I'm so excited to tell you what I have learned. Vine borers, we both hate them.The answer to our prayers!! Use self grip athletic tape. Wrap around from the bottom & up the stems. Try it !!!

I tried sweet potatoes and yellow yams for the first time last year. Some are still in huge pots outside here in the low AZ desert. Many that vined dried up with our high summer heat. I left some still in the pots including the one with vines still growing. Hopefully I will get a higher harvest although, I am happy I got a decent harvest so far! All came from potatoes gone bad from not being used. Some were slips growing from the potato sitting on my kitchen counter. Some from planting slips and some from just planting the whole sweet potato into the garden bed.

I have dealt with infestations of those tiny gnats. Now because I plant things while in my home, I either add boiling water to the mix of whatever I am using for planting, mix it up well,cover tightly with foil and wait until it is cool before using. Or since I have no complaints, I have baked the mix to kill whatever might be in the soil instead. Whatever suits my fancy at the time.
