magnificent beard.
What type of accident did Tommy Johnston have ? I never really heard of just exactly why he had to step away for a while to recover. Recover from what ??
The Doobie bros ceased to exist after Michael Mc Donald. Totally different band. imho. Same thing happened to Journey and Van halen. Different versions. I do love the song and Michael Mc Donald is good.
@@hbarajas9878 Tommy Johnston had a medical issue in just as they were about to go on tour, specifically a bleeding ulcer. Jeff Baxter, another band member knew Michael McDonald from when they were in Steely Dan together, and he recruited him to cover for Tommy. Tommy later made a full recovery. After which they had two lead singers, with McDonald also playing keyboards, until he departed to launch his solo career. He has since returned to Doobie Bros.
Very true. If you’ve been there, you understand! “What seems to be, is better than nothing.” But “nothing” is better than being continuously crapped on. Powerful song.
The Doobie Brothers!!! A lot of great songs. Their 1st 2 hits were "Listen to the music" and "Jesus is just alright with me" Studio versions. That was before the singer in What a fool believes joined the band and my favorite with him is "Takin' it To The Streets"
@@williamcabell142 I'm happy to let you believe that, but as a 55 year old dude, who has enjoyed the brothers since the begining, I find the time with Mike as just another iteration of what the entire band was capable of. I have enjoyed their music before, during and after Mike.
Crying (happy tears) cause these songs I'd never seen because we didn't have a tv growing up but heard this on the radio and on a stereo whenever we went to our Families places who had money. Beautiful harmonies. Love Doobie Brothers ✨💜💜🌺
Aretha Franklin did a version of this song too--aaaaand it was PRETTY MARVELOUS! As you might imagine. His voice is so beautiful, he really feels this song. A sad story, a human story.
Happy Easter Mo. It always makes my day seeing your lovely face grace my screen. btw, The Doobie Brothers are from my home town of San Jose California. Here in the heart of Silicon Valley. Have a great week, RNB
Michael McDonald has such a distinctive voice. He wasn't an original member of The Doobie Brothers. He took over lead vocals after Tom Johnston left the group.
I met Keith Knudsen a few times (Doobies drummer). Super cool dude, I rode his Harley ( a Road King) working at a Harley dealership in Northern California, he passed in 2005. RIP
Loved your reaction Mo! The Doobie Brothers have a great catalog of music. Songs like Taking it to the Streets, Long Train Running, I Keep Forgettin', Listen to the Music and many more. And the lead singer, Michael McDonald has a very distinctive voice and has done duets like "Yah Mo B There" with James Ingram and "On My Own" with Patti Labelle. You can't go wrong with the Doobie's and Michael McDonald. Take care Baby Girl! And I always enjoy your reactions!
FABULOUS VIDEO SIS!!!! unlike other creators your age hearing these masterpieces for the first time, you actually sit quietly and LISTEN TO THE ART. I truly appreciate you not stopping constantly to talk, and I enjoy watching you go on the journey into the music. I'm GenX so I grew up hearing this. How fun to watch you discover for the first time! New subbie right here 🥰
Morenikeji, You keep picking "true classics" and I love it! I grew up on this music and am glad to see the younger generations finding some space in their hearts and minds for it. It's the only way to keep the true classics alive. So, much respect to you young lady for being an open-minded music lover! GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC, NO MATTER WHAT ERA OR GENRE!
I agree. I just discovered Mo and her taste in music is great! I love her positive and honest reactions. So refreshing especially when you compare her to the other reactioners.
Love all the music of The Doobie Brothers , they have a lot of Beautiful songs ! I’m glad that you like the music too . Listen to the music is my Favorite song. Morenikeji if you had time listen this song , it’s so beautiful ! Thanks for your choice, and love from Holland! 👍🙋🏼♂️💐😘🇳🇱
You have only scratched the surface with Sir Michael and the Doobie's. Try their California concert ...1981...it's on RUclips. i doubt you'll be disappointed.
I just saw you on the group reaction and I just had to find and subscribe! Your heart was seen (even in the little box featuring you) and felt. Wishing you millions of subscribers! 😃 BTW, it was We are the World on Melodystic ReD channel.
Daaaaaaaang I SO miss rock like this when it was real and soulful and moving. Thank God I was old enough to love the Doobie’s and so many more like this. (I was 11 y/o in ‘79). Real voices and real musical instruments. To the current generation: THIS is how it’s done.
aww, just a wee lad ( just playing, I was born in 66 , so only a couple years lol). But I agree, I wish there were still bands like this ( and also RUSH, but thats another genre ).
Hi Mo, great to see you liking some Doobie Brothers. As others have mentioned i think you would also like Listen to the Music. China Grove is one of my favourites but much more rock. Keep smiling & Happy Easter beautiful!
Hi, Mo. Thanks for sharing your reaction to this group and the song. Yes, finding out that someone you love doesn't feel the same about you can be soul-destroying. But you persevere at it, even though there's no reciprocal love.. that's just what a fool believes. Happy Easter to you and your family. Stay healthy and safe 👍🏽 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ P.S. You may like to react to Patti Labelle & Michael McDonald's 'On My Own'. It's a beautiful song and I really think you'll like it.
Happy Easter my favourite baby girl! 💖🙏🏼💖 This is an interesting song, as the music is so smooth and yet the lyrics tell another story... Can't chat much today, as I'm working 🤦♂️ haha, but always great to see you - and loving your look! Take care and lots of love 😘😘
You're going to have a FUN time discovering all of the other collaborations Michael McDonald took part in. It's as if the entire music industry was smitten with his singing abilities. and there is no shortage to famous songs that he managed to take part in. Keep a look out for some nice live performances where bands bring him out on stage so he can help out a bit during their performance. See if you notice a difference between his live singing, and his recorded performances. Just wanted to mention this, now that you know what to listen for.
I’ve spent the last year learning to play piano playing the songs one does as they’re starting out. A couple of months ago I scraped everything else so I could learn to play this.
This song is giving me some deep subconscious nostalgia. I have no conscious memory of it but it feels familiar in a nostalgic way. I must have heard it a lot as a toddler or baby.
I love watching Jeff Baxter play guitar. He kicks back in his chair, because he finds it comfortable (no other excuse), and just jams! The reclining rock star. lol He's an amazing character. A killer guitarist... And a defense industry analyst who regularly testifies before congress on defense strategy. No shit.
A great song. The singer, Michael McDonald was new to the band around this time. And the fellow sitting is Skunk Baxter he retired high ranking US MILITARY.
Ah Morenikeji, you’ve really never heard that one before? And you came across it largely at random? Wow! Its not entirely at random though because you asked for similar to Player and the algorithm knows what you like now. Then again so do I. I’ve been watching your videos for months now and I feel like I know you like you’re my little sister. I knew you’d like that before I’d watched a second. I love that one too. One of my all time favourites. Yes it’s a song about a one sided romance. When I was at school and that song came out I was madly in love with a girl called Lisa. She knows who she is. That’s how things would go if I met her today. Such is life, although i look much better now than I did then so maybe it might be different. I doubt it though. Glad you liked it. Always loved that song.
You know you are a great and unique singer when 'everyone' does their own impression of you. I've actually heard a few good impressions over the years.
This song is straight awesome even after 40 years.. can't beat it

He is a soul boy.
The adding of the last sentence is hilarious ! By the way : yes he does !
Had forgotten how great this song is.
"What a Fool Believes, he sees. No wise man has the power to reason away "- So true!!! Massive line👍.

This is an amazing song from beginning to end ❤ when true talent existed
This is a song from my teen years-I was absolutely in love with Michael’s voice. ❤
Wonderful song. So full of emotion & incredible musicianship. Loved this back in the day & still love it.
Beautiful song
Mike is one of the greatest singers ever listening to this since mid 70s loved it then, still do. His voice gives me chills it's soooo good.
I was obsessed with this song in 1979. I was 27 and now I can't stop listening to this.
